What Is Leadership?
Leaders are recognized in sports, schools and businesses every day. Not all of these leaders are managers.
Some are members of management, but others are employees who lead through example for
coworkers. It does not take a specific title to be a leader. Instead, there are skills leaders have that make
others want to perform at a high level when either working with them or for them. Leaders improve the
performance of everyone around them.

Significance

Leadership of a team can be the difference between success and failure. Leadership is the process of
determining goals for the team and finding a way for the team to meet those goals. Leadership involves
finding ways to motivate team members or employees to reach their goals. Learning how to motivate for
leader is not easy, as each employee or person on his team may have to be motivated in a different way.
Finding out how to get each team member or employee to perform at her highest level is the job of a leader.

Types

Leadership can be passive or aggressive. Showing good leadership involves reading people you are leading
and finding what works with them. An "in-your-face" approach might get high performance from some
members of the team, but it also can result in negative feedback from others. A laid-back leadership style
can empower employees who work for you, but it can also result in an atmosphere in which the team feels
unmotivated. The wrong type of leadership for a team or employee can be more damaging than no
leadership at all.
Effects

Solid leadership can help explain difficult tasks to an employee. Leadership should involve gaining
confidence of your employees and teammates. This can be done by demonstrating your level of knowledge.
This avoids having to deal with feedback from employees stating that "you just don't know what this job is
like." By showing you understand the challenges and offering solutions to solve them from your own
experience in the job, you can gain a level of respect from your employees. If your employees respect you,
they will be more likely to follow your directions.

Misconceptions

The old philosophy "leaders are born, not made" is incorrect. Leadership skills can be learned. It takes a
combination of studying different leadership philosophies and practicing them. Leaders learn skills as they
progress through their career. Take notes of at least one positive trait you admire in each boss or supervisor
you have during your career. Write down these attributes that you admire, and practice them even if your
job is not a supervisory role. Supervisors are not the only ones who demonstrate leadership. Employees can
show leadership in how they do their job every day and interact with their coworkers.

Identification

Learning successful skills as a leader is possible from books. One of the books that is very popular among
managers is the "ABC's of Leadership: 26 Characteristics of More Effective Leadership," by David M.
Hall. This book gives skills for new managers and experienced managers as well for leading their teams.
Learning is also possible from courses, and the American Management Association has some very good
leadership classes for employees and managers. The managerial classes range from beginning management
classes to classes for managers with years of experience wanting to fine-tune their skills.

How to Be a Leader
If you would like to take on more of a leadership role in your job or in life in general, it is a straight-
forward process that can be accomplished.

Step 1

The way to be a leader or take a leadership role can be stated in one sentence: Take Action!

Step 2

Instead of waiting around for someone else to take action and then following them, YOU take the action.
But you must first have a plan. It will not benefit you or anyone else to blindly move forward and take
haphazard actions.

Step 3

Here is an example of a leader versus a follower: If you are with a group and it is nearly time for dinner, the
leader will speak up and suggest a restaurant or a plan for dinner. The followers will likely go along with
the first suggestion. The followers may offer some other suggestions but often the leader's first suggestion
is used.
Step 4

A good leader takes into account the needs, feelings and desires of the group. So you want to be assertive
and state your plan or idea, but not at the expense of damaging relationships with the group around you.

Step 5

Always have a plan for what you want to do next, and then you won't be swayed or just drifting along with
the current of others. To be a leader you must have a plan and then take action on that plan.

Tips & Warnings

• Take others' feelings into consideration

• Avoid being "bossy"
• Make suggestions, not orders

About Leadership Principles in the Bible

The Bible is filled with multiple references to leadership and what it takes to be a good leader. The Bible
talks about the effects of good leadership as well as the results of poor leadership. Leaders are
responsible for how well they do their jobs and are accountable to God for leading their people astray.

History

Leadership principles are mentioned throughout the Bible. Leaders were needed from the very beginning,
when Moses led God's people out of Egypt through the desert for 40 years and then to the Promised Land.
The responsibility of leadership was too great for Moses to handle himself, so he chose leaders to whom he
could delegate the lesser tasks (Exodus 18:13-27). See Resources below for more information.

Features

The Bible defines many good qualities for leaders. In Exodus 18, Moses' father-in-law tells Moses to
"select capable men from all the people--men who fear God, trustworthy men who hate dishonest gain" for
leadership positions (Exodus 18:21). Moses chose "wise and respected men" to serve as leaders
(Deuteronomy 1:15). Being "very capable" is very important for being a leader (1 Chronicles 26:6). Good
leaders also "judge fairly" and "do not show partiality in judging" (Deuteronomy 1:16-17).

Significance

Those in leadership positions bear a heavy burden. They are to serve as examples to those who they are
leading by living in faith and by modeling a way of life that they want the people to exhibit (Hebrews
13:7). Leaders are often privy to information that the masses do not know, so leaders must determine what
to share, what not to share, and how best to direct others who do not have access to the whole picture
(Galatians 2:2).
Warning

Leaders have the power to lead people in the wrong direction (1 Kings 16:2), and God holds those in
leadership positions responsible when they lead His people the wrong way. (Isaiah 3:14) The Bible is filled
with warnings to leaders who lead God's people astray (Leviticus 4:22). God promises to punish leaders for
doing a bad job in leading God's people (Jeremiah 25:34), particularly when they lead God's people into a
sinful lifestyle (Zechariah 10:3).

Considerations

God calls certain people into leadership positions (1 Samuel 9:16). In fact, leadership is one of the many
roles that is necessary for the Body of Christ to function well (Romans 12:4-8). God expects His people to
obey and submit to the authority of the leaders that God has put into place (Hebrews 13:17). God wants
leadership to be joy, not a burden (Hebrews 13:17). The best leaders lead willingly and give "freely and
wholeheartedly to the Lord," which results in rejoicing by the people who are being led (1 Chronicles
29:9).

How to Be an Effective Leader

Are you a leader? What skills and talents are required to be an effective leader?

Often individuals are thrust into a situation which requires change, forward progress, accountability, and
tangible outcomes, but they find themselves swimming in paralysis because they can't seem to make
necessary changes.

Effective leadership skills are necessary to propel an agency, company, or group of people toward a
common goal. It is not easy, but with a handful of specific tools, it can be done!

"A great leader doesn't look for followers, they look for other leaders". This is a quote from an unknown
author which holds a vast amount of wisdom and insight. Why would a great leader look for other leaders
in order to accomplish a goal? Well, you would think that answer would be a no-brainer, but often we see
leaders hire individual who need regular prompting, a lot of oversight, and are great "yes ma'am and yes
sir" people.

In some respects, this type of personality is nice because it offers the leader a sense of loyalty, however, it
is an unproductive relationship and one that is less than effective if forward progress is the goal.

So what are the principles of a great leader? Do you have them?

Step 1
Vision: The leader must have the ability to see how each area/department can work together for the
interests of the company. Departments and staff should not work in a vacuum and they, whether they are
different or not, should not work completely independent of one another. If departments work for the same
company, what affects one will affect another-all of which will affect the company. An effective leader will
see the vision of the company and be able to bring the departments together in a way that create functioning
systems all geared toward the ultimate goal of the organization.

Step 2

Commitment: The leader cannot be faint of heart. If systemic change is necessary, it will likely be chaotic
for a while and staff may be somewhat resistant to the change (particularly if it is different than what they
are familiar with). Once a vision and ultimate goal is established, the leader must be willing to accept chaos
for a while and trust that the outcome can be accomplished on the heels of the upheaval. It is during this
difficult time that leaders typically give in and change the course of the ship because they lost their
commitment in the sea of natural chaos. Hang in there and let staff know that chaos is only a temporary
state until things get ironed out. Just be aware that issues will only be ironed out if the leader is committed
to the process and continues to propel the staff/organization in the direction that they have established.

Step 3

Transparency: The leader must be transparent with staff in all dealings. It is critical that the staff know
what the vision of the agency/company is, and it is also critical for the staff to know why the company is
headed in a particular direction. If the answer is negative (i.e. compliance issues, funding/revenue issues)
this information is important for them to know. If staff understand the issues of the company it will be
easier for them to help keep the momentum going in the right direction. If this critical information is
withheld from them, they might want to try to help, but they will be blind in their efforts to assist. It is also
of utmost importance that the leader communicate progress with staff on a regular basis. Reaching critical
milestones is an enormous reinforcement to all involved and will serve as natural positive and healthy
momentum in reaching the ultimate goal toward the vision of the company. Finally, with regards to
transparency, the leader must be willing to recognize staff for their ideas and contributions along the way.
This "public" recognition will empower staff and provide credit where credit is due. When staff feel
empowered and a part of the process of change, they will likely find themselves invested in the new
direction and ultimately become highly instrumental in helping the company reach its intended targets.
Doing this requires the leader to have sufficient self-confidence. Many leaders are threatened by their
subordinates, and will stifle their talents as a result.

Step 4
Consistency: Leaders must ensure that they are consistent with staff and that they manage situations
according to policy. Staff are aware of inconsistencies and they don't appreciate them especially when they
are on the "losing end" of one. Make sure policies are well thought out and applied across the board. If staff
see that policies are applied and enforced fairly and consistently, they will respect the boundaries set forth
through the policy and whatever issue that prompted the policy in the first place will become less and less
problematic.

Step 5

Insight: The leader must have a certain level of insight and do their best to align company needs with the
talents and skills of the staff. When people are engaged in areas that they possess talents, and are supported
and encouraged to use those talents, the company can and will see tremendous progress. If the company
insists on keeping someone in a position (because they have always done that) but the position really does
not tap into that persons true skills/talents, then it can create a no-win situation for everyone, including the
company. Avoid this trap, use insight and realign duties if possible.

How to Be an Effective Leader Among Leaders

Leadership can be hard sometimes. Quite often it takes a greater toll on you when you are tasked to lead
leaders. Great leaders are not born they are made. To lead effectively follow these helpful tips.

Step 1

Be Yourself.
First and foremost you can not emulate or be someone you are not. Your style is your style and your
personality is your personality so you must be who you are first and foremost.

Step 2

Put The Mission First.

Whatever the mission is, whatever the goal is make it plain for both you and the leaders who are following
you to understand that goal. Lay out the objectives. Get buy in from your group that you are leading and
make the goals or the mission your priority and everyone should understand this.

Step 3

Lead Where You Want The Group To Go.

You can not lead where you will not go. Your commitment to achieving the goals of the group and
accomplishing the mission only happens if you take the lead and go where you want the team to go. You
have to not just be willing but you must do what you expect the team to do.

Step 4

Actively Listen While Maintaining Control.

Solicit the opinion of the group. Tailor your questions in a way to get participation yet maintain the control
of the group. When you are leading "leaders" many of them want to be in control. You have to maintain
your control while listening to their opinions. Implement those opinions that will help achieve your goals.

Step 5

Delegate Responsibility, Accountability and Authority.

Leaders like responsibility and authority. Many lack accountability. So when you delegate responsibility
and authority do it before the group and make leaders accountable. This helps get buy in and shared
responsibility. Also you will know the 20% who are willing to actually work.

Step 6

Motivate and Inspire Your Team.

In sports you hear quite often that the coaches or managers should not have to motivate professional
players. That is true in theory but it is not reality. Everyone needs to stay motivated in doing there jobs or
following through with their commitment. Money is not the only factor to motivate people. Like a coach
you must keep your team of leaders motivated to accomplish the mission.
Though you are leading leaders this can sometimes be harder than leading followers. You must turn Indian
chiefs into Indians to accomplish your goals and mission. To do so do not coddle them but you must keep
them motivated and excited about the mission.

