I think the main theme in Cry, The Beloved Country is perseverance. Even though Kumalo cannot find his son after searching laboriously, he must not give up hope. Perseverance is very important because in order to reach a goal, you must be courageous and stick through until the end. If you don’t, you will not reach many of yours and other peoples’ expectations. Two specific examples are when Kumalo asks Mrs. Mkize where Absalom is and when he asks the owner of the reformatory the same question. I give these two examples because on both occasions Kumalo does not fiind his son or has bad news. Even though he does not find his son, he doesn’t give up. These are examples of perseverance.
HOPE has been represented in many ways and is partly a synonym to perseverance. Hope is a feeling of expectation and desire for a certain thing to happen. One example is when Stephen Kumalo leaves his town for Johannesburg for hope that his son and his sister are alive and well. Another example is when he finds his brother, who gives information on where his brother can be. This raised his hope that he will find his son. Evidently, Absalom is not there. . Hope is very important because it keeps us from being down. It is very important that Kumalo has hope that all will be well.
