When Charles Darwin published
The Descent of Man
in 1871, he challengedthe fundamental beliefs of most people byasserting that humans and apes hadevolved from a common ancestor. Manycritics of Darwin misunderstood histheory to mean that people had descendeddirectly from apes. This caricature of Charles Darwin as an ape appeared in the
