On the Road
One of the great things about drivingdown out of the mountains in April is that itfeels like going from winter to spring. Thetrees were just beginning to leaf out near ourhouse, but by the time we got to Greenville, almost everything was green. It was sunny and warm, a perfect day fortennis, but considering that we were on a

mission, I didn’t care. There was no time fortennis today. The School of the Arts sits on a hill closeto downtown Greenville, looking down onFalls Park, which got its name from the placewhere the Reedy River falls over a series of bigrocks. Dad loves telling me these little factoidswhenever we go someplace new. There’s a neat suspension bridge thatserves as an overlook, and dozens of walkingpaths you can follow for miles. You can takethem all of the way down to the zoo, whichDad says is not a bad zoo for a city the size ofGreenville, though the one in Columbia isbigger.Mom had packed a picnic lunch. We metLauren after her music theory class, and thenwaited for her friend Kenya, who’s studyingcreative writing. We found a picnic table closeto the falls. You would have thought neithergirl had eaten for days. Now I know whyMom made the chocolate cake and the extracookies for them to have later.
