How Toastmasters Works
At Toastmasters, members learn by speak-ingto groups and working with others ina supportive environment. A typicalToastmasters club is made up of 20 to30 people who meetonce a week forabout an hour. Eachmeeting gives every-one an opportunityto practice:
Conducting meetings.
Members learnhow to plan andconduct meetings.
Giving impromptuspeeches.
Memberspresent one-to two-minuteimpromptuspeeches onassigned topics.
Presenting prepared speeches.
Three or more members presentspeeches based on projects frommanuals in Toastmasters’ provencommunication and/or leadershipprogram. Projects cover topics suchas speech organization, vocal variety,language, gestures and persuasion.
Offering constructive evaluation.
Everyprepared speaker is assigned an eval-uator who points out speech strengthsand offers suggestions for improvement.
 
 The Tools You Use
Upon joining a Toastmasters club, each new member receivesa variety of manuals and resources on how to become a betterspeaker and a more confident leader. Members also have accessto other books and educational resources. They also receive theaward-winning

, a monthly magazine that offersthe latest insights on speaking and leadership techniques.
 Toastmasters and Leadership
Leadership cannot be learned in a day. It takes practice. In Toastmas-ters,members learn leadership skills by organizing and conductingmeetings and by completing projects in the leadership manuals.Projects address such skills as listening, planning, motivation andteam building and give members the opportunity to practice them.Just as Toastmasters members learn to speak by speaking, they learnleadership by leading.
