RE: FINES FOR SPEEDING ON RESIDENTIAL ROADS
COUNCILLORS: RICHARD POOTMANS, PETER DEMONG, GIAN-CARLO

WHEREAS the City of Calgary is developing a pedestrian saf ety strategy;
AND WHEREAS the public is becoming increasingly more concerned about pedestrian/
vehicular interaction;
AND WHEREAS the City of Calgary continues to implement traf f ic calming measures to help
reduce vehicle speed in residential areas in an ef f ort to provide saf etyf or pedestrians;
ANDWHEREAS speeding 15km/hr over the speed limit in a residential area is more dangerous
to pedestrians than speeding 15krn/hrover the speed limit on a 100km/hr highway, yet the
f ines are currently the same;
ANDWHEREAS speeding f ines are under the jurisdiction of The Government of Alberta;
ANDWHEREAS speeding f ines are another methodto moderate driver behavior;
NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED that Council request that the Mayor write the Minister of
J ustice and Solicitor General to investigate amending the Traf f ic Saf ety Act to accommodate f or
higher f ines on residential roads of 60km/hr or less inThe Province of Alberta;
AND FURTHER BE IT RESOLVED that Council prepare a resolution f or the Alberta Urban
Municipalities Association (AUMA) Annual General Meetingto this ef f ect this f all.
