The Houses

The twelve houses of a horoscope deal with all conceivable aspects of

life. The most important of all houses is the lagna or the first house.
The remaining houses are basically related to the first house only. The
planets in the horoscopic chart are subservient to the lagna, and their
original nature undergoes modifications depending upon the lagna.
(1) The Kendras (or Quadrants) : Houseuses 1, , ! and 1". These are
highly significant houses.
(#) The Panapharas (or $uccessant Houses) : Houses #, %, & and11.
(') The Apoklimas (or (adent Houses) : Houses ', ), * and 1#.
() The Trikonas (or Trines) : Houses 1, % and *. These are highly
auspicious and along with the +endras, determine the health, wealth,
status, dignity, rise and virtue of a native.
(%)The Upachaya : Houses ', ), 1" and 11. These houses indicate
struggle, competition and material achievement.
())The Trik Houses : Houses ), & and 1#. These are considered bad
houses. They indicate debt, disease, loss and misery.
(!) The Ayu-sthanas (or houses of longevity) : Houses & and '. They
indicate the length of life and, therefore, also the death.
(&) The Maraka-sthanas (or ,iller houses) : Houses # and !.
(*) The two halves of a horoscope :
(a) Houses 1 to ! indicate the invisible half and houses ! to 1
indicate the visible half of the horoscope.
(b)Houses 1" to indicate the eastern half and houses to 1"
indicate the western half of the horoscope.

influence on the houses and planets that they aspect. /ll planets fully
aspect the seventh house, or planets located therein, from their own
position. in addition, the outer planets (3ars, 6upiter and $aturn) have
been granted special aspects. Thus 3ars also fully aspects houses

moving in a reverse direction. The $un and the 3oon do not become
retrograde while 2ahu and +etu (almost) always move in a retrograde
direction. / retrograde planet produces une9pected results and is
generally adverse for health. / retrograde planet also e9erts influence
from its preceding house.

-ature of Planets
/nalysis of a horoscopic chartre1uires a thorough understanding of the nature of
planets. Ct is on the basis of a proper ,nowledge of the nature of planets that good and
bad results can be predicted with any accuracy. 4efore venturing into predictive aspect
of astrology, it is imperative on the part of a practitioner of astrology to spend some
time mastering the principles that govern the benevolence and malevolence of planets.
?lanets may be benefic or malefic by nature. Br they become benefic or malefic
depending uopn the nature of the rising sign in a horoscope. 4enefic and malefic
planets produce their results when their appropriate dashas operate. 7ashas thus help

us in the timing of events.
The nature of various planets is determined on the basis of standard astrological
principles mentioned by the classical writers.
The following account is primarily a reproduction of the same principles.

Malefics and *enefics by nature
?lanets may be malefic or benefic depending upon their inherent nature. Thus, 6upiter,
.enus, wa9ing 3oon and well;associated 3ercury are natural benefics. $imilarly, the
$un, 3ars, $aturn, 2ahu and +etu, waning 3oon and afflicted 3ercury are natural
malefics. The 3oon though a mild and benevolent planet, behaves as a malefic when
too close to the $un. 3ercury gets influenced too easilyD it thus behaves as a benefic
under benefic influence and as a malefic under malefic influence. 2ahu and +etu too
can behave as benefics especially when placed in the signs of 6upiter and 3ercury.

*en
efics and Malefics for different &a!nas
Parashara/s Principles
?lanets behave as benefics and malefics depending on the houses they own. The
ownership would naturally vary from one lagna to the other. Cn other words, for a give
lagna, certain planets will behave as a benefics while others will behave as malefics or
neutrals. This will be independant of their inherent nature. ?lanets thus are subservient
to the lagna. Bn the basis of the principles discussed hereunder, a natural benefic may
assume the role of a malefic while a natural malefic may assume a benefic role.
Principles - Part 0
(a) -atural benefics as lords of 1uadrants (houses 1,, ! and 1") shed their
beneficence.
(b) -atural malefics as lords of 1uadrants shed their malefics nature.
-ote :
(1) -atural benefics are the 3oon, 3ercury, 6upiter and .enusD natural malefics are the
$un, 3ars, $aturn, 2ahu and +etu.
(#) @ordship of 1uadrants has a neutralising influence on the nature of planets. The
natural benefics thus lose the capacity to give benefic results, while the natural
malefics lose their capacity to do harm.
(')Bnly the ownership of 1uadrants does not convert benefics into malefics, and vice
versa.
(c) @ords of trines (houses 1, % and *) give benefic results no matter whether by their

