Scribd is a vast library of documents including hundreds of thousands of PDFs. Under the hood of all those PDFs is a remarkable file structure designed to capture the exact look of a document and preserve that look on any computer operating system and output that look on any monitor or printer—often in a smaller file size than the original document.

Owing to its stability, flexibility and ubiquity, over the last ten years PDF has become the format of choice for commercial printing workflows. Probably for the same reasons, PDF has also been adopted as an international ISO standard.
