When it comes to learning, there is nothing more valuablethan hands-on experience. Run-ning a camera, writing scripts, producing television shows, andbalancing budgets – I was able todo all these things and muchmore by being a part of

The knowledge that I gainedfrom writing, producing andbeing in front of the camera whileworking with

was in-valuable in under-standing and ex-celling in my first job as a news-caster at the toprated NBC stationin Boise, ID.I now direct and manage allcommunications and publicevent and maintaining a bal-anced budget I practiced whilewith

Executive Board is getting into aspending mode with deals, wishlists and quotes. This year’s execstake on a huge and very ambitiousproject – the construction of a newmonitor bridge in the control roomof Studio A.Last week,
Cable 8
execs andadvisors had two meetings regard-ing this project.First, we met with Don Petersfrom Educational and Public Mediaat WSU. Don designed the controlroom and was the Project Managerwhen
KWSU
was building a newhigh definition facility in Studio B.We also met with Brad Fisher fromDiversified Systems, a system inte-gration company that specializes indesigning and building broadcastfacilities. At these initial meetings,we presented our vision of the fu-ture control room as well as dis-cussed other equipment needs of theorganization. In addition to the new monitorbridge,
Cable 8
will be looking intopurchasing a wireless microphonesystem for the studio, wireless IFBsystem and cameras for the fieldproductions, and automation for24/7 operation. Final Cut edit sta-tions and a server are also on ourwish list. All these projects promise hardwork and excitement. And eventhough it may take more time andmoney than expected to accomplishall of them, we rolled up oursleeves and got down to business.Meanwhile, we started seeingearly benefits of

KWSU

Cable 8
mightbe able to use the analog-to-digitalconverter and some other pieces of equipment from
KWSU
in the newcontrol room.On a side note, I am going to LosAngeles in November. I will beattending a five-day faculty seminarfull of presentations and interac-tions with studios, production com-panies, networks and their produc-tion and programming people.
