Erik Strom, thedirector of the show, andDaniel Heiss, the producer, believed that he was the bestchoice for the part and would-n’t scare viewers away bybeing too crazy.Likewise, the twelvewomen contestants were se-lected for their diverse andinteresting personalities.“We picked girls thatwould go outside the box…if they had a bad attitude com-ing in, they weren’t chosen,”Strom said. They asked girls the samequestionssuch as‘what isyour idealdate’ and‘how farare youwilling togo to win’and got awide rangeof answers.“Wepicked girlsthat we felt were people thatwe would want to watch on

Senior Spotlight: Samantha Johnson
By Danielle Gilbertson
It could be argued thatsenior communicationmajor Samantha John-son’s highly organizedpersonality, which sherefers to as “OCD,” ledher to hold the most repu-table position with Cable8 Productions. As President and Gen-eral Manager, Johnsonhas consistently been in-volved with the programfor two years. She saidher curiosity for televisionstarted at a young age.“I would sit and watchTV when I was younger andwonder how they didthings,” Johnson said. Her interest in televi-sion and broadcasting iswhat sparked her desire tocome to WSU’s communi-cation program, she said. While moving her stuff in to her dorm room fresh-man year, Johnson spotted aCable 8 flyer on the wall.“The flyer sparked myinterest and sounded likefun,” Johnson said.Johnson began her journey with Cable 8 work-ing on the crew of “GetHooked Up”. It was herethat she received behind thescenes training and learnedhow to use a camera.“My responsibility wasto follow the camera andlearn how to use it.,” shesaid. “As the semester wenton, I learned about the au-dio control and the graphicsmachine as well.”As her sophomore yearapproached, Johnson saidshe felt that she was begin-ning to understand howeverything came togetheron TV.However, it was notuntil her junior year that hercareer with Cable 8 wouldtake a huge leap. That year,Johnson had the opportu-nity to direct

“Once I saw the direc-tors and producers responsi-bilities, it made me want tobranch out and try some-thing new,” Johnson said.It wasn’t long until shewas approached by thepresident of Cable 8 andwas askedto applyfor presi-dent. po-sition.Aftera formalspeechand inter-view,Johnsonwaselected aspresident and general man-ager.Things began to fallinto place as she watchedherself grow from an inex-perienced freshman to ahighly trained professional, she said.Johnson said her broad-casting career will not endwith Cable 8. She sees her-self working with sportsbroadcasting as a technicaldirector for live sportingevents after college,.“Working for collegesports would be my ideal job” Johnson said.Johnson believes thatworking with Cable 8 hasopened up the door to op-portunities that she couldhave never imagined.Cable 8 has contributedto her real world experiencewith broadcasting.“It has created a systemof networks that I hope touse in my near future,” shesaid. As an experienced sen-ior, Johnson wants to leaveher advice to those involvedwith Cable 8 Productionsand potential new members.“Don’t just consideryourpositionas ahobby, but look at it as a job; it isa step-pingstone towhereyouwant togo. Cable 8 can take youplaces,” she said.Johnson urges studentsto get started involved earlybecause you never knowwhere it will take you.“It has opened up op-portunities that I could havenever imagined,” Johnsonsaid.

It’s been a whirlwind of ayear already and there havebeen some notable changes forthe College of Communicationand Cable 8 Productions. We have a new dean, Law-rence Pintak, and he has somegreat things planned for ourCollege and academic pro-grams. He’s already made someinternal changes that have beenvery beneficial for Cable 8.As of Sept. 1, KWSU andKTNW TV have been trans-ferred over to the College of Communication. What does thismean for the students runningCable 8 Productions? Cable 8Productions will now have ac-cess to the cable channel 24/7!They will need to provide pro-gramming for the cable channeleven while they are on break. It’s a terrific opportunity andtremendous responsibility forthis year’s leaders and crewmembers. Can anyone say“automation?”As we look into automation(again!) for the station, we look to our alumni for advice andguidance not only in this area, but in other areas as well. Iheard from the grapevine thatMike Harney is trying to set upa production critique group tohelp our students produce bettershows. Can we get other alumsinvolved with some of our otherareas of Cable 8 such as finance, operations, sales, marketing,PR, Web site development, Webstreaming, etc.?It was great to see some of you for dinner and beverages atSpitfire. Congrats and thank youto Kali Sakai (and newborn on9-09-09!) and Karen Temple-Rich for helping set things upand getting the word out for thedinner. I hope we can all meetagain next year for SeattleWeek.Until then, I hear we mighthave a casual get together forHomecoming. If you are comingto campus, remember to comeby and visit and reminisce aboutthe good ol’ days by watchingFriday afternoon’s newscast(12:15 roll time). It will allcome rushingback to you likePLUGE.