Effective Communication for Teacher Leaders

Leaders rely on communication as a foundation for all other leadership tools and resources they possess. By
cultivating your communication skills, you can effectively become a leader in the classroom and among
your peers. Effective communication allows a teacher leader to more effectively teach students, deal with
co-workers and speak with parents.

Communication with Students

Students learn most effectively when they are engaged. Teachers are the authority figure in the classroom,
but they must gain the interest of students by not speaking down to them. By making a student, regardless
of age, feel as if his opinion is important, you will make him want to contribute, grow and improve. When
you, as a teacher, can motivate a student to want to be prepared for class because it is stimulating and fun,
you will have a higher student success rate.

Communication with Parents

Teachers who communicate effectively with parents are able to enlist a very powerful group to the cause of
improving the learning environment for students. When parents understand that you are working with the
students' best interest at heart, they will go above and beyond what is expected to provide any and every
resource they can. This may lead them to get more involved in the PTA or booster club to stay on top of
their students' progress. Being honest, but not critical, is important when speaking with parents.

Communication with Peers and Administators

Trust is an essential part of working with peers and administrators in a school system. Your ability to be
reliable and to keep your word allows peers and administrators to comfortably approach you with
comments, concerns and suggestions, as well as praise. Schools are constantly facing budget crises, but
maintaining open dialogues that keep frustrations out is important. What is important is discussion that
moves ideas and improvements forward.

behavior over some members or employees that deviate, digress, or lose interest in whatever the
goal is. Successful leaders have the ability to keep the group focused and motivated while keeping
themselves motivated.

How to Live - The Legacy of Leaders

The ability to inspire & motivate others to excellence ranks topmost among the 15 specific competencies
effective leaders share, according to leading institutions like Harvard & Stanford.

In the past, it was believed that inspiring others was a skill you need to be born with to possess but new
research has determined that it is a skill anyone can & should learn.

Leader attributes such as leading by example, being a change catalyst, building connection - can all be
learned & acquired.

Step 1

IDENTIFY YOUR KEY STRENGTHS - in your own personality & in your leadership approach

keep it honest & real - this is neither the time to crow about nor downplay your abilities - create an itemized
fact sheet & strictly stick to the unadorned facts

Step 2

IDENTIFY YOUR AVENUES OF GROWTH - what areas can you improve on?

key to this process of self-inquiry is gratitude & compassion - judgement, upset or regret only add to lack
of clarity - your job is to, once again, create an itemized fact sheet

Step 3

CONNECT THE DOTS - make connection by building relationship

passion is not generated externally, it exists within or not - if you live in a ME-centered Universe, where
everything & anything revolves around your wants & needs, you have boxed yourself into a very small
world indeed - transform your life by literally getting out of your own way!

Tips & Warnings

• WRITE IT DOWN - take a notebook with you at all times & systematically list what you do have
today that you are grateful for
• BE SELFLESS NOT SELFISH - find something bigger & better, something that serves the greater
good of many more than just your selfish desires
• BE CLEAR ABOUT WHAT YOU WANT - this will lead you from a life of frantic doing to a
person of calm being
• Form A Support Group - a group of 3 or 5 would be ideal
• Meditate Daily - find some time each day to quiet your mind & put an end to its eternal mental
chatter

How to Develop Leadership

Leadership is the ability to inspire and direct people successfully in various activities. Successful
management of major corporations and large non-profits often depends on great leadership. We know
leaders when we encounter them. But what is leadership? And how does one become a leader? Review the
steps below required to develop leadership qualities and to be successful in the management of other
people.

Step 1

Learn What Leadership Is. There are a number of competing theories of leadership. But leadership traits
seem to be centered around drive, character, intelligence and self-confidence. Of these, character (honesty,
integrity, moral virtue) is the most critical. You can actually work on and improve all four critical traits,
despite the belief of many that intelligence is a genetic trait. Young children especially can be shaped by
learning and adult example.

Step 2

Cultivate Intellectual Qualities That Leadership Requires. Children especially need intellectual
stimulation (not pressure) from the time they are toddlers to develop the intellectual curiosity and keen
intelligence that leaders need to be successful. The core skills that make up intelligence and intellectual
curiosity include verbal abilities, math literacy (“numeracy”), a love of reading and learning, and emotional
intelligence. As parents, teachers, coaches and mentors we need to learn how to motivate the behaviors that
produce these qualities and be positive role models for others.

Step 3

Cultivate the Motivation to Achieve. Children and adults need praise for things done well and
constructive criticism for tasks done poorly. They both need to learn how to behave well and work toward
excellence whether in a group or alone. Patient coaching is required over a long period of time until people,
especially children, internalize standards of excellence and productive behavior that are the foundation of
leadership. We need to teach children (and many adults) how to do tasks well and how to cooperate with
others. Over time, achievement will be less dependent on external rewards and should become internally
motivated.

Step 4

Develop Character. We need to help others, particularly children, develop good character, not only
because it will make them happy, but because it is the most powerful characteristic of successful
leadership. A leader is only credible to the extent that he or she is honest, objective, and trustworthy. Help
others develop character by teaching and modeling what the ancient Greeks called the moral virtues, which
are excellences of human character. Teach others about behavior that is just, temperate, courageous, and
prudent. These qualities are displayed by great leaders. Who wants to follow someone who is unjust,
intemperate, cowardly or rash, or imprudent?

Step 5

Develop Self-Confidence. Help develop self-confidence in others by encouraging them to undertake tasks
and jobs for which they are well prepared and likely to be successful. Leadership and self-confidence are
based on many experiences of success in managing projects or leading others well. Help others to succeed
in these ways to develop their self-confidence.

How to Improve Your Leadership Skills

10 ways for you to improve your leadership skills and enhance our communication skills to increase your
ability to be an effective leader.

Step 1

Have you ever heard someone say, “Actually, I have to admit that I think I have bad leadership skills. My
co-workers all hate me and I’m incapable of doing my job”.

The answer is no, of course. No one says this either because they don’t believe they have poor leadership
skills, or because they don’t want to appear incompetent. Unfortunately research tells us that from the
employees’ perspective, there are many managers out there who have poor leadership skills and
communication skills.

What should we take out of this dichotomy? Perhaps at the least, we could all admit to ourselves that there
is room to improve our leadership skills and enhance our communication skills to increase our ability to be
an effective leader. After all, it’s not the sort of skill that is easy to get 100% right all of the time. It might
just be that we don’t specifically know what improvements to our leadership skills we need to make, so
here’s 10 ways to start:

Step 2

Get a reality check

Finding out what others think of our leadership skills and our communication skills can be real eye-opener,
and is often the most powerful driver for change. Using a 360 survey where you receive feedback from
your staff, peers and manager, and family gives you some concrete information on a sometimes intangible
subject. Use an existing tool (and there are some highly regarded ones out there) or else simply let your
staff know that you are seeking feedback from them in order to improve your leadership skills.

A word of caution though, your staff may not feel safe in giving feedback if they believe you are going to
use it against them, or become defensive about what they say. It’s up to you to create a safe environment so
they feel comfortable in being open and honest with you.

Step 3
Don’t use the power of your position to get things done

If people are questioning why certain things are done, or the logic of decisions, never pull rank in response.
A critical component of effective leadership skills is getting the buy-in from your team and colleagues. You
don’t get buy-in by telling them that the decision is the right one because you are the boss and you made it
so your communication skills are extremely important. Your team may not always agree with what is being
done, but they are more likely to respect you if you take the time to explain your rationale.

Step 4

Don’t think of employees as things that need to be controlled or managed

Instead, give them the latitude to take actions and make decisions. Trust is a vital component of leadership
skills. If you can’t trust people to do their jobs well, then you either have the wrong people in the jobs, or
you have the right people but you haven’t trained them sufficiently. Let them do what they are there to do,
without leaning over their shoulders all the time, or demanding to know how they spend each minute of
their time.

Step 5

Listen, listen, listen

If there are unhappy or disgruntled people in your business, you can guarantee that at some stage they’ve
tried to tell you what the problem is. It’s likely you weren’t listening (or didn’t want to listen), or perhaps
your initial reaction made the person think twice about bringing the problem to you. Truly listening is one
of the greatest leadership skills to develop, regardless of your role. Good listeners are genuinely interested,
convey empathy, and want to find out what’s behind the conversation. Great leaders have great
communication skills –without exception.

Step 6

Stop providing solutions

Managers often achieve their positions after being technical specialists, and so will have an opinion or view
on how to "fix" situations or problems. They believe that it's faster to tell someone what to do, or do it
themselves, than give their employees an opportunity to figure it out. By always providing the answers,
managers take away opportunity for their employees to learn and come up with alternative (and potentially
better) ways of doing things.

Step 7

Always be constructive – always

Language and communication skills set great leaders apart from mediocre ones. Don't patronise or be
critical of others - take complete responsibility for how you are heard. If you catch yourself about to make
negative remarks, take a breath and rephrase your words to get your message across without the emotional
attachment. One of the Great leaderships skills is to always find a way to say things calmly and
constructively.
Step 8

Judge your success by the success of your team

The true success of a leader can be measured by the success of the people that work for them. As a manager
of others, your prime responsibility is to ensure the success and development of your team. If they are
successful, you will automatically be successful. Focus on building their skills and removing obstacles in
their way. If you can achieve this, you will see the results in the productivity, motivation and satisfaction of
your employees. This in turn filters through to bottom-line results.

Step 9

Don’t do things just because they will “look good”.

Nothing is more transparent than managers who make decisions and behave in ways simply to look good to
their superiors. If you want to improve your leadership skills, one of the qualities you need is integrity. The
integrity to make decisions because they are right, and the integrity to stand up when you truly believe
something is not in the best interests of the business. Whether or not it is in your personal best interests is
much less of a consideration.

Step 10

Include humour in your diet

Nobody likes to work in an environment that is devoid of any fun. People are more productive when they
are enjoying themselves. Creating a workplace where fun is permitted and encouraged can make a
significant difference, and it’s even more effective when the boss participates. It increases team spirit, and
encourages people to see you as a person, not simply as the boss.

Step 11

Let people get to know the real you

Being open about yourself helps to break down the barriers that hierarchy puts in place. When your
employees know the person behind the façade, that’s when you start to build the foundations of good
leadership - trust and respect.

How to Improve Your Leadership Abilities

Your leadership skills are important in the workplace and other situations. It can take years to become a
great leader, but there are ways to improve your abilities. This article will explain how to improve your
leadership abilities.

Improving Your Leadership Abilities

Step 1. Remain honest when speaking with employees. There will be a higher level of respect for you if
you do not try to lie and deceive your employees.
Step 2. Give unbiased feedback. Keep your personal feelings aside when it comes to feedback and
responses in the workplace.

Step 3. Be open to constructive criticism. If you can dish it out, you should be able to take it as well.
Constructive criticism is a great way to improve yourself.

Step 4. Propose new ideas. If your workplace remains the same for too long, it will be outdated and behind
its competitors. Always think of new ways to improve the work environment .

Step 5. Take responsibility when something happens.

Step 6. Recognize employee accomplishments. Many employees don't get credit for anything that they do.
Be the leader that recognizes and encourages achievements.

