Ann Arbor, Michigan Ann Arbor is a city in the U.S. state ofMichigan and the county seat of Washt-enaw County. It is the state’s seventhlargest city with a population of 114,024 asof the 2000 Census, of which 36,892 (32%)are university or college students. The city,which is part of the Detroit-Ann Arbor-Flint,MI CSA, is named after the spouses of thecity’s founders and for the stands of trees inthe area.Ann Arbor was founded in January 1824by John Allen and Elisha Rumsey, both ofwhom were land speculators. On May 25,1824, the town plot was registered withWayne County as “Annarbour”. The citybecame the seat of Washtenaw County in1827, and was incorporated as a village in1833. The town became a regional trans-portation hub in 1839 with the arrival of theMichigan Central Railroad, and was char-tered as a city in 1851. During the 1960sand 1970s, the city gained a reputation asa center for liberal politics. During the 20thcentury, the economy of Ann Arbor under-went a gradual shift from a manufacturingbase to a service and technology base,which accelerated in the 1970s and 1980s.Ann Arbor is home to the University ofMichigan, established in 1837. As thedominant institution of higher learning in thecity and one of the top public universitiesin the world, the university provides AnnArbor with a distinct college-town atmo-sphere. The university shapes Ann Arbor’seconomy significantly as it employs about30,000 workers, including about 7,500 inthe medical center. The city’s economyis also centered on high-technology, withseveral companies drawn to the area bythe university’s research and developmentmoney, and by its graduates. On the otherhand, Ann Arbor has increasingly founditself grappling with the effects of sharplyrising land values and gentrification, as wellas urban sprawl stretching far into the outly-ing countryside.Many Ann Arbor cultural attractions andevents are sponsored by the University ofMichigan. Several performing arts groupsand facilities are on the university’s campus,as are museums dedicated to art, archaeol-ogy, and natural history and sciences (seeMuseums at the University of Michigan).Regional and local performing arts groupsnot associated with the university includethe Ann Arbor Civic Theatre; the ArborOpera Theater; the Ann Arbor SymphonyOrchestra; the Ann Arbor Ballet Theater; theAnn Arbor Civic Ballet (established in 1954as Michigan’s first chartered ballet com-pany); and Performance Network, whichoperates a downtown theater frequentlyoffering new or nontraditional plays.The Ann Arbor Hands-On Museum, locatedin a renovated and expanded historic down-town fire station, contains more than 250interactive exhibits featuring science andtechnology. Multiple art galleries exist inthe city, notably in the downtown area andaround the University of Michigan campus.Aside from a large restaurant scene inthe Main Street, South State Street, andSouth University Avenue areas, Ann Arborranks first among U.S. cities in the numberof booksellers and books sold per capita.