inherent nature they are benefics or malefics.
-ote : @ord of the lagna is both the lord of a 1uadrant and a trine. it is thus supposed
to give benefic results irrespective of it8s inherent nature.
(d) @ords of the third, the si9th and the eleventh houses are always malefic.
(e) @ords of the second, the eighth and the twelfth houses behave as neutrals. They
give results according to their location as well as association.
-ote : @ords of the #nd, &th and 1#th houses are impressionable neutrals.
Principles - Part 00
The twelve houses in a horoscope have been divided into four groups above : (a) the
1uadrantsD (b) the trinesD (c) the ', ), 11 groupD and (d) the #, &,1# group. Cn each
group the relative strength of the various house lords is described thus
(a) Bf the lords of the 1uadrants, the th lord is more powerful than the lagna lordD the
!th lord is more powerful than the th lordD and the 1"th lord is more powerful than the
!th lord.
(b) Bf the trine lords, the %th lord is more powerful than the lagna lord, while the *th
lord is more powerful than the %th lord.
(c) Bf the ', ), 11 group, the si9th lord is more powerful than the 'rd lord while the
11th lord is more so than the )th lord.
(d) Bf the #, &, 1# group, the 1#th lord is more powerful than the #nd, while the &th
lord is more so than the 1#th.
Principles - Part 000
The lord of the &th house, though considered a neutral, has a special propensity to do
evil. The eighth house represents obstructions, obstacles, failures, intrigues, ailments,
death and the li,e. The following points must be remembered while considering the &th
house.
(a) 0ighth house is the 1#th from *th (indicating loss of 4hagya)D hence its lord ie ever
malefic.
-ote :
(i) 1#th house from lagna indicates loss. 1#th house from any house indicates loss of
that house. $ince the *th house stands for 4hagya (luc,), virtues, pious deeds, religious
inclinations, father, etc., the 1#th from it (i.e., the &th) indicates the loss of all these.
@oss of fortune or luc, is considered the biggest loss.
(ii) =hen the &th lord is also lagna lord, the benefic nature of the lagna lordship
prevails, and the &th lord tends to behave as a benefic unless it is particularly afflicted
or ill placed.
(b) The &th lord is still more malefic when it also lords over the 'rd or the 11th house.
-ote :
(i) >or ?isces ascendant, .enus is the lord of the third and the &th houses and is bad.
(ii) >or .irgo ascendant, 3ars is the lord of the third and the eighth houses and,

therefore, adverse.
(iii) >or Taurus ascendant, 6upiter is the lord of the &th and the 11th houses, and is
adverse.
(iv) >or $corpio ascendant, 3ercury as the lord of the &th and the 11th houses is bad
(c) The eighth lord becomes a benefic when it also owns a trine.
-ote :
(i) 6upiter and 3ercury for @eo and /1uarius ascendants respectively own the %th and
&th houses, and behave as benefics.
(ii) >or 5emini ascendant, $aturn as the lord of the &th house as well as the *th house
(a trine) does not become an outright benefic, and, according to the 4havartha
2atna,ara, gives mi9ed results only.
(d) The evil effects of the &th house lordship do not apply to the $un or the 3oon.
-ote : The 3oon is the &th lord for $agttarius ascendant, and the $un for (apricorn
ascendant. /ccording to the sage ?arashara, the $un and the 3oon remain un;afflicted
by the &th house lordship. This, however, may not hold true in actual practice, at least
in medical astrology.
Principles - Part 0V
(a) =hen a planet owns both a 1uadrant and a trine, it becomes particularly useful and
is called a 2a:a;yoga;,ara,a (doer of great benefit). Ct gives additional benefit if it is
also located in a 1uadrant or a trine.
-ote :
(i) 3ars for (ancer and @eo ascendants, .enus for (apricorn and /1uarius ascendants,
and $aturn for Taurus and @ibra ascendants, become Eoga;,ara,as because of the
ownership of a trine and a 1uadrant.
(ii) $ome people doubt the efficacy of $aturn as a benefic for Taurus ascendant despite
its ownership of the *th and the 1"th houses (a trine and a 1uadrant respectively). This
is because the *th lord is considered a 4adha,a (an obstructing agent) for a fi9ed lagna
li,e Taurus. This , however, is not the view of ?arashara which is more authentic.
(b) Bnly the ownership of a 1uadrant does not convert a malefic into a benefic. The
malefic must also own a trine to completely shed its malevolence.
-ote : $aturn, as the lord of the 1"th and the 11th houses for /ries ascendant, as lord
of the 'rd and the th houses for $corpio ascendant, and as the lord of the )th and the
!th houses for @eo ascendant, remains a malefic despite owning a 1uadrant in each
case.
(c) The blemish of ,endra lordship (ownership of 1uadrants), as applicable to benefics,
increases progressively from the 3oon, to 3ercury, to 6upiter, to .enus.
(d) >ull 3oon, 3ercury, 6upiter and .enus, in this order, are progressively more
powerful as benefics.
(e) =aning 3oon, the $un, $aturn and 3ars, in this order, are progressively more
powerful as malefics.

=hen the lord of a 1uadrant is in some way related to the lord of a trine, a 2a:a Eoga
(or a highly benefic combination) is formed. 4enefic combinations in a horoscope
neutralise affliction and are good for remaining free from disease. 2elationship
between any two house lords can be in one of the following ways :
(a) 4y location in the same house (con:unction).
(b) 4y mutual aspect.
(c) 4y an e9change of houses (?arivartana Eoga).
(d) =hen one of them is placed in the other8s house and this latter aspects the former.
-ote 5 =hen the lords of 1uadrants and trines are related in one of the ways indicated
above, they still do not produce a 2a:a yoga if they also own the ?apasthanas (adverse
houses), i.e., houses ', ) and 11.
Principles - Part V0 1%ahu and Ketu4
(a) 2ahu and +etu give results according to the house where they are located, and
according to the planet (i.e., the lord of a house) whom they :oin.
(b)2ahu and +etu become Eoga, ara,as (productive of 2a:a Eoga) in the following
situations :
(i) =hen they are placed in a 1uadrant, and :oin a trine lordD or
(ii) =hen they are placed in a trine, and :oin a 1uadrant lord.
(c) 2ahu also behaves as $aturn and +etu also as 3ars.

Trik Houses and their &ords
Houses ), & and 1# are ,nown as Tri, houses. =hile these houses, their lords, as well
as the planets that associate with these houses and their lords are productive of
adverse results, they are particularly adverse in relation to health. The si9th house and
the si9th lord, among other things, indicate disease and accidents. The eighth house
and the eighth lord indicate chronic disease, incurable disease, or death. The twelfth
house and its lord indicate suffering and also hospitalisation. The dasha periods of the
planets associated with these houses and their lords must be carefully watched for
determining illness.