Step 7. Be clear when giving directions and instructions. Don't leave room for interpretation. If possible,
have two forms of instruction--such as written and verbal--so that everyone can understand.

Step 8. Monitor and coach employees when needed. Simply share your knowledge when you notice an
employee is in need and offer help to everyone.

Step 9. Stay calm during a crises. Employees normally follow their superiors' reactions. If you're openly
panicking about a situation, your employees will do the same.

Step 10. Practice ethical reasoning when making decisions of all kinds. Ethics are becoming a major issue
in the workplace.

Step 11. Be active in conflict management. When problems arise in the workplace, try to nip it in the bud
as soon as possible.

How to Develop Good Leadership Skills

Developing good leadership skills is not something that happens overnight. As a matter of fact, most
effective leaders will tell you that learning how to be a good leader is an ongoing process, and that you will
never quite “arrive”, because there’s always more you can learn and more you can do to improve your
leadership skills. As the old saying goes, “The biggest room in the world is the room for improvement.”
This article will provide some practical and helpful tips to assist you in developing good leadership skills.

Step 1

In order to effectively lead others, you must first learn how to lead yourself. The most difficult challenge of
life is that of self-mastery. Can you discipline yourself in your daily life to do what it takes to lead
yourself? In other words, can you do what it takes to properly maintain your personal life (physically,
financially, socially, etc.), regardless of whether or not you feel like doing it? This is the first step in
becoming a more effective leader. For example, if you constantly show up late for work, how can you
expect the people you lead to show up on time? Your example speaks volumes, many times without you
even opening your mouth.
Step 2

Enthusiasm for what you’re doing is a key element to having others “catch the vision”. When your
followers and/or subordinates see that you’re excited and fired up about accomplishing a given goal or task,
that enthusiasm many times will be contagious. A lifeless, deadpan leader will produce lifeless, deadpan
followers.

Step 3

Can you commit to the project or goal with your whole heart? Half-heartedness is something that your
followers and/or subordinates can detect quite easily. The amount of importance that you give to the task(s)
at hand will many times determine how important others perceive it to be. Throw yourself completely into
your work; you’ll be amazed at how this can inspire others to do the same.

Step 4

Set clear, concise goals. It’s very hard to hit a target that has not been defined. Your people need to know
that you know where you’re going, and that you know how to lead them there.

Step 5

Make sure that everyone on your team has a full understanding of their role in accomplishing the goal. Get
others involved as often as you can. It has been said that “involvement creates commitment”. Delegate
tasks to others and then trust them to take those tasks and run with them. People desire to be trusted and
believed in, and most of the time they will live up to your expectations of them, given the opportunity to do
so. If you “hoard” all the tasks for yourself, it will cause your team members to languish and feel
unimportant.

Step 6

Actions definitely speak louder than words when it comes to setting an example for the people you lead.
You need to be the most diligent, hard-working, focused person on the team. There’s something about
when a leader is willing to go the extra mile and set a premium example; it will inspire others to raise their
level and quality of effort as well.

What Are the Qualities of Good Leadership?

A person who holds a leadership role may not always have the qualities that make a good leader. These
qualities can be key to a company's success . Often, good leaders will get down in the trenches and work
alongside their team, developing the leadership skills of those around them.

Confidence

A good leader must have the confidence to make decisions and set a clear direction. Good leaders also
instill confidence in others and encourage others to step up and lead.
Stress Management

During times of stress, good leaders will remain calm, focused and stay on track while keeping emotions at
bay. Others look to their leader for strength in times of stress.

Communication Skills

Good leadership requires good communication. Effective leaders can clearly communicate their vision and
objectives to their team. They are skilled in the areas of public speaking and interviewing.

Responsibility

Leaders must take responsibility for their decisions and actions. Mistakes are a part of life, and good
leaders take ownership of their mistakes.

Lead by Example

Leading by an example will show team members what is expected of them and what is or is not acceptable.
Good leaders set an example that others wish to follow.

Decision Making

Leaders must be able to think on their feet and make prudent and quick decisions. Difficult problems often
need immediate solutions.

How to Develop Personal Leadership Skills

Leadership is a process by which a person influences others to accomplish goals and directs an organization
to make it more cohesive and coherent. A good leader takes the skills required by an effective manager,
embodies the attributes of a good employee, and inspires others to mirror those qualities while aiming for
more.

Step 1

Challenge the process. Leaders challenge and question commonly accepted methods. Embrace innovative
processes and procedures early on. Learn from and flourish in difficult situations.

Step 2

Inspire a shared vision. Align the visions of the employees with the vision of the organization.
Communicate this vision so employees adopt it as their own. Fear tactics are less effective motivators than
imagination. Capture the imagination of your employees and align it with the vision of the organization.
These are crucial skills to being a successful leader.

Step 3
Enable others to act. Give employees the tools, training and resources to effectively and efficiently do their
jobs and solve problems.

Step 4

Model the way things need to be done. Actions speak louder than words. Employees are more apt to follow
a leader whose actions embody what his words say. This also means getting your hand dirty when things
get difficult.

Step 5

Encourage the heart within your company. People act on what they are passionate about. Inspire your
employees with your personal stories of success.

How to Develop Leadership for the 21st Century

Describing the leadership role in today’s dynamic environment as challenging is an understatement at best.
The size of staff or type of organization does not matter. Leading takes more than directing and delegating,
it takes leadership with real intuition. Effective leaders must add a few “soft skills” to their bag of tricks in
order to develop highly motivated staff and forward moving organizations. This does not require higher
education, but it does require an individual to be introspective, empathetic, authentic, and connected.
Developing leadership skills is a professional undertaking that demands personal reflection and
development.

Step 1

First, as Shakespeare put it so eloquently, “To Thine Own Self Be True”. Examine your strengths and
weaknesses. Understand how you react in different environments and situations. Emotions manifest
themselves in physical reactions. Recognizing these physical responses to different stimuli will allow you
to preempt disruptive responses and channel the energy in a positive manner.

Step 2

Make it a practice being cognizant of what your behaviors are so you are able to purposely respond as
opposed to reacting. There is a certain investment in integrity and authenticity that generates tremendous
payoff in the long run. People are sensitive to inconsistencies and will respond with resistance if they sense
disparities in behaviors. Converting reactions to responses creates positive energy and will generate respect
from peers and support staff. Managing emotions and self regulation creates a sense of stability.

Step 3

Know yourself. Create an environment conducive to performance using your personal strengths. Leaders
must take inventory of their personal belief system and expel those that prove to be counterproductive. This
requires introspection and absolute commitment to excellence in leadership.
Step 4

Stripping away layers to reveal a true sense of personal values is not accomplished in an afternoon. Time
must be set aside to purposely examine the ideals that drive performance. Developing a personal vision and
mission statement can be a particularly valuable endeavor. Through self awareness the ability to evaluate
situations and proffer appropriate responses develops.

Step 5

The ability to clearly assess circumstances facilitates determining the approach that will compel individuals
to perform. In some instances a directive may be necessary to jump start an initiative that has stalled. In
other cases, more subtle behaviors such as coaching and collaboration can encourage a reluctant participant
to become fully engaged. Knowing how and when to apply these different approaches makes the difference
between an adequate manager and an inspiring leader. As your integrity increases, your ability to lead
becomes second nature.

Step 6

Leaders do not function in a vacuum. Understanding the impact of your actions and activities on those
around you is imperative. High profile leadership sets the tone and defines the environment. This being
said, leaders must be visionary. Creating a vision for the future compels the rest of the organization to align
their efforts with the vision. This alignment does not happen automatically, it takes strong communication
and coaching skills to guide staff members toward defining their role in a concerted effort to attain the
organizational vision. This is the point where it is crucial to understand the impact leaders have on others.

Step 7

This knowledge provides leadership with the insight needed to approach staff members in a manner that
maintains trust and good faith. Failure to establish this connection creates a void between the vision and
execution. Voids create weakness in the organization and undermines the foundation it is built on. This in
turn will destroy any integrity built up by leadership and begin a downward spiral that will be difficult to
reverse.

Step 8

In short, self awareness, self management, social awareness and relationship management are the
cornerstones to effective leadership. These four behavioral segments are found to be present in exceptional
leaders, and lacking in those who do not excel. In depth analysis of each of these behaviors has generated
research in the field of emotional intelligence. Further exploration of these topics can be found in a number
of sources including the website http://www.eiconsortium.org/

How to Develop Leadership Skills in Children

The term leadership skills refers to a series of skills that allow people to succeed in management and
directorial positions. When it comes to learning leadership skills, kids are in a winning position, as they can
be taught without pressure and guided through the process at their own pace.
Step 1

Focus on developing communication skills. Good leaders are good communicators, and this can be
encouraged from an early age by working on reading and speaking. If your kids can't read yet, take over the
duties and work on their listening skills. You can encourage this by reading something to them and then
asking them to relate the story back to you. If your children are old enough to read, ask them to read you a
story. Also, make sure that you hold conversations with your kids. Ask questions and expect answers, no
matter how silly they are, as this means that they are listening and learning to interact.

Step 2

Encourage independence within safe limits. You can't expect a five-year-old to make his own breakfast, but
he should be able to pour his own cereal, set his place on the table or take over the day's menu.
Encouraging independent play is also important. Turn off the TV and give your kids access to interactive
games and toys that develop the imagination, such as building sets, question and answer books and old-
fashioned, plain toys. If the words "I'm bored" come into play, let the kids find a way to entertain
themselves rather than offering a solution. This also helps develop the imagination.

Step 3

Instill confidence in your kids. When something new is accomplished, praise it, whether it is a new
development at school, learning how to tie their own shoes or reading faster or with less mistakes. Small
steps mean a lot at that age and kids will revel in accomplishments that may not seem all that important to
you. Developing self-esteem is essential to achieving leadership skills, as leaders need to come through as
confident, even in the face of danger or despair.

Step 4

If your children say that they can do something for themselves, let them do it. The attempt is more
important than the result. This goes for almost anything, from setting up the table to cleaning up the
bedroom. Even if the results are less than satisfying, praise your children and resist the urge to fix things
yourself.

Step 5

Encourage organization. Leaders need to know how to manage their time and guide others towards a
common goal. You can encourage this by giving your children the power to make decisions. For example,
older kids can take part in the planning and organization of a trip, deciding how to change or decorate a
room or choosing their own after-school activities. You can also use these opportunities to help yours kid
develop problem-solving skills, as they may have to make choices to meet budget, time or environmental
constraints.

How to Create a Leadership Competency Model

This article provides a how to guide for creating a leadership competency model.
A competency is a skill, ability, or knowledge set that can be taught or developed. All competencies have
“indicators” that allow them to be observed and measured. A leadership competency model is a group of
competencies linked to leadership excellence in a specific organization. A leadership competency model
supports the organization’s vision and strategy by providing a framework by which the organization can
select, develop, and evaluate leaders.

Ultimately, a competency model should become a way of talking about leadership in your organization.
Employees are given a common language and framework to discuss and guide their personal leadership
development as well as leadership in the organization in general.
Ideally, the competency model will influence the way leaders are selected, trained, and evaluated in the
organization, so as to set standards and to highlight desired leader behaviors.

Step 1

Create lists of behaviors to determine what good leadership looks like in your organization.

This can be done in one of three ways: interviews with leaders in your organization, strategic planning
sessions discussing important leadership issues in the present and for the future, or selecting behaviors from
competencies known to be important from a database created by experts.

