September 19, 2006 Editor: Shelly Willingham
The University of Louis-ville adopted a ten-year business plan in 1998. Titled the “Challengefor Excellence”, the plan was tocomplete 11 University goals by theyear 2008. As a response to publicinitiatives, both public and state, the plan was instilled not only to trans-form the University into a top re-search center, but to unleash the po-tential of economic growth in allsectors of Louisville’s economy.President Dr. Ramsey statesthat 10 of the 11 goals have already been met. The final goal: designa-tion as a member of the NationalInstitutes of Health Cancer Center. The research programs and faculty positions that make up a cancer re-search center are already in place, according to Dr. Ramsey. “We wereready to file the application in Febru-ary, but we were advised by the Na-tional Cancer Institute to wait be-cause of funding.” If NIH and NCIlack funding to support a new center,The University of Louisville’s appli-cation could be denied. The goals to be completed by 2008 are as follows:

The Race for Louisville is ON!The Race for Louisville is ON!The Race for Louisville is ON!The Race for Louisville is ON!
For the past 20 years Louisville’s highest of-fice has been occupied by Democrat JerryAbramson. Named as one of the Top 20 Mayorsin America, Abramson has developed programsto expand the city park system, joined Louisvilleand Jefferson County into Louisville Metro, added additional police and firefighters to thestreets of Metro and brought jobs and expan-sion to the Kentuckiana region. But is this goodenough, or is the Mayor keeping Louisville fromits potential? This is the point Republican challenger KellyDownad brings to the debates. The two candi-dates used to be friends and strong supportersof each other in the Metro Council, but since thelast election, tensions have grown. Society Picnic
 By Tony Harper
Last Thursday, the Speed School Student Council heldits annual Society Picnic, an event where departmentalsocieties could talk to Speed students in order to gettheir names out and perhaps recruit a few new mem- bers. In return for talking to at least one society, stu-dents were offered free food, prepared by members of Student Council. This event's turnout was excellent; each departmentalsociety was in attendance, with around 300 studentscoming out to speak with the different organiza-tions. With the exception of a few times where the de-mand for food exceeded the amount that could be pre- pared, the event went off without a hitch. Additionally, each society remarked that they had gained new mem- bers, a definite plus for some societies whose numbershave had somewhat of a downturn lately.
American Society of Mechanical Engineers

The hysteria of Cardinal fanscame to an abrupt halt after Miamiscored a touchdown within the firstfive minutes of the game. Howcould Louisville allow Miami to justrun right down their own field? Most fans can agree they wereglad to see halftime, knowing bothteams were going to get an earfuland hopefully some strategies and plays to come back strong secondhalf. Job well done by the way tothe Marching Band and the LadyBirds – we all enjoyed your perform-ances!Tickets for the game were goingfrom $100 to $700 according to thenews stations and papers. The sec-ond half might have been worth $40,the first half maybe $5.Just because we won doesn’tmean we played like the team westarted the season as. Our two star  players are no longer playing – or atleast for the next few games. Brohmhurt himself and won’t be able to play for a couple of weeks, so hisreplacement is Hunter Cantwell, #14from Paducah. Bush made an ap- pearance at the game (on crutches)and was greeted by a warm ovation by the crowd.

Celebrating 11 for 11
The University is about to complete a huge ac-complishment; completing all 11 goals set beforethem with the “Challenge of Excellence”, a year aheadof schedule no less. This means that this accomplishment is just goingto pass unnoticed right? Think again!. The admini-stration has scheduled a number of event to com-memorate this event. The first of theses events happened this past Fri-day, with a celebration in the Oval. This event in-cluded free food and door prizes. These door prizesweren’t the regular t-shirt and mug door prizes. Win-ners received items such as iPods, tickets to games, restaurant gift cards.Along with the food and prizes, teams of faculty, staff, and students competed to complete a logo madeout of pizza. That’s right a logo made out of pizza. Each team was given a pre-made logo, cuttingutensils, and pizza. The goal was to fill the logo with pizza the fastest. The team of faculty came in first, atleast 15 minutes before any other team. The next major event scheduled is the State of theUniversity given by President Ramsey. This will take place October 11 in Comstock Concert Hall. Here,President Ramsey will announce the University’s newstrategic planning process.Along with these events, the University will holdnumerous Outreach Tours, receptions, and tailgates
