BACK TO THE NATIONAL LEAGUE
After suffering a 3-game sweep at the hands of the Oakland Athletics, the Wash-ington Nationals return to more familiar territory tonight as they take on National League West opponent, the Arizona Diamondbacks...the 2007 First-Year Player Draft will be well represented on Chase Field’s pitching rubber, as Upper Mid-west natives Jordan Zimmermann (2nd round, Auburndale, WI) faces off against Josh Collmenter (15th round, Homer, MI).
WALKING WOUNDED
The Nationals yesterday placed Adam LaRoche on the 15-Day DL (retro to May 10) with a right quad strain and recalled Tyler Moore from Triple-A Syracuse. With the move, 5 of the Nationals 8 position players in their Opening Day Lineup have spent time on the Disabled List so far in 2014.
STATUS CHECK...OFFENSE
Despite significant injuries to WIlson Ramos, Ryan Zimmerman and Bryce Harper, as well as short DL stints from Denard Span and Adam LaRoche, Washington’s offense ranks among National League clubs in batting average (5th, .251), on-base percent-age (5th, .318), slugging percentage (6th, .393) and OPS (4th, .711).In addition, with 147 runs in 37 games, the Nationals’ run production is up 11 per-cent compated to the initial 37 contests of 2013 (131 runs).
K STREET
Nationals pitchers are 3rd in MLB in strikeouts (331), 2nd in K/9.0 (8.99) and are 3rd in the the league strikeout percentage (23.5)...the last DC team to pace MLB in strikeouts: the 1919 AL Nationals (536).
BULLISH ON THE NATIONALS’ ‘PEN
At 2.40 (32 ER/120.0 IP), Matt LeCroy’s bullpen is one of just 3 in MLB to currently sport a sub-2.50 ERA for the season (Giants 2.10, Padres 2.13).
STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Nationals opponents have posted a .518 winning percentage (174-162) through the season’s first 6 weeks.• According to
BaseballReference.com’s
“Simple Rating System,” the Nationals’ schedule has been the 3rd-toughest in MLB this season behind Houston and San Diego.
SCORE 4 = WIN MORE
The Nationals are 15-1 when scoring 4 or more runs and, conversely, just 4-17 when limited to 3 or less runs by opposing pitchers.
SLOW STARTS, FANTASTIC FINISHERS
While the Nationals have run up an 18-run first-inning deficit (17 for, 39 against) this year, Washington has outscored opponents, 67-36, in from the 7th inning on.The Nationals pace MLB with a +31 run differential after the 6th inning (a.k.a. 7th-inning+) with the CWS (+25) ranking 2nd.
DC’S COMEBACK KIDS
Washington’s 10 comeback wins are tied for 3rd in MLB behind only the Brewers (12), Angels (11), Tigers (11) and Pirates (11) ...like the Nationals, the Giants, Mets, Padres, Rockies and White Sox also have 10 come-from-behind wins in 2014.
HOMEGROWN TALENT
11 of the 25 players on Washington’s roster are homegrown talents drafted and developed exclusively by the Nationals: Aaron Barrett, Ian Desmond, Ross Detwiler, Danny Espinosa, Sandy Leon, Tyler Moore, Anthony Rendon, Craig Stammen, Drew Storen, Stephen Strasburg, Jordan Zimmermann.• The Nationals have employed 33 players this season, 16 of whom are home-grown.
MEET MATT WILLIAMS
Matt Williams, 48, was named the 5th field manager of the Nationals on Oct. 31, 2013...the managerial position is the first of his career...joins the Nationals organiza-tion after spending the previous 4 seasons on Kirk Gibson’s coaching staff in ARI...Williams hit .268 (1878-for-7000) with 338 2B, 378 HR, 1218 RBI and 997 runs in 1866 games spanning 17 decorated seasons with ARI (‘98-03), CLE (1997) and SFG (‘87-96)...Williams was a 5-time All-Star (‘90, ‘94-96, ‘99) and a 4-time recipient of the Rawlings Gold Glove (‘91, ‘93-94, ‘97) and Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger (‘90, ‘93-94, ‘97) awards...his 359 career homers as a third baseman ranks 5th on the all-time list (Mike Schmidt 509, Eddie Matthews 486, Chipper Jones 389, Graig Nettles 368). • Williams reached the postseason on 6 occasions, won 3 pennants and claimed a World Championship (2001 Diamondbacks)...in all, played in 51 postseason games/18 World Series contests...sports previous managerial experience gained with the Salt River Rafters (AFL division title, ‘12) and the Double-A Mobile Bay-Bears (skippered final 5 weeks of ‘07 after Brett Butler suffered a mild stroke)...Williams’ baseball DNA traces back to his grandfather, outfielder Bert Griffi th, who was a member of the 1924 World Champion AL Nationals...born in Bishop, CA and a native of Carson City, NV, Williams is an alum of UNLV.

• AGAINST THE D-BACKS:
Is 2-2 with a 2.70 ERA in 4 career starts (all QS) against ARI...in both losses against the D-Backs (Aug. 23, 2011 in DC, May 1, 2012 in DC), did not re-ceive any runs of
offensive support while in the game...last faced ARI on June 26, 2013 in DC and outdueled Wade Miley in Washington’s 3-2 victory...allowed 2 runs on 3 hits and 2 walks...struck out 4...hasn’t pitched at Chase Field since pocketing the win, June 2, 2011 (1 ER/7.0 inn.).
