DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
DEFINTION OF DOMESTIC
VIOLENCE
According to the Domestic Violence Act,
Domestic Violence means any unlawful
act, omission or behavior which results in
death or the direct infliction of physical,
sexual or mental injury to any complainant
by a respondent
It is a situation in which one family member
abuses another physically or
psychologically
DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Acts of Domestic Violence violate a
number of universal human rights
protected by international
instruments and conventions.
Human Rights violation (rights to life,
liberty, freedom of association,
freedom from torture, inhuman and
degrading treatment etc)


DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Sustainable human development
must rest on the conviction that
unless women and men resolve not to
tolerate violence against women in
their homes and communities,
development will not be human and
sustainable.

FORMS OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
Zimbabwe D V Act defines most of the forms

SEXUAL
Harassment, rape, sodomy, attempted rape, marital
rape, sexual, exploitation, child sex abuse and
exploitation, sexual abuse (non-penetrating) forced
prostitution (willing but involuntary), child
prostitution; sex trafficking
PHYSICAL
Spouse beating, assault and other physical violence
EMOTIONAL , VERBAL, PSYCHOLOGICAL
Verbal / emotional abuse, humiliation, discrimination,
denial of opportunities and /or services, spouse
confinement (domestic violence

ECONOMIC
HARMFUL TRADITIONAL
PRACTICES FGM, early or forced
marriage, girl child pledging, forced
widow inheritance, forced virginity
testing, appeasement of avenging
spirits etc
