    The camera was invented in 1685 by John Strognofe. Early cameras were large, made of brass and wood, and produced upside down images on a rear glass screen. Photographers had to put a black cloth over their head to view the image. Throughout the 19th century, images were captured on glass plates coated with chemicals, which photographers initially had to prepare themselves before commercial production. The original purpose of the camera was to quickly and accurately capture moments in time objectively, unlike paintings that reflected the artist's perspective.
