 A Whole New Mind
A Whole New Mind
Based upon Dan Pink’s
A Whole New Mind: Why Right-Brainers Will Rule the Future
Presented by Keith Schochhttp://www.squidoo.com/wholenewmind
What’s the Main Message behind the Book?
The global economy has shifted over time from agrarian (farming) to industrialto digital to conceptual, while teaching and learning have
not changed
over thepast several decades in response to that shift.
Whole New Mind
thinkingattempts to arm students with the right-brain skills they'll need to compete in aworld that gets flatter each day.America is being irreversibly changed by three factors:
Abundance
(having everything instantly),
Asia
(outsourcing of more and more jobs), and
Automation
(technological takeover of routine tasks).
This is why left brain thinking is no longer sufficient to succeed.
What is Left Brain Versus Right Brain Thinking?

 A Whole New Mind
In his book, Dan Pink has identified six “senses” which he feels are importantto success in the new conceptual age. Pink feels that these can be skillfullyand systematically strengthened and improved through conscious efforts.
1. Design
It’s no longer enough to create something that is functional; it must also bebeautiful, significant, and emotionally engaging.
Implications for the Classroom:
Incorporate art and design into writing and speaking projects.
Assess not just content, but appearance of student work. Determineuniversal ways to improve student work, and reestablish standards thatstudents must meet.
 Teach visual literacy.
Evaluate the effectiveness of different physical presentations of the samecontent. For example, students can compare a number of book coversproduced for the same novel over time. Which is most effective and why?Students can then use tech applications to create their own book covers.

2. Story
A compelling narrative that transcends simple reasoning will always be morememorable and persuasive. Dry facts devoid of context will be forgotten.
Implications for the Classroom:
Ask for student writing in the narrative voice.
Teach and provide opportunities for speaking skills.
Incorporate storytelling as a part of your curriculum.
Provide students opportunities to both hear and tell stories.

3. Symphony
According to Pink, the greatest demand today is not for analysis butsynthesis. Jobs will belong to those who can combine seemingly unrelatedideas and see the bigger picture. Symphony combines what is good intosomething better.

Implications for the Classroom:
Design classroom projects that integrate multiple disciplines.
Confront students with authentic tasks that require more than one simplecorrect answer.
Have students learn by doing. Instead of providing the objective, havestudents find it for themselves.
Use Web 2.0 tools for digital storytelling and other applications whichrequire a synthesis of applications.
Study the lives and accomplishments of great “whole brain thinkers” likePablo Picasso, Thomas Jefferson, Albert Einstein, Leonardo da Vinci, andLewis Carroll.

4. Empathy
Empathy is the capacity to move beyond logic and understand others throughshared emotions and intuition. Leaders will be those who can forgerelationships.
Implications for the Classroom:
Emphasize reading literature about people from other cultures and socio-economic groups.
Ask students to put themselves “in the shoes” of characters in the stories.Would they make the same choices given the same variables?
Allow students to act out key scenes, or be interviewed as characters fromhistory or literature.
Incorporate paired and group work where students earn both individualand group grades.
Require projects that in some way provide a benefit or service to someoneelse (such as picture books for lower grades).

5. Play
Seriousness has its place, but everyone needs some lightheartedness andlaughter.
Implications for the Classroom:
Teach with games whenever possible. Encourage students to designgames that reinforce learning. Offer occasional opportunities forcompetition in the classroom.
