E-Expo showcases Speed School and Engineering
by Jared Hatfield, Editor The annual Engineering Expo,formerly E-Days, will be held onSaturday March 1, 2008 at the Uni-versity of Louisville's Speed Schoolof Engineering. Engineering Expo,referred to as E-Expo, is a major event hosted by the Speed SchoolStudent Council which attracts awide variety of people. The eventsof the day are varied and includehigh school competitions, a corpo-rate career fair, undergraduate andgraduate level competitions, a key-note address, lab tours, and an infor-mational session for potential Speedstudents.High school students are invitedto E-Expo to participate in competi-tions sponsored by student chaptersof professional engineering societiesat Speed School. These competi-tions challenge students to apply the principles of engineering, at a veryfundamental level, to complete ob- jectives and win awards provided bythe dean of Speed school. Highschoolers are also able to interactwith university faculty, staff, andstudents to enhance their under-standing of the engineering field.Graduate and undergraduate stu-dents also participate in judged com- petitions where they present research projects in a variety of fields. Thisyear competitions will be judged on presentation skills and technical un-derstanding in divisions based ondegree. These competitions helpshowcase the work of Speed Schoolstudents and the exhibits are avail-able for public viewing.Another major aspect of E-Expois the companies and corporationsthat come to recruit students for co-op positions and full time employ-ment. While not every company participates to hire students, E-Expo provides an excellent networkingopportunity for students to interactwith companies and learn moreabout opportunities in industry.Information sessions will be held inseveral different subject ar-eas. Again, these are open to the public and anyone can attend. Onesession will discuss Speed School ingeneral and the different opportuni-ties available at the University of Louisville. Many university labswill also be open for viewing, andindividuals will be available to an-swer questions and demonstrate the principles of the newest advances inthe engineering field.E-Expo happens across SpeedSchool with multiple overlappingevents, but everything stops for theKeynote address. The address thisyear will be delivered by Dr. BillHammack, The Engineer Guy. Dr.Hammack is a professor at the Uni-versity of Illinois and gives weeklyradio addresses on "Engineering andLife." The Keynote address will beheld in Bigelow Hall, Miller Infor-mation Technology Center and will begin promptly at 11:30 AM. Allother E-Expo activities will be sus- pended during the address.Other notable events at E-Expoinclude the arrival of an AH-64Apache helicopter at 1:00 PM. Thetakeoff of the Apache will signal theend of E-Expo at 4:00 PM. Addi-tionally, the Crime Buster PoliceCruiser will be on display behind theJB Speed building starting at 12:30PM.This year's E-Expo is going to bea very exciting event and the publicis welcome to enjoy the exhibits,listen to the keynote, and learn moreabout engineering in general.http://engineering-expo.com
