Country Music Hallof Honour & Museumpublic meeting
The City of Merritt has encountered aunique opportunity to obtain significantfederal and provincial funding to createthe Canadian Country Music Hall of Honour and Museum in downtownMerritt. The Museum will be a nationalmuseum. This project would solidify ourstatus as the Country Music Capital of Canada, and would be an importanttourist draw to our city. The Federal andProvincial Governments have pledged$900,000 towards this project;howeverit also requires an investment by the Cityof $300,000. This is a significant invest-ment and Council wishes to gauge thepublic's interest and support. You areinvited to a public meeting onNovember 12, 2009 at 7 pm at the CivicCentre to learn more about the projectand to cast a ballot indicating your sup-port or opposition. If you are unable to attend the meet-ing, but wish information, please contactany of your Council members. You mayalso indicate youropinion by telephon-ing City Hall at 250-378-4224.
Barriere’s replica ofStonehenge
In early October a town in theThompson Okanagan region receivednational news coverage for consideringa plan to build a replica of Stonehenge.Barriere lies on exactly the same 51degrees North latitude as Stonehenge,so some town leaders told the mediathat a replica would have the same ori-entation to the sun and stars. While thereare other replicas of Stonehenge, theBarriere version could follow the sol-stices and equinoxes the same as theoriginal. Town Council has set aside a100-square-metre area for the project. The idea is that a full-size replica of Stonehenge would boost tourism, help-ing to offset the economic hardshipfaced by the local sawmill. There isdebate over whether to build the replicaout of stone or pine-beetle- killed wood.
