Influential People As I Grew Up
I.
Grandfather
A.Values taught: Integrity, intelligence, leadership, loyalty, respect, and determination1.Fact: He taught me to always believe in myself and that hard work leads to success. Healso taught me to be generous and treat people with respect and dignity. I think mygrandfather illustrated determination, intelligence, and leadership. He grew up poorand worked hard to become the executive vice president of a big corporation. Heshowed me that hard work leads to success. Even though he become wealthy, he rarelyspent the money on himself. He used his wealth to help those in need.2.Emotional Appeals: I would say that he appeals to authority because I would alwaysseek his advice before making any big decisions.3.
Mom
B.Values taught: Integrity, loyalty, and respect1.Fact: My mom has a big heart and treats everyone with kindness and respect. She putseveryone else's needs over her own needs.2.Emotional Appeals: I would say tradition and plain folks. She was a stay at home momwho took care of children and always made sure that the whole family was taken careof. She never bought anything for herself.3.

Values: Integrity, Intelligence, Leadership, Loyalty, Respect, DeterminationD.Respect, loyalty, and integrity have been my values since childhood, but intelligence, leadership, and determination were formed through college, my profession, mymarriage, and friendships.1.
Transcending Ideas
III.That everything in print isn't true. When I was younger, I didn't read with a critical eyebut my courses in college taught me how to truly be a critical reader.A.Your future isn't determined by your past. When I was in high school, I believed that Iwasn't meant to go to college because no one from my family has ever attended college. Irealized that anyone can go to college if they have the determination and desire. I wasfortunate to have teachers and a school counselor who believed in me.B.That I need to see situations as opportunities to grow and learn rather than approach themas either good or bad (black and white thinking). I have seen in my lifetime that situationsthat I thought were bad actually provided a chance for me to grow and appreciate what Ihave. For instance, I thought not being able to naturally conceive a child was the worstthing that could happen to me, but the experience improved my relationship with myhusband and lead us to adopt a child.C.
Political Views
IV.On the fence...Universal Healthcare & Illegal Immigration: I am not in 100% agreement ordisagreement. I need to research both topics by reading articles in professional journalsand reading what has been written on websites such asFactcheck.orgthat address the prosand cons of the issue.A.
America's Role
V.Democracy works for America, but not necessarily for other countries. America shouldrespect the beliefs and cultures of other countries instead of pushing our agenda and beliefson them.A.
Hidden View of the World
"Education is the key to success"VI.Hidden Assumptions: That a person can only be successful with a degree. Education canonly be achieved by going to college. I was culturally conditioned to believe this view.A.
