The Christmas GhostThe Christmas GhostAuthor's PrefaceAn Appeal to the Average ManIt is the especial aim of this book to make an appeal to theaverage man. To do this the better, I have made a study of thecensus of the United States and of the census of Canada, in orderto find out who and what the average man is.In point of residence, it seems only logical to suppose that theaverage man lives at the centre of population, in other words, inthe United States he lives at Honkville, Indiana, and in Canada atRed Hat, Saskatchewan. In the matter of height the average man is five feet, eight inches, decimal four one seven, and in avoirdupois weight he represents 139pounds, two ounces, and three pennyweights. Eight-tenths of hishead is covered with hair and his whiskers if spread over his facecould cover it to the extent of one-tenth of an inch. This oughtto be a promising sign to a reader.
