My Grandma’s Childhood

By Eduardo (Lalo) Barrios

I interviewed my grandma because I thought the

interview would be interesting and it was. It all starts on
July 20th, 1958. There was a little girl trying to get a good
education. Her name is Graciela Soto Perez. She had
three brothers, two sisters, five aunts, and six uncles.
She really wanted to get an education. She was
thirteen years old and didn’t know how to read. She only
went to school for one year because back then they
thought that girls didn’t have to go to school. Her
favorite thing in school was learning. Her least favorite
thing was that she couldn’t stay there long.
Her favorite book was Archid E. Sabrina. Her favorite
candy was Jell-O chocolate and Ritz cookies. They cost
ten cents of pesos. Her favorite show now is “Caso
Cerado”. Her favorite hobbies now are to read the bible
and to take care of me.
What she mostly wants people to remember her is
that she loves them and that she is a good woman. I
learned a lot from her: that I have a better opportunity for
a good education and I can still have a good life.
