XMP (eXtensible Metadata Platorm) acilitates embeddingmetadata in fles using a subset o RDF. Most notably XMPsupports embedding metadata in PDF and many image ormats, though it is designed to support nearly any fle type.Creative Commons recommends XMP as the preerred ormator embedded metadata, given its support or numerous fleormats and the balkanized state o embedded metadatastandards. Others are coming to a similar conclusion; Microsothas announced support or XMP in Vista applications

and JonUdell notes “There’s also good support in .NET Framework3.0 or reading and writing XMP metadata.”
2
Note that evenwhen embedded with XMP metadata, Creative Commonsrecommends a licensed document include a visible copyrightnotice. Format-specifc recommendations or visible notices areavailable in the Creative Commons wiki
3
.The Creative Commons licensing process oers a XMP templateas part o the license selection process which may be used tomark fles within XMP-supporting Adobe applications.

XMP defnes a rights management schema

. Creative Commonssets the ollowing properties:
xmpRights:Marked
: Indicates this is a protected resource;False i Public Domain, True otherwise.
xmpRights:WebStatement
: The location o a web pagedescribing the owner and/or rights statement or this resource;or example, http://example.com/pd-metadata.html. CreativeCommons recommends this resource contain embedded,machine-readable metadata.
xmpRights:UsageTerms
: An optional feld describing legalterms o use; Creative Commons recommends that whenpresent this take the orm:
This work is licensed to the publicunder the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/ verify at http://example.com/pdf-metadata.html
(Replace URL ollowing ‘veriy at’ with URL containingmetadata about the XMP-embedded fle; this is typically theURL specifed by
xmpRights:WebStatement
.)We also defne a Creative Commons schema http://creativecommons.org/ns# whose common prefx is cc. Itcurrently has the ollowing properties:
license
: The license URL; or example,http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/.
morePermissions
: A URL where additional permissions(commercial licensing, etc) are available. This URL shouldtypically be exposed in a “clickable” ashion, providingpublishers with an opportunity to drive trafc back to theoriginating site.
attributionURL
: The URL to use when attributing this work.
attributionName
: The creator’s preerred name to use whenattributing this work.
Verifcation Links and XMP
A publisher can add boost confdence in embedded metadata byproviding a veriying web statement. A veriying web statement isa URL which contains metadata with assertions matching thoseembedded in the fle. The dierence is that instead o making theassertions about a URL, the assertions are made in reerence tothe SHA-1 hash o the fle.For example, the example web statement http://example.com/pd-metadata.html would include metadata encoded as RDFa.
<p>The document example.pdf is licensedunder a<a about=”urn:sha1:MSMBC5VEUDLTC26UT5W7GZBAKZHCY2MD” rel=”license” href=”http://creativecommons.org/license/by/3.0/”>Creative Commons Attribution 3.0</a> license.</p>
When processing a fle containing an embedded web statement,an application can retrieve the statement and parse it oradditional metadata. I matching assertions are ound whichapply to the calculated SHA-1 hash o the fle, the application candisplay an indicator noting increased confdence in the metadata. This approach has the added beneft o taking advantage o anexisting mechanism (copyright take-down procedures) in orderto break the confdence in the case o inappropriately licensedmaterial, thereby limiting liability.
