MP among
six charged

HAH ALAM: The Malaysian Anti-
S Corruption Commission went
on a prosecution blitz yesterday,
charging six people, including
a member of Parliament, a former
assemblyman and political aides.
Groups of politicians from Umno
and DAP gathered at the court
complex to show support for those
charged, mainly for false claims and
deception. The “action” started before
noon and ended past 3pm in two
Sessions Courts.
Umno’s Sabak Bernam MP Abdul
Rahman Bakri, 44, faces eight counts
of graft which were allegedly commit-
ted when he was assemblyman for
Sungai Air Tawar early last year. He
pleaded not guilty.
He was charged with submitting
RM80,000 in false claims for events
between Jan 21 and Feb 12 last year
which were never held.
The false claims include prizes and
souvenirs for outstanding students,
the People Friendly programmes,
Maulidur Rasul programmes and a
Kemas family day.
Judge Syafeera Mohd Said set bail
at RM30,000 with one surety and fixed
Dec 14 for mention.
In another court, an aide of Abdul
Rahman, Mohd Rosli Bushra, was
charged with abetting his superior
on the same eight charges. He also
pleaded not guilty. Judge Mat Ghani
Abdullah set bail at RM9,000 and fixed
April 26 to May 7 next year for trial.

edly filed false claims for non-existent
“Mesra Rakyat” functions linked to
Thaipusam and Chinese New Year.
He is accused of making the claims
on March 10 last year at the Hulu Lan-
gat district office with an aide, Firdaus
Abu Zarin by filing false invoices.
Judge Mat Ghani Abdullah granted
bail at RM25,000 and fixed Dec 14 for
mention.

» Wong Chuan How, special
assistant to state executive
councillor Ronnie Liew, was charged
with criminal breach of trust and
sending a false invoice. He claimed
trial to both charges.
The local councillor was alleged to
have falsely claimed RM2,500 through
a forged invoice for car flags to the
Sepang Municipal Council and for
allegedly misappropriating a cheque
for RM5,000 entrusted to him.
The court fixed bail at RM5,000
and set March 29 to April 2 for the
hearing.

KUALA LUMPUR: Health Minister Datuk
Seri Liow Tiong Lai has gone down in
history as MCA’s shortest serving deputy
Wong Chuan How president when the Registrar of Societies
(ROS) yesterday ruled Datuk Seri Dr Chua
Soi Lek as the legitimate No. 2.
Liow, who was appointed by the party
central committee (CC), served only 19
days as deputy president. Unsatisfied with
the ROS’ decision, Liow says he will seek
a court declaration on his status in the
party.
During a five-hour CC meeting chaired
by party president Datuk Seri Ong Tee
Keat, the members accepted the ROS’
decision. Chua was also present at the
meeting which also featured three new CC
members appointed by the president (full
report in page 2).
Ong told a press conference after the
Yahya Sahri meeting that he had received 27 letters
from CC members pledging support for the
party’s Greater Unity Plan forged by Chua
and him.
He also said that he had withdrawn
his earlier requisition for another EGM to
decide if fresh party elections should be
called. On the requisition for an EGM by 16
CC members last Thursday, Ong said party
secretary-general Datuk Wong Foon Meng
was studying the matter as the requisi-
tion was found to have violated the party
constitution.
In PUTRAJAYA, ROS registrar Datuk
Md Alias Kalil said there was no vacancy
for the No. 2 post as the decision on the
Firdaus Abu Zarin resolution of the Oct 10 EGM did not fulfil
the requirement of a two-thirds majority as
provided for under Article 35 of the party
constitution.
Article 35 states that only a two-thirds
majority of the EGM votes can unseat a
party official.
“The letter (sent to MCA yesterday)
confirmed that there had been no vacancy
for the post of deputy president following
the EGM. The post will be vacant only if the
delegates give a two-thirds majority for the
expulsion,” he told Bernama.