Step 2

Use the following guidelines to group common behaviors and name them. These will be your leadership
competencies.

• Competency names should be as specific as possible.

• They should also be a noun (e.g., delegation) or a gerund (e.g., listening).
• Names should be easily understood, so avoid jargon and ambiguous words with more than one meaning.
• Use adjectives to clarify ambiguous nouns (e.g., disciplined management).

Step 3

Finally, define the competencies.

Competency definitions, as with competency names, should be unambiguous and specific. Use complete
sentences when writing definitions, and avoid jargon and abbreviations. Also, a competency should be
observable. Your competency definition should specify the “what” and the “why.” For example, a
definition of active listening should include the what: “Communicating and clarifying understanding, and
eliciting information using both active and passive behaviors,” and the why: “In order to engage others,
make people feel heard, and gather information.” Using these parts, active listening would then be defined
as “Communicating and clarifying understanding, and eliciting information using both active and passive
behaviors, in order to engage others, make people feel heard, and gather information.” If you find the
competency you have created is not observable through leader behaviors, it is likely that you have created a
meta-competency – a larger pattern of behavior made up of a set of related competencies.

How to Learn Good Leadership as a Boss

Learning good leadership is a key part of being a manager, supervisor, boss, administrator, or any type of
team leader. Anybody who ends up in a leadership role will find himself or herself struggling to lead others
effectively. Learn the steps for helping you develop leadership traits and become a respected leader among
your employees, team or group as you learn good leadership.

Step 1

Motivate your employees. To lead a team to give a superior performance, make sure your employees feel
vested in what they do. Grant them ownership of their work so they feel accountable for their projects'
success. Give your employees incentives to excel. Raises. Bonuses. Perks. Benefits. Titles. Reward not just
job performance, but team spirit.

Step 2

Communicate with your employees. Fill your employees in on the company's mission and vision. Keep
your employees in the loop as much as possible when changes are afoot. Get employees' feedback on
workflow. Make employees a part of the decision-making process as much as possible. Communication
empowers your employees and makes them more proactive in the workplace. Though you may find this
inconvenient at times, communication allows your employees to grow along with the company. When you
communicate, you are more likely to be a respected leader.

Step 3

Set an example for your employees. Demonstrate good leadership by being a team player, yourself. Show
your employees how to cooperate, share resources, work together, and do their best.

Step 4

Coordinate the workflow. Good leadership involves a certain amount of control over workflow, procedures,
and work environment . Don't have a laissez faire management attitude. Get involved in steering your
team in the direction you want them to go.

Step 5

Be human with your staff and colleagues. Don't try to hide your weaknesses or display only your strengths,
like the stereotypical hard-nosed boss. Admit it when you encounter personal limits. Demonstrate good
leadership by showing your employees constructive ways to deal with obstructions, conflict, and problems.

Step 6

Lead. Lead in everything you do. Show your employees you are not just their boss but a professional
resource for them. Furnish employee training, teach conflict resolution, and take a positive attitude toward
change.

Step 7

Learn leadership traits in training courses to develop your leadership skills . Never be afraid to go back to
school to improve your leadership abilities.
How to Be a Good Leader or Boss
Many people want to be the boss, but few have learned to lead well. If you are in a position of leadership,
you will do well to pattern yourself after The Greatest Leader in the World.

By implementing these important characteristics into your leadership style, you will find that most people
will happily follow you.

Step 1

A simple Thumbs Up goes a long way in making someone feel good

APPRECIATE PEOPLE
Let others know that you appreciation them. Especially help them feel appreciated when they are feeling
down. As a leader, you have a lot of influence and power over the attitude of those you supervise, even if
though you may not be able to change their circumstance.

What better way to make people "want" to follow you than to help them feel good about themselves by
knowing they are appreciated.

Step 2

Everyone needs to know they have done well

PRAISE AND ENCOURAGE

There is nothing like praise and encouragement to have people eating out of your hand. Be generous with
both of these. Say something encouraging each day, and as often as possible try to find at least one thing
you can applaud.

Step 3

Eye contact is key in making others feel important

REALLY LISTEN
Be truly present to those you lead. Do not interrupt someone in mid sentence simply to speak to someone
else as they walk by. Do not look at your watch when someone is talking to you. Maintain full eye contact
and do so with an expression that shows interest.

Real listening plays a tremendous part in helping you understand who these people really are that have been
placed under your leadership.

Step 4

Kindly offer help when someone has made a mistake

BE HUMBLE WHEN POINTING OUT MISTAKES

As a leader, it is important for you to let people know when they have not done something correctly.
However, as with everything we do or say, it's all in "how it's said" that will make the difference.

When you have to point out an error, or that someone may be heading down the wrong path, do so with an
example in mind of one of your own big ones! Remember how you felt. Remember how you needed your
superior to handle this with you. If you feel comfortable, you might even share something of your own
mistake(s) with this person.

How to Become a Leader Instead of a Boss

Becoming a leader in your role as owner, manager, supervisor, or administrator can have many advantages
over being a boss. If you want your employees to be autonomous and independent in their work,
accomplishing their tasks with a minimum of supervision, then become a leader and watch your employees
follow your lead. Learn to lead your team like a leader instead of rule your employees like a boss, and you
will become the motivational force in your company.

Step 1

Think of your employees as a team and yourself as their leader. Avoid attempting to control your
employees' every move. Take the view that it's your job to get your employees to want to do their jobs, just
as a coach or manager of a sports team would get the team members to perform with enthusiasm and vigor.

Step 2

Inspire your employees with your vision for the business, company, or institution for which you work.
Share your vision of what you want to achieve and fire your employees with your own enthusiasm.

Step 3

Motivate your employees with your concerns. As much as possible, let your employees know when the
team's in trouble, when the team needs to improve performance, and when the team is being called to
action.
Step 4

Motivate your employees with tangible rewards like a good salary and bonuses and employee benefits .
Show your employees the advantage to being a productive part of the team. Being a good leader means
being practical and understanding that your staff did not join the company out of a sense of goodwill, but
rather has to make a living.

Step 5

Be a leader who is accessible. Unlike the boss or manager who discourages two-way communication
between employees and management, let your employees know their feedback and concerns are always
welcome. Provide employees with many ways to contact you so they truly feel they have access to
communication with you.

Step 6

Be strong and effective. A leader is a leader because she or he can take resourceful action in times of
conflict, troubleshoot problems, and provide concrete solutions to ongoing issues. Be someone who can do
what needs to be done in times of crisis.

Step 7

Be a role model. Behave in the business and work environment as you want your staff to behave. If you
want honesty, be honest. If you want loyalty, show loyalty to your staff. In business, as in life, people learn
by example.

Step 8

Avoid exploiting your position as manager and boss to your own exclusive benefit. In other words, a leader
leads by being part of the team, not above it. If you're lenient with yourself, be lenient with your
employees. If the team succeeds, share the praise and rewards with your employees.

Step 9

Respect, honor, and take full advantage of the skills and talents of your staff. Your employees are your
team; let them do the work. Leading employees means avoiding micromanaging. Empower employees to
work by giving them as many freedoms to do their jobs as possible, within the constraints of company
policy .

Step 10

Insist on the same freedoms and rewards and respect that you give your employees. You have limitations
and needs, yourself. While you must have high standards for your own behavior, a good leader takes care
of him or herself. A suffering or stressed leader leads to less than optimal leadership. Your taking care of
your own needs, both personal and professional, helps reduce work stress in everyone.

role model. This reality begs you to do things reasonably, not rashly. Consider it a great honor to be a role
model.

Take some people under your wings and help them on their life journeys. It is important to impart your
knowledge and success to several willing disciples. Train others to take your place sometime in the future.

Step 3

know that it is alright to fall and fail sometimes. Let your humanity come through in your dealings with
people you are helping.

How to be a Good Role Model

Good role models are an important part of life. They can guide, motivate, help shape, and aid a person of
any age and under any circumstance. Unfortunately, bad role models, which can accomplish just as much
bad as good role models can good, are just as prevalent - perhaps even more so! But you can help change
this. Read on for some great tips on how you can become a good role model!

Step 1

Be a Good Person - Good people are liked, admired, and loved. Bad people are abhorred, despised, and
avoided. The basic foundational quality for being a good role model is to be a good person; a person who is
thoughtful, considerate, respectful, and just plain good! Good people radiate warmth and positivity; let the
goodness in you shine!

Step 2

Always Do the Right Thing - Let your conscience and innate sense of right and wrong guide you througout
your everday life. Unless you have brain damage or some mental block, you have a God-given sense of
what is right and wrong. Always strive to do what is right, and frown on what is wrong. Doing this will not
only enable you to sleep well at night but will also highlight you as being a person of substance and value -
a good role model!

Step 3

Admit Your Mistakes - Owning up to your mistakes and errors in judgment will solidify your status as a
good role model. A good role model is a person who is fallible - a person who is not perfect. Fallible people
make mistakes from time to time; they can trip up and fall just as easily as the next person. Admit your
mistakes, dust yourself off, and get back to being a good person - a good role model!
Step 4

Never Stop Growing - Never stop growing and trying to better or further yourself. Don't get cocky or
complacent and start thinking that you have reached a certain level in life and can lay back and coast. Being
a good role model entails always taking stock of yourself and making adjustments and advances. Push
yourself towards greater heights and always be open to change!

How to be a good role model and positive

influence.
Are you a good role model? Do people follow your lead? What is a good role model? How can you
positively influence someone? Is there positive peer pressure?

Step 1

Lead by example.
Act the way you want other people to act.
Treat people the way you want to be treated.

Step 2

Set a good example.

Think about what you are doing and how it will effect other people.
Make good decision that can be passed on.

Step 3

Spread the word and make it something good.

What you put out into the world will come back.
How is your language?
Do you say things that someone might repeat? If yes, than make it something good.

Step 4

Say it with clothes.

Do you dress in a way that people want to copy? Think about
the people around you and what would set a good example. Make sure your clothes fit and are not too tight
or too loose. TV images and magazine pictures end up being influences to everyone who see them. You are
an influence to everyone who sees you.

Step 5

Twist your words in a good way.

Instead of saying "I think you should wear this...".
Say "I think you would look beautiful in this."
Its all in the phrasing. Make your words irresistible.
Step 6

Be kind.
There is nothing better than someone saying "Wow, She is really a nice person. Put kindness out and you
will get kindness back.

Step 7

Respect yourself.
Don't do things you will regret. Don't get talked into doing something you don't want to do. You are the
only person in control of you. Be a leader not a follower.

Step 8

Block the negative out.

Stay away from repeating the negative. It does nothing more than put more negative energy into the world.
Ignore negative comments or twist them into positive ones.
If someone says " I hate her, she's fat, stupid, irritating.... Follow up with "I think she's really smart and
she's always on time." Use any positive thing you can think of, Stop the gossip.
After a while people won't come to you with negative comments anymore because you don't wallow in the
negativity with them.

chouse to let it fly in the air for latter. In the end of the day, you are responsible for your life; it is you who

selves it this, only for them this will be interesting journey like it was for me. In next couple of days we
will share some techniques, some tools, and some practical advices on the subject. See you soon.

