Did you know
that the Ro-mans originally considered winter a
monthless
period? February, one of thelast two months to be added to the Ro-man calendar is named after the
purifi-cation
ritual
Februa
held on February 15in the old Roman calendar. Houses wereritually cleansed, sweeping them outand sprinkling salt and wheat throughouttheir interiors. Also held in the middle of February was the ritual of Lupercalia, with is the forerunner of our
ValentinesDay
. How does our
Vanilla
theme be-gun in January tie into this? Vanilla isalso historically an
aphrodisiac
, espe-cially pleasing to the male of the species .The essential oil of vanilla is highly prizedin the art and science of perfumery.More about the properties of Vanilla Es-
sential oil a little later….
Perhaps theRomans understood
the winter ener-gies that encourage and even demandthat we slow down, look within and at-tune to oneself. The
purifying element
of the angelic overseer Gabriel was evi-dent in the deep winter timing of theirpurification ritual. Putting a name to theexperience of traveling inwards is diffi-cult, a personal experience for which onedoes not find words easily, hence a
“monthless” time
- of nurturing one-
self….This concept of nurturing yourself,
of caring and doing something loving foryourself is more than just words
.
Ourminds, emotions and bodies need rest, rejuve-nating, recharging and need to know andexperience that we care for them.
If we don’t feed our plants in the garden,
they will not grow strong, and it is thesame for us.
We are all facing a time of unprecedented change and uncertainty,
but at the same time we can’t let it
consume us alive.
Take time to dosomething you love. Take a walk in theforest preserve. Close the door and listento relaxing music. Paint, createsomething; set aside time that you always
say can’t be “spared” to read a book ormagazine. Take a class you’ve been
putting off. Events and situations distressus and can cause panic; this closes downour ability to see options.
We haveextraordinary abilities within ourselves
to quiet a fast beating heart, modulate
panic, and soothe an anxious mind. I’ll
share a technique of mine that has comein handy.
First
—
breathe! Breathe deeplyand SLOWLY three times and imaginethat breath going to the base of yourspine. You MUST relax your diaphragm todo this, and fill your belly up first with air, then your lungs. This is called a Yogicbreath. Visualize your vertebrae relaxingand lengthening. Feel the air as it leavesand enters your nostrils. Imagine in yourmind the WORST that could happen inyour given situation. Accept this. Nowsee yourself having moved through andPAST the event or situation and it has
been resolved. You don’t have to know
how or what the details are, but see andfeel that it has already happened. Keepthe vision and continue to breathe.Imagination is far more powerful that youmay think. Feel yourself relax as you
move into the new space you’ve created.