How to Think Like a Leader

Leadership comes in various shapes and sizes. The roll of a leader can also differ depending on the
environment and the task at hand. From the CEO of a fortune 500 company to mom who is leading her
small children on a daily bases. Church leaders, coaches, teachers, among a list of others are all leaders to
some degree. One important aspect of a leaders life is their though process. As a man thinks so he becomes.
How should a leader think? Let's find out.

Step 1

Leaders think BIG - The vision of a leader should be bigger than them.

Step 2

Leaders think of OTHERS - Including others in the project, task, and fulfillment of the goal is important to
any leaders success. You are only as good as the people around you.

Step 3

Leaders always THINK - Always thinking of how to move forward, how to improve, how to make the
current situation better.

Step 4

Leaders think of personal GROWTH - Always growing always moving forward. You can only lead people
where you have already been.

Step 5

Leaders think QUICKLY - A leader is able to think quickly and make clear decisive decisions on a
moments notice.
How to Lead Like a Natural Leader
Some people seem to be natural leaders. Others have to develop the skills to become great leaders. This
'How To' briefly explains the three basic skills all leaders possess. You can be a great leader; just build your
skills.

Step 1

Develop a vision of greatness. What do your people want or need to accomplish? Where do you need to
go together, some point to reach or accomplishment that people must stretch to attain. Some examples
could be to win a game, reach a sales goal, write a book, start a business or a church. This vision must be
challenging and attainable. It must be relevant to the reason the people are together. Your vision may be the
mission of the group or a specific project you are trying to acomplish. Your vision peaks people's interest!

Step 2

Communication! Develop an extraordinary sense of communication with your people. You must 'connect.'
Leaders speak to their people in such a way that everyone understands; not an easy task. Telling people to
do tasks is NOT the same as a developing rapport. Developing rapport means speaking so each listener
understands and, then, DESIRES to accomplish the vision. You speak to the listener, but not be
condescending. Improve your speaking and listening skills. Excellent communication greatly improves
your ability to accomplish strategic objectives.

Step 3

Be trustworthy. Probably the toughest leadership trait is to get people to trust you. It sounds easy to just be
trustworthy. However, everyone wants to get what he/she 'deserves' out of the organization. When people
percieve your personal intentions far outweigh their interests, you lose trust and leadership credibility. The
next step explains some of the attributes that help you become trustworthy.

Step 4

-Show that you are dedicated to the vision. Believe to the point that you sacrifice or will sacrifice as
needed!
-Dress the role of the leader. Maybe a suit, maybe coveralls and boots. Your appearance tells people
whether or not you are working toward your vision.
-Show that you care about your people. Ensure mail and paychecks are delivered. Ensure people take
necessary breaks. Ensure people are trained to and understand your standards.
-Show confidence in your people. Trust that your people will make good decisions. If you can't do this,
conduct training/counseling to build your team's maturity. Usually, the team's maturity mirrors the leader's
maturity.
-Keep people informed. Develop several communication techniques, ie. face-to-face meetings, written
notes, signage, e-mail, daily/weekly newsletters, bulletins, good policy manuals, procedure books, uniforms
with a message/slogan.
-Follow up, follow up, follow up. If you don't follow up, eventually, tasks don't get done. If you don't care
enough to follow up and thank people for their work, you will not succeed and you are not a leader.
-Reward people for their exemplary work. Create an atmosphere that rewards people who contribute greatly
toward the vision. People love to be recognized! Leaders have the self-confidence to rewards others, even
their peers!
-Develop basic management skills. Management skills include planning, organizing, people/counseling
skills, and control skills. Get any basic management book to learn more about these skills. Know who your
best planners are (Planning). Likewise, who organizes people and equipment well (Organizing)? Who can
train/counsel others (People/counseling)? Who can decide if the team is on the right track or is wasting
resources (Control)? You must have a good understanding of each of these. However, if you can deligate
some of these tasks to a group expert, you demostrate excellent leadership!
-Be technically competent. Know your industry's details. Read trade magazines. Understand what is new
and upcoming in your business. Constantly study and learn. Expect your people to do the same.
-Display great integrity. Expect people to do as you do.
-Have courage and encourage others. Take smart well-thought out risks rather than gamble.
-Associate with other leaders. Be involved as a member of leadership associations.
-Be proactive. Don't rest on past success. Build for the future.
-Be effective and efficient. Use resources wisely.
-Stay calm!

Step 5

Understand that some people will simply never follow you. They may never follow anyone. Treat these
people fairly and consistently. Expect to have difficult days/weeks/years. Other people may also have their
future ambitions as taking your position. They may not see you as a leader and may work against you.
These people will test your leadership ability.
Stay strong and determined! Work with your people and enjoy working toward your vision. It is your
decision to be a leader, anyway. If you don't lead, who will?
Self-evaluate your performance. Guaranteed, everyone else is evaluating you.
Have fun in your leadership roles. Their is no reason to be an emotional drain on your organization. Build
up everyone.

How to Be a Natural Leader

Some people are born leaders. They manage to gain respect from peers and subordinates because of the
way they conduct themselves. It is not always necessary to be born with the capacity to lead in order to
become a natural leader. Sometimes it may just mean tapping into available resources and using them
wisely. Here’s how to become a natural leader.

Step 1

Perform a self-evaluation. Natural leaders consistently take an objective view of themselves so they can
in turn assess the people and situations that occur around them. Take an inventory of strengths and
weaknesses and determine goals for improving and evolving into a better version of self. This can take the
form of a daily journal. Note events and reactions to events and whether or not the reactions were positive
and negative. Over time, the process of journaling will bring about a better knowledge of self.

Step 2

Pursue mentors who are proven natural leaders. Leadership doesn’t happen in a vacuum. All natural
leaders need some help from willing mentors. Seek those mentors and ask for guidance in various
scenarios. Figure out a mentor’s thought process. It is not necessary to mimic a mentor. It is valuable,
however, to understand why thoughtful people think what they think.

Step 3

Become a critical thinker. Many times leaders have to dig through false arguments and present the real
issue so that other people can understand the true issues. If, for example, a co-worker has an issue with
another co-worker in the workplace, leaders can peel away surface arguments and find out why the
employees really have issues with one another.

Step 4

Read about leadership. Books written about leadership can take up an entire section of a bookstore. Read
several different views on leadership. It is not necessary to agree with everyone’s theory on leadership, but
it helps to understand personal views on natural leadership.

How to Act Like a Strong Leader

Crisis creates strong leaders. What are the important skills a strong leader needs to have and how to
develop them so you could act like a strong leader? Here are some food for thought.

Step 1

Know how to deal with ambiguity.

The increasingly competitive world means you won't have the luxury to get all the information you need in
order to make an important decision. You need to balance the price you will have to pay for the complete
information and the price you will have to pay for making a decision right now instead of waiting.

Step 2

Know how to control and express your emotions.

A strong leader knows how to reason and how to act on emotion, and knows that reasoning and emotion are
not two separate things, they should be combined to make important business decisions.

Step 3

Know how to take responsibilities.

A strong leader is one who takes responsibility and knows what it means. A strong leader is able to
approach one's social and business environments and deal with then with confidence.

Step 4

Know how to manage technological changes.

A strong leader is one who keeps on learning new things and applying the new technological tools to the
job and improves the performance each day.

How to be a Strong Leader

A leader is not born, a leader is created. Every great leader has become the master of self discipline and self
control. Setting a goal and achieving it by leading others to success along the way.

Step 1

Set your goal. In order to achieve your goal you are going to need to do each of the following steps. At this
point you will become a leader.

Step 2

Communicate with your team what your goal is and how you plan to achieve it. Listen to your team,
some of them may have very solid ideas on achieving your goal.

A good leader listens as well as talks to his or her team.

Step 3

Follow through in what you say you will do. If you cannot follow through, designate it to someone else
and return the favor at a later time.

Step 4

In order to achieve your goal you have to keep the momentum going. Never give up. Find a new way to
do it. As the old saying goes, "there's more than one way to skin a cat" (no offense intended to cat lovers
here). If at first you don't succeed, try try again.

Step 5

Praise and criticize constructively. This is your team, if someone makes you mad or messes up, find a
positive way to tell them so. Take them aside, keep it private and get through the situation with minimal
stress.

Praise in front of everyone. It is always good for others to see and hear you praise those who deserve it.
This will go far to keep the momentum going.

Step 6

Know what each person is good at. Assign tasks accordingly. If one person is great at planning but not as
good at completing a task, divide it up between several of your employees. Be an especially good sport
about this if you are the one that is not as good at something.

Step 7

Be their leader first and their friend second. Expect high quality from your friends and they will give it to
you.

Step 8

Keep a positive attitude and be willing to put your share of the time in on said project too.
Step 9

Celebrate when the task is accomplished. Whether it be a pizza party or a barbecue take an afternoon to
celebrate that your task is complete and enjoy some time with your friends.

How to Become a 4-H Leader

Volunteering to be a 4-H Leader can be a rewarding experience for both you and the youths whose lives
you touch. You can assist children to gain life skills and more self confidence during a couple of hours in
the afternoons for two or more days a month. To begin the process, review the information outlined here.

Step 1

Decide what type of volunteer you want to be. You may choose to be a project leader, activity leader or a
general organizational leader. There are also leadership roles as resource volunteers, junior leaders, teen
leaders or collegiate leaders.

Step 2

Complete the 4-H volunteer application.

Step 3

Mail the application to your local county extension office. You will be notified once your application has
been approved and accepted.

Step 4

Participate in a 4-H New Club Leaders session. This should last about 2 hours. Optional online training is
provided as well.

Step 5

Start your volunteer service. Prepare to teach youths about topics that are of interest to them.

Step 6

Gather a group of youths together who have similar interests and discuss what project your group will
choose to pursue. Pick a name for the club and schedule meeting times and dates.

Step 7

Enroll your new group at your local county extension office and pay any fees due.

How to Be a Failure-Tolerant Leader

Good leaders do everything in their power to help their teams succeed, and often as not this includes
helping employees accept failure and learn from their mistakes. To do this, a boss or manager must become
a failure-tolerant leader. Work on mastering the following techniques, and you'll become the failure-
tolerant leader who inspires your people to succeed.

Step 1

Re-evaluate your personal views on failure. Do you believe that failing at something makes someone a
"failure"? If so, remember that, like learning to walk, significant professional development takes time and
usually results from a series of incremental improvements punctuated by temporary setbacks along the way.
Begin to think of failure as simply a precursor to success.

Step 2

Recognize failure as a valuable learning experience. Every time the toddler falls down, he learns how to do
it a little bit better the next time. Eventually, through trial, error and repetition, he becomes thoroughly
confident and fully adept in the art of walking. The same thing happens with your company's employees.

Step 3

Inspire your employees to believe in themselves. Do this by communicating and demonstrating your own
confidence in their ability to succeed--without placing undue pressure on them to do so. Be sure you've also
provided them with all the information, training and resources they'll need to get the job done. This will
make them more eager to take carefully calculated risks that could potentially lead to failure and yet are
also indispensable to success.

Step 4

Be objective when an employee experiences a setback. Rather than criticizing the employee and his or her
ability, review the situation calmly and rationally. Figure out where the original plan derailed and why,
discuss this with the employee without placing blame, and work together as allies to bring the plan back on
track.

Step 5

Develop a superior new plan. Take the lessons learned from the original setback and use them to create a
strategy that takes into account the weaknesses inherent in the earlier plan. Be flexible enough to change
any policies, practices and other factors that appear to be hindering progress. Solicit employee input in the
development of your new success strategy.

Step 6

Encourage your employee to give it another go. Point out the things he or she did right the first time,
despite the setback, and then discuss the new tools that will help ensure that things go more smoothly the
second time around. By rebuilding your employee's confidence after a setback, you'll pave the way for a
more positive, proactive, and potentially profitable effort the next time. You'll also have succeeded in
becoming a failure-tolerant leader!
How to Make a Fishing Leader
A leader is a stronger section of monofilament or wire that protects the fishing line from damage.
Sometimes a leader may also be used to reduce the visibility of the fishing line. Leaders can range from 3
inches to 10 or more feet in length, depending on the species targeted and the fishing conditions.
Monofilament leaders are normally used, except for toothy fish where a wire leader may be called for. All
fishermen should know how to rig leaders.

How to Make a Fishing Leader

Step 1

Decide if you need a wire or monofilament leader. Use the side cutters to cut the leader to the required
length. Make sure that you add 8-10 inches to each end for tying the knots.

Step 2

Take one of the barrel swivels and, using a uni-knot, tie the swivel to the fishing line. Trim the excess
length from the knot. The monofilament can also be tied directly to the fishing line using 2 uni-knots.

Step 3

If using the wire leader, attach the wire to the barrel swivel using a haywire twist. For the monofilament
leader, use another uni-knot to attach the leader to the barrel swivel.

Step 4

Take the fishing lure or hook and and tie them to the leader. Use another Haywire Twist for the wire leader,
or a uni-knot for the monofilament leader.

Step 5

Now go and catch the big one, without worrying about the line breaking.

Tips & Warnings

• Tying your leader directly to the fishing line allows you to reel the leader through the rod tip and
eyelets, making the lure easier to cast.
• Be careful not to kink the wire leader when attaching the leader to the barrel swivel.
• Always wear safety glasses when working with wire leaders.

How to Start a Youth Leadership Organization

A youth leadership organization is usually a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering and educating
children ages 8 to 18 to become leaders and to develop their natural leadership abilities. Youth leadership
organizations usually hold several camps, programs or events aimed at teaching these qualities. Starting a
youth leadership organization takes hard work, dedication and a passion for helping youths increase their
self-esteem, confidence and social skills. Creating goals and finding volunteers who are willing to help you
is the first step toward building a successful nonprofit youth organization.

Step 1

Create your mission statement and goals. A mission includes the purpose and goals of the organization,
along with the objective audience and who the organization will benefit. Mission statements can be as short
as one sentence or as long as a page or two, depending on what the organization needs to convey in its
statement.

Step 2

Incorporate and exempt your nonprofit youth leadership organization. Incorporating a nonprofit isn't very
costly and will protect you from some legal liability. Filing for nonprofit tax-exempt status will lower your
tax burden and qualify you for reduced postage rates. Be sure to research the steps toward incorporation
and tax-exempt status in your state.

Step 3

Find people to help. People who are interested in your youth leadership organization will be more likely to
volunteer to help with events and to serve on the board of directors. Place fliers in day-care centers,
schools, churches and on community message boards will spread the word about your new organization.

Step 4

Plan yearly fundraisers and apply for grants. Additionally, the federal government and other corporations
may have grants available for youth-oriented programs. Finding corporate sponsors and grant money will
help create a healthy nonprofit organization that can help as many youths as possible.

Step 5

Plan youth programs. Because the main aspiration of youth leadership organizations is to provide
leadership development training to children, it is important to schedule annual or regular camps, learning
days and field trips that will provide this training. An annual weekly summer camp is a great way to
provide advanced leadership training. After-school clubs and weekend trips can also provide great training
opportunities. If the budget allows, providing scholarships will reduce costs for youths from low-income
families.

How to Be a Good Youth Leader

Do you have a desire to work with youth? If so, you may want to consider working as a youth leader for a
local organization. Youth leaders can work in a variety of settings such as churches, shelters, after-school
programs and summer camps. Many youth leaders find their job to be very exciting and rewarding. Being a
youth leader requires good leadership skills , patience, dedication, compassion for youth and good
listening skills. However, there are other important characteristics that can make you a good youth leader,
as well.

Step 1

Ask the youth about their needs and goals. In order to be an effective youth leader, you need to know how
you can best help the youth in your organization. So, spend some time getting to know each of them and be
sure to ask them about their interests, likes, dislikes and goals.

Step 2

Show the youth that you care about them. Youth leaders should be kind, caring and understanding toward
all of the youth in that organization. A good youth leader loves working with the group, and he always
gives the members the attention and inspiration that they need to help them grow and learn. As a youth
leader, you should also make every effort to let the youth know that you are there for them as a friend.

Step 3

Let the youth know they can talk to you about their concerns. Young people need to know that they can
come to you if they have any questions or problems. And a good youth leader is always ready to listen to
the members of the group, if they need someone to talk to. So, try to establish a bond with the youth group
and let them know that it is OK to trust you.

Step 4

Get the youth involved in the organization. Try to think of creative ways to keep the youth interested and
motivated. For example, maybe you can think of fun activities for the youth to do like singing, painting,
writing or doing arts and crafts. Or perhaps you can take the youth on a field trip or to see a movie.

Step 5

Commit yourself to helping the youth succeed. A good youth leader spends as much time with the group as
possible, in order to help them accomplish their goals. This sometimes means working extra hours (nights
and weekends) and taking on additional tasks and projects. However, a good youth leader doesn’t mind
devoting extra time to the organization because her primary goal is attending to the youth and making sure
their needs are met.

The Role of Leadership in Business

Leadership is an essential character trait in business. The role of leadership and how it affects businesses
and employees is a work in process. Learning to understand where leadership starts and how it affects an
organization is the first step in becoming a successful leader.
Managers and Leaders

Leadership in the business world is a multifaceted character trait. Some people have unique personality
traits that make them natural leaders. Others can rise up and become leaders when necessary. In business,
the first distinction of leadership is to define management. Being a good manager and a good leader are
separate roles.

Management

When a person starts a job he begins dreaming of being a manager. While managers are important players
in a successful business , often they are not leaders. A manager will work toward specific goals: reducing
labor hours while improving efficiency, finding cheaper raw materials and increasing sales. These tasks are
important, but the ability to accomplish them is not essential for leaders.

Leadership

A leader is someone who provides guidance or direction. An entrepreneurs starts a businesses because he
has a vision. The vision usually is of filling a need in the marketplace or taking an existing product and
refining it. These visionaries never stop looking for an opportunity in the business world. They accomplish
their goals through employees in an organization.

How to Lead

Here are some leadership traits.

Have a vision: leaders see potential where others may not.
Inspire others: leaders have the ability to get others on board with their vision.
Stay the course: leaders will not sway from their vision if they truly believe in it.
Rewarding others: leaders will reward those helping him accomplish his vision.

These leadership traits are important to reflect upon when working toward an end goal.

Maximizing Potential

Effective leaders understand that they need others to help them accomplish goals. One cannot lead if no one
is following. Leaders will find staff members who are creative and will add to the organizational success of
the leader's vision. A leader will also inspire his employees about his vision, creating an environment where
everyone is ready to sacrifice in order to accomplish goals.

How to Select a Leader

Leaders are made, not born. This short article helps you find the easiest method to select a leader for
whatever purpose is required

Step 1

Determine leadership qualities

Step 2
Figure out how the candidate best fits needs

Step 3

Will the leadership candidate fit into the company/organisation image

How to Improve Flexible Leadership

Flexible leadership becomes more essential as diversity in the workplace continues to rise. Differences in
skill level and personality, as well as cultural differences of employees, make flexibility a highly desirable
leadership trait. Flexibility allows a leader to adapt behavior to develop more appropriate responses in
different situations, and managers are more valuable to an organization when they're able to adapt to the
responsibilities of different positions.

Step 1

Consider a candidate's flexibility when making hiring and promotion decisions. Place those with a
demonstrated ability to adapt to changing circumstances in management roles. Choose candidates with
varied backgrounds over those who have spent their entire career in one position with one company. Assess
candidates' ability to think quickly and choose appropriate responses during the interview process.

Step 2

Implement a leadership development program. Expose new managers to different departments and
experiences. Require new managers to work for prescribed lengths of time in different areas of the
organization and at different levels before completing their management training.

Step 3

Require your management staff to undergo regular flexibility training. Conduct workshops and seminars
that teach your leaders how to diagnose different situations and determine which action will produce the
most desirable outcome. Employ role-playing and other activities that teach your managers to think on their
feet and create win-win outcomes in difficult situations.

Step 4

Train your management staff in crisis management. Crisis situations can include changes in executive
leadership, natural disasters, hostile company takeovers, company restructuring, layoffs and many more
circumstances that create change. Prepare your managers to lead your employees through any crisis to
ensure the stability of your company during periods of transition.

Step 5

Embrace change and flexibility within your organization. Make adaptability a part of your company's
mission, and foster a sense of community among your employees. Make your team aware that your
company is on the cutting edge of technology, which involves frequent change. Demonstrate to your
employees through leadership and management that flexibility is a desirable trait and that change is to be
embraced rather than resisted.
Tips & Warnings

• Despite your best efforts, many employees resist change if it means modifications to their
responsibilities or environment. Effective leaders who can model appropriate response to change are
your best weapon against the ramifications of employee resistance.

How to Improve Your Leadership Abilities

Your leadership skills are important in the workplace and other situations. It can take years to become a
great leader, but there are ways to improve your abilities. This article will explain how to improve your
leadership abilities.

Improving Your Leadership Abilities

Step 1

Remain honest when speaking with employees. There will be a higher level of respect for you if you do not
try to lie and deceive your employees.

Step 2

Give unbiased feedback. Keep your personal feelings aside when it comes to feedback and responses in the
workplace.

Step 3

Be open to constructive criticism. If you can dish it out, you should be able to take it as well. Constructive
criticism is a great way to improve yourself.

Step 4

Propose new ideas. If your workplace remains the same for too long, it will be outdated and behind its
competitors. Always think of new ways to improve the work environment .

Step 5

Take responsibility when something happens.

Step 6

Recognize employee accomplishments. Many employees don't get credit for anything that they do. Be the
leader that recognizes and encourages achievements.

Step 7

Be clear when giving directions and instructions. Don't leave room for interpretation. If possible, have two
forms of instruction--such as written and verbal--so that everyone can understand.
Step 8

Monitor and coach employees when needed. Simply share your knowledge when you notice an employee is
in need and offer help to everyone.

Step 9

Stay calm during a crises. Employees normally follow their superiors' reactions. If you're openly panicking
about a situation, your employees will do the same.

Step 10

Practice ethical reasoning when making decisions of all kinds. Ethics are becoming a major issue in the
workplace.

Step 11

Be active in conflict management. When problems arise in the workplace, try to nip it in the bud as soon as
possible.

How to Improve Time Management for

Leadership Success
Do you feel time slipping away and asking yourself what legacy you will leave? There is no time like the
present to make small adjustments that will make a BIG difference in your leadership ability.

Step 1

To improve as a leader and leave a legacy through the life you are given requires making choices. No one
can make the decisions for you. They are yours and you must own them once you make them. First, to lead
well requires being effective at managing your time. A few small adjustments to how you approach your
time, can make a really Big difference in what you are able to accomplish with your time.

Step 2

Now that you have made a choice to change, the next step is to make a list of the typical things that you do
in a day. Next to that, write an estimate of the amount of time you spend doing it.

Step 3

The next step is to evaluate each item listed by asking 4 questions for each item.
1. Is this IMPORTANT and URGENT? This is an area of productivity. These are things high on your "To
Do" list that require responding to pressing problems and are deadline-driven.
2. Is this IMPORTANT but NOT URGENT? This is an area of quality and possibilities. They include long-
term things that relate to life goals and mission. These are things like planning, preparation, prevention,
building relationships, and taking advantage of opportunities.
3. Is this URGENT but NOT IMPORTANT? This area is deceiving to us. They are right in front of us and
appear important, but in reality are important to someone else, not you. They don't make long-term
differences. These are things like phone calls, drop-ins, meetings, some mail, texting, email.
4. Is this NOT URGENT and NOT IMPORTANT? This is an area of wasted time. These are activities that
give a sense of survival or escape. They are things like mindless TV, certain novels, junk mail, and busy
work. Some things fall into this category when we over obsess on perfection, day-dream, or dwell on an
issue.

Step 4

What things are taking up the majority of your time and how important are they to achieving your overall
goals? Ask yourself what you are doing that is important, and what are you doing that is urgent. Often the
urgent takes over and the important gets shoved to the back burner to be done another time or day.

Step 5

It is impossible to slow the sands of time, but what we can do is make choices that make each grain of sand
count for more. Consider how you can eliminate all the things in the third and fourth category by
delegating, deleting or delaying. If you spend most of your time in category one and three, are you an
adrenaline junky? By focusing on the urgent, you will miss the important. Consider how you can spend
more time in category two. This will increase your ability to focus your time and effort on the opportunities
and possibilities that will lead to a more effective life. Be consistent and persistent and you will see results.

Tips & Warnings

• A Life Coach is a great way to work through the process of determining where your time is being
spent and to hold you accountable to the change you desire.

How to Be a Servant Leader

Many people lead from a domineering, and often arrogant "top down" framework because it is traditional,
is the most common, is the easiest, and comes naturally. However, this may not be the most effective form
of leadership in order to produce the best work environment for everyone. It may also not be the most
efficient for making an organization more efficient and furthering the organization's mission, vision, and
core values. A different type of leadership that may be better effective at doing these things is servant
leadership. Servant leadership opposes top-down, autocratic leadership. Servant Leadership emphasizes
trust, empathy, collaboration, and the ethical use of power. At the heart of servant leadership, the individual
leader of an organization is a servant first. He or she makes a conscious decision to lead in order to better
serve others, not to increase his or her own power. The servant leader's objective is to enhance the growth
of individuals in the organization and increase teamwork and personal involvement.

Step 1

The first step to being a servant leader is to choose service over self-interest. True leadership emerges from
those whose primary motivation is a deep desire to help others.

Step 2
Understand that servant leadership is a long-term, transformational approach to work and life. It is in
essence a way of being that has the potential for creating positive change throughout our society.

Step 3

Know and understand the principles of servant leadership and try to incorporate these principles into your
leadership style: transformation as a vehicle for personal and institutional growth; personal growth as a
route to better serve others; enabling environments that empower and encourage service; service as a
fundamental goal; trusting relationships as a basic platform for collaboration and service; creating
commitment as a way to collaborative activity; community building as a way to create environments in
which people can trust each other and work together; nurturing the spirit as a way to provide joy and
fulfillment in meaningful work.

Step 4

Become familiar with and try to emulate and incorporate these characteristics that are central to servant
leadership into your own leadership style: listening, empathy, healing, awareness, persuasion,
conceptualization, foresight, stewardship, commitment to the growth of people, and community building.

Step 5

Know that the ideals of servant leadership can be implemented both at an individual level as a means for
personal growth (such as for professional, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth), and at the
organizational level as a means for a more effective mission, vision, core values, and guiding philosophy,
creating better, more productive and profitable, and more caring companies and institutions.

Step 6

In an organizational setting, a servant leader should do the following: devote themselves to serving the
needs of the organization's members; focus on meeting the needs of those they lead; work with and develop
employees and organizational members to bring out the best in them; coach employees and encourage their
self expression; facilitate personal growth in all organizational members; and listen to what employees and
organizational members have to say in an effort to build a sense of community. By doing these things,
servant leaders are effective by encouraging and facilitating employees and other members of the
organization to reach their full potential, allowing them to perform at their best, which ultimately is better
for the organization.

How to Practice Servant Leadership

Some leaders lead from a domineering, and often arrogant "top down" framework because it is traditional,
is the most common, is the easiest, and comes naturally. However, this may not be the most effective form

efficient for making an organization more efficient and furthering the organization's mission, vision, and
core values. A different type of leadership that may be better effective at doing these things is servant
leadership. Servant leadership opposes top-down, autocratic leadership. A servant leader acts as a steward
to the organization's financial, human, and other resources. Servant Leadership emphasizes trust, empathy,
collaboration, and the ethical use of power. At the heart of servant leadership, the individual leader of an
organization is a servant first. He or she makes a conscious decision to lead in order to better serve others,
not to increase his or her own power. The servant leader's objective is to enhance the growth of individuals
in the organization and increase teamwork and personal involvement.

Step 1

Becoming a servant leader should first involve you making the choice of service over self-interest. True
leadership emerges from those whose primary motivation is a deep desire to help others.

Step 2

You must understand that servant leadership is a transformational, long-term approach to work and life - a
way of being that has the potential for creating positive change throughout our society.

Step 3

Become familiar with the principles of servant leadership and try to incorporate them into your leadership
style as you grow as a leader: transformation as a vehicle for personal and institutional growth; personal
growth as a route to better serve others; enabling environments that empower and encourage service;
service as a fundamental goal; trusting relationships as a basic platform for collaboration and service;
creating commitment as a way to collaborative activity; community building as a way to create
environments in which people can trust each other and work together; nurturing the spirit as a way to
provide joy and fulfillment in meaningful work.

Step 4

Try to emulate and incorporate the following characteristics that are pivotal to servant leadership, merging
them into your own leadership style: empathy, listening, awareness, healing, persuasion, foresight,
stewardship, conceptualization, community building, and commitment to the growth of people.

Step 5

Understand that the ideals of servant leadership can be implemented both at an individual level as a means
for personal growth (such as for professional, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual growth), and at the
organizational level as a means for a more effective mission, vision, core values, and guiding philosophy,
creating better, more productive and profitable, and more caring companies and institutions.

Tips & Warnings

• A servant leader should do the following in an organizational setting: focus on meeting the needs of
those they lead; devote themselves to serving the needs of the organization's members; coach
employees and encourage their self expression; work with and develop employees and
organizational members to bring out the best in them; listen to what employees and organizational
members have to say in an effort to build a sense of community; and facilitate personal growth in all
organizational members. By doing these things, servant leaders and those practicing the tenets of
servant leadership are effective by facilitating and encouraging employees and members of the
organization to reach their fullest and best potential, allowing them to perform at their highest level,
which ultimately is better for the organization as a whole and the organization's interactions with
other people and organizations.

How to Build Leadership Skills
While leadership is easy to explain, it is not necessarily easy to practice. A good leader is built with the
right behavior and relationship mannerisms, and is rated on skills second. They are respected and trusted
because of their integrity, positive attitude, wisdom, determination and commitment. While most leaders
are born with leadership skills , a good manager can build their leadership skills to become an enhanced
leader with great management skills.

Defining Extraordinary Leadership Qualities

Step 1

Know your objectives and have a plan how to achieve them.

Step 2

Build a team committed to achieving the objectives.

Step 3

Help each team member to give their best efforts.

Improving Leadership Skills

Step 1

Build the team's self esteem with sincerity and make your team feel as if they are an important part of the
team.

Step 2

Become a good listener. Always lend an ear by listening with full attention.

Step 3

Effectively plan with strength in decision to reach objectives.

Step 4

Motivate with praise, recognition and by communicating information.

Step 5

Discipline others with privacy and respect. Handle personal problems without getting emotionally or
personally involved.

Step 6
Appoint others who are competent and can enhance your team to reach your objectives. A successful leader
gets things done through others.

Step 7

Empower your team to become leaders among the team. Maintain organization but delegate responsibility
further.

How to Get There

Step 1

To become a better leader, start with yourself and your personal perspectives on your business. Examine its
objectives and how you can be better to lead it.

Step 2

Become educated. Go to leadership building seminars or classes.

Step 3

Take into practice your self observations and the education you have gained.

How to Become a Boss Who People Like

Every job demands some form of leadership, especially when you are the boss of a group of people.
Leadership skills are needed in every type of industry, whether it relates to dealing with co-workers,
customers, vendors or the team you manage. When you demonstrate successful leadership skills, you build
confidence in your peers, your teammates and even your own boss.

Become a Leader

Step 1

Supervise ItIf you have a job where you are directly responsible for the growth and work delegation of
others, you must continually look to improve your management skills . It would not be fair to your
subordinates to fail as a leader. When supervising others, it is important to put yourself in their shoes. This
will help you gain perspective on their problems and successes in and around the office. Being able to
relate through perspective will gain the trust of those you manage. You also must listen. When your
employees come to you with problems, they expect you to listen, take notes and provide well-thought-out
advice to ensure they achieve success.

Step 2

Decisions, Decisions, DecisionsBecoming a strong leader in the workplace will sooner or later require you
to make important decisions. You have the power to decide courses of action and how you grow as an
employee. Some decisions are not easy to make. Decisions also do not always come with a reasonable
timetable. You will be forced to make quick decisions that have big impacts. To make the right decision, it
is important to weigh the level of effort, work and impact. Even if someone needs a nearly immediate
answer, you must always weigh the anticipated results of your decision. When an instant answer is
demanded, most every employer will understand if you simply say, "Can you give me a moment to ensure
that I make the right decision for my team and the business so we can reach our goals?" Your request to
make a careful decision will demonstrate smart and seasoned decision-making skills and qualify you as a
leader.

Step 3

Ambition Leads to Contribution. Too much ambition may make others either perceive you as a "suck-up"
or cause them to be wary that you are trying to make them look bad. This is not a quality that people look
for in a leader or boss. However, using your ambition to grow as an employee through knowledge and
teamwork will lead to greater personal and team contributions. To succeed in any industry, you must
continually learn new skills, programs and abilities. Knowledge is crucial in the ever-changing digital
world. Use your ambition toward learning advanced skills when new applications, theories or technology is
introduced into the company. Once you gain a new ability, share it with the people you directly supervise.
By being a leader to your peers and promoting growth, managers will perceive you as a person who wants
the company and its employees to share in success.

How to Develop Leadership Qualities in You

Leadership qualities are not just something some people are born with and the rest of the world will never
have. Though some amount of innate ability is necessary, the real difference maker is hard personal work.

If you commit to leadership development you will become a better leader, and you will further the
leadership development of those around you.

Step 1

GET ADDICTED TO LEARNING.

Leadership development requires learning new facts, principles, thought processes, and skills. This doesn't
have to be a chore however. The best leadership development occurs when the drive inside the leader helps
them crave learning. Gobble up all the best leadership development material you can find.

Step 2

FOCUS ON RELATIONAL SKILLS FIRST.

Many people think leadership skills are first and foremost about vision or strategy. Leadership
development theory shows however, that the best leaders have incredible interpersonal skills and abilities.
Some leaders make it by running over people. But do you want to be that person?
Learn to listen well, encourage everyone, share much, and inspire constantly. Become the kind of person
people want to follow.

Step 3

FOCUS ON LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT NEXT.

Read leadership development material from the best leaders in the world. Go to your local library or a book
store and read, read, read. While you are reading find an avenue to apply your leadership development to
build your leadership qualities. Even small leadership roles can provide a perfect laboratory for
development.

Step 4

SEEK FEEDBACK FROM FOLLOWERS.

Regularly ask for help, advice, and feedback from those whom you lead. You don't advance in your
leadership development by being arrogant or unreachable. Develop humility and an appreciation for the
honest perspectives of others. Otherwise you will keep leading with blind spots.

Step 5

LEARN TO GIVE BEFORE YOU TAKE.

If you only take from people, use people for your purposes, and toss them away when you are done you
will not be able to develop loyal followers or strong leadership qualities. Learn to give, give, give, and then
when others ask to give in return... take while finding a way to give again.

Step 6

DEVELOP A BURNING VISION AND PURPOSE.

Vision is the key to inspiring leaders charisma. They have a burning vision that is contagious. It is
compelling. Others want to see it happen. It will benefit many, and change the course of lives for the better.

Step 7

HELP OTHERS IN LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT.

One of the best ways to develop leadership qualities is to lead leaders. Start mentoring younger leaders
even if you are still in college or high school. You are not too young to start your leadership development
or theirs. Great leaders often report mentoring others in their teenage years and twenties. Don't wait to start
your leadership development. When you need it most ... it is too late to get it.

How to Develop Leadership Qualities in Others

Leadership qualities are the most valuable commodity any organization has. If you have great leaders, you
will have a great organization. Leadership development, then is crucial to the success of your business,
organization, and community.

Great leaders know that their own leadership qualities are not enough to carry the day. Success requires all
hands on deck working as a team.

Follow these steps to help develop leadership qualities in those around you.

Step 1

CREATE A LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT CULTURE

A culture of leadership development values leadership qualities and desires to help the entire community
improve its leadership. Leadership development has to be woven into every aspect of the organization's life
for it to be a culture of leadership development and growth.

Step 2

REWARD LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT AS SUCCESS

Rewards for results are most often present in the business world, understandably. But one results is often
overlooked...personal growth. Reward leadership development efforts and lessons learned by taking risks.
If you punish risks, you limit success and stunt leadership development.

Step 3

PAY PEOPLE FOR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT

If you preach leadership development as an attempt to create a culture, but expect people to always learn on
their own dime you are fighting an uphill battle. Give people paid time for leadership skills .

Step 4

CREATE REGULAR LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT OPPORTUNITIES

Put leadership development on your personal and organizational calendars. Schedule a regular meeting for
growth and development in leadership qualities. Have leadership skills seminars put on by an expert in the
area. Bring in guest speakers to outline key leadership concepts. Every few years pay a leadership
consultant to analyze the leadership culture.

Step 5

MENTOR PROMISING LEADERS

There is no greater way to promote leadership development than one-on-one mentoring. Leaders cannot be
shrink wrapped and mass produced. Many leadership concepts and principles can be learned by a large
group at once. But the application of leadership concepts requires wisdom, and person by person guidance.
Give promising leaders your time, your energy, your encouragement, and your honesty. It will pay off .

Tips & Warnings

• Choose one to three key mentees for the coming year and focus on them.
• Keep a list of the best leadership material you have read to pass on to others.
• Give books and seminars as gifts to others.
• You will have some mentees who disappoint you, or even break trust. Don't give up on leadership
development because of a few bad apples.
• Don't expect immediate gratification in leadership development. It can take a decade to grow a
leader. How long did it take for you?

How to Start Developing Leadership Skills

Developing leadership skills is not about creating a perception that you're "the one in charge" or "the one
in the leadership position." People who want to lead only for this reason aren't respected in the end.
Becoming a leader means dramatically changing the way you think. Leaders gain respect by providing true
direction that effectively improves situations for everyone else's benefit. These are some steps to help in
developing leadership skills.

Step 1

Practice these behaviors before you are in a leadership position. If you don't do this, you will never achieve
that level of leadership, and if you do happen to find yourself in a leadership role without the benefit of
these qualities you will not last in that role.

Step 2

Think of what you would want in a leader. Perhaps even write some things down -and save that list to refer
to, because it can serve as at least a partial guide after which to model your own behaviors.

Step 3

Place your personal gain last. Would you follow someone who is first and foremost interested in whatever
benefits them the most? Even if you had no choice to follow them, would you ever feel motivated to help
their cause except when you are forced to? Probably not. There are such people in leadership positions but
they don't have the strong support of followers that a good and selfless leader does. A leader is only as
strong as the support that she or he inspires in those who are enlisted to follow.

Step 4

Take the long view and think big picture. Effective leadership skills cannot exist without having a very
broad perspective. Leaders think about consequences and try to consider all of the pieces of the puzzle.
Leaders believe that the small details are important, but they focus on the bigger pieces, such as overall
direction and general goals. In a symphony, the conductor's job is to orchestrate the participation of all the
musicians rather than to take over any particular instrument in an effort to ensure that the instrument is
played correctly. This applies in all walks of life. If you are not yet in a leadership role, practice this
behavior by trying to understand how your own current role fits into the bigger picture -this can help you
begin to take that longer view.

Step 5

Practice loyalty 100% of the time. If you have no choice but to speak critically about someone to another
person, do it constructively and as if the person you are discussing is in the room. Sometimes people will
not like everything you might have to say about them but as long as you are always respectful, you are not
violating their trust. Furthermore, if others see you talking about someone else, in seeing that you do it in a
respectful way, they know that in their own absence you are practicing the same respect toward them.
Remember that backstabbing and insulting comments are a sign of poor leadership.

Step 6

Learn to listen to others without drawing conclusions on the spot. Possessing leadership behaviors means
understanding that you yourself only see things from one viewpoint. This attitude helps you to broaden
your view and consider many different perspectives. Your initial reactions to things may count for
something, but you cannot make a judgment based on any initial reaction. Ask lots of questions and
carefully gather information until the entire picture comes into focus.

Step 7

Lead by example. Act how you want others to act, keep your word about everything as best as you can, and
do your job the way you want other people to do theirs. Don't think leaders can't make mistakes. Leaders
own up to mistakes and learn from them. Don't worry about whether or not others treat you the same way
as you treat them or handle themselves as you handle yourself. These are certainly concerns, but do not
make them the focus. Other people may take some time to come come around themselves (if ever, in some
cases). In the meantime consider the fact that regardless of how others act, if you don't keep promises,
fulfill obligations, admit your errors and try to learn from them, other people will not respect you and rely
on you to be responsible. Without those attributes, you cannot lead people. If people can look to you for
those things, then you are more of a leader.

Step 8

Promote self confidence in others and encourage them. People who want to be leaders only to serve their
own egos do not usually try to make others feel empowered, excited and confident in their own abilities.
This is because when someone wants to lead only to feel good about themselves, they tend to also think
they'll feel better about themselves if the people around them feel smaller. Strong leaders know how to
leverage the power of the many. They don't try to impress everyone by doing everything themselves. You
can better leverage the strength of others by encouraging confidence in them. Remember, your job is to
inspire those around you, not to have people worship you!

Step 9

Be patient and don't expect results immediately or too soon. This applies to your own habits and behaviors,
a situation, and especially the people around you. Part of big picture thinking is recognizing that change
and growth happens very slowly, and also that it must begin somewhere. Begin holding yourself to a higher
standard with the goal of developing stronger, more productive relationships with others but don't expect
your effort to bear mutual results instantly. People need time to see that your efforts are not a "flash in the
pan" or driven by ulterior motives. Keep in mind that many people have had their hopes crushed and their
trust violated many times. They are afraid to make themselves vulnerable to you. When you make initial
gestures to people, intending to give them hope, know that they are then only at the beginning stages of
evaluating what your gesture really means. They are not always ready to match that behavior -it can take
months, and in some heartbreaking cases, you may never get any reciprocation. Developing leadership
skills means building great relationships in small steps with each individual. If others decide to give up on
themselves, that is one thing, but always do your best to remain consistent in your own behavior.

Tips & Warnings

• Treating people respectfully does not mean that you have to be friends with everyone.
• Being kind and fair but courageous and firm at the same time seems very strenuous, but in the long
run it produces better results that make things run more smoothly than the results a person creates
by just "being the nice guy."
How to Gain Leadership Skills
If you ask most people if they are leaders, they would probably say, yes. However, many people believe
they are leaders, but in reality, they are living in a fantasy world. Below are 4 steps to help the want to-be
leader gain leadership skills.

Step 1

* Recruit Knowledgeable People

Are you threatened by people that are more knowledgeable than you are? Well – a leader realizes that
others with a wider information base are assets rather than liabilities. So- although leaders have to make the
final decisions and manage others, a true leader realizes that there are numerous ways to solve a single
problem. Therefore, a leader listens to others, rather than have the attitude, “it is my way or no way.” In
sum, a leader realizes that independent thinking is healthy so long as the person is committed to the
organization’s goals.

Step 2

* Indentify With Others and Help People

Are you interested in employees’ personal growth? Maybe – you are only interested if you personally
benefit. Well- leaders are interested in their employees’ personal lives and long-term goals. A leader knows
that knowing what people are interested in is essential to leading them. Consequently, efforts are taken to
know each person individually. Moreover, a leader makes it a point to listen and make employees feel as if
their views are important.

Step 3

* Guide the Company

Are you interested in only the daily operation of the company? Well-a leader is visionary, looking beyond
the actions of today to the effects on the future. Leading a company into a new dimension is
enthusiastically embraced as an exciting challenge. Enthusiasm, commitment to the long-term vision, and a
willingness to sacrifice if needed, are all exemplified within leaders. Likewise, a good leader motivates
employees, even when completing simple repetitive tasks.

Step 4

* Understand the Importance of Integrity

Do you have integrity when you feel like it? In other words, are you like a thief in the night, trying to get
away with all you can? Well – a leader should have integrity. Integrity should be maintained in a leader’s
public and private life because a leader’s behavior sets the tone for acceptable and unacceptable behavior
within the organization. Now- do you still want to be a leader?

How to Create a Meaningful Legacy

Many people are living busy lives with barely a moment to catch their breath. They are spending time and
energy filling multiple roles. They are mothers, best friends and business women. They are husbands,
CEOs and Little League coaches. With all the hubbub, it may be hard to remember that life isn't about what
you have, but the lives you touch. Follow these steps to create a meaningful legacy.

Step 1

Choose your focus. Only you can decide your life's purpose. Tune into your inner guidance to figure out
your true path. If you want to create a meaningful legacy, then you must learn to trust your own judgment.

Step 2

Follow your passion. Make every day joyful by doing something you love. It doesn't have to be your
vocation, but it is even better if your passion is aligned with your work.

Step 3

Teach by example. The life you live has the potential to be more inspirational to others than anything you
could ever say. This is especially true of those closest to you. Your children will learn from your actions as
will everyone else.

Step 4

Practice random acts of kindness. Let a loved one know how much you appreciate them. Smile at strangers.
Leave money in places for other's to find. Let someone go ahead of you in line. You'd be amazed at how
something truly small can make a big difference in someone's life.

Step 5

Be happy. The world needs more well-adjusted people. Living a joyous, fulfilling life is the best gift you
can give to yourself and everyone else. Happiness is key, if you want to create a meaningful legacy.
