A Renaissance City Plan was conceptualised to
enable Singapore to become a global arts city with
strong inter-cultural bonds and a distinct national
identity. Today, a decade later, there have indeed
been dramatic changes in our skyline and there
is a vast array of arts and cultural activities. This
year, London-based magazine, Monocle, ranks
Singapore as 15th most liveable city in the world.
Singapore is now perceived as exciting, creative,
and buzzing with opportunities for living it up and
creative work.

pioneer of creative arts education in Singapore in 1984.
LASALLE is a specialist tertiary institution leading
contemporary arts education in ne art, design,
media, and performing arts in the Asia Pacic.
The LASALLE name is associated with progress,
quality, and uncompromising standards in creative
arts education. It is a reputation built from a strong
track record of nurturing some of Singapores leading
creative talents, who have formed the backbone of
the creative industries locally and regionally.
Our Purpose, Ambition, Values

study of diverse artistic traditions;
the leading Asian educational institution
for contemporary creativity in the arts;
a highly valued educational resource for
Singapores creative industries;
a major artistic reservoir for local communities;
centred on the student experience.
LASALLE values
the ability of art to communicate
across cultures and geography;
the power of education and research to
enlighten the individual and society;
the preparation of graduates for
sustained employment;
the opportunity to create new art by
transcending traditional subject boundaries;

LASALLE offers a comprehensive range of programmes
specialising in the disciplines of Arts Management,
Design, Fine Arts, Film, Media Arts, Dance, Music, and
Theatre. Students can look forward to graduating with
the award of a Diploma, a Bachelor of Arts (Honours)
or a Master of Arts in their respective specialisations.
Contemporary Focus
With an emphasis on contemporary practice and
research, our teaching philosophy emphasises
idea generation and new interpretations of creative
disciplines. Our students ideas and creativity set them
apart as they emerge as reective practitioners in the
industry.
Research by Practice:
A 21st Century Approach
All research starts with ideas. More than two decades
after its humble beginnings, LASALLE can look back on a
long tradition of practice-led research in art and design.
The impressive list of successful LASALLE alumni,
who were prominently involved in shaping Singapores
arts scene, attest to the institutions strength in
providing an appropriate academic environment for
the creation of novel ideas and new knowledge.
LASALLE values the professional practice of all full-
time and part-time staff as one of its most important
assets. Our unique college environment is formed by
a faculty of Singaporean and international artists and
educators, originating from more than 20 countries
worldwide. Many are renowned experts in their areas
and actively involved in exhibitions, conferences, and
performances. The incorporation of their respective
expertise in course delivery closely relates teaching and
learning to a broad range of theoretical and intellectual
concerns in contemporary art and design practice.
Hence, students are constantly exposed to rst-
hand experience in current research practices,
leading to the acquiring of a wide set of knowledge
and skills by the time they graduate. These skills
enable them to successfully adjust to the multi-
faceted demands of the creative industries.
As a Singaporean institution for tertiary arts
education, positioned at the crossroads of diverse
cultures within a multiethnic society, LASALLE
aims to add a distinctive Singaporean viewpoint
to the ongoing debate on repositioning artistic
practice in a post-industrialised society.

This LASALLE-Goldsmiths partnership is another step
forward. Goldsmiths is one of the top universities in
the world for Arts and Humanities, and LASALLE can
develop its faculty and arts research capabilities through
this partnership with Goldsmiths. The partnership will
enhance the opportunities for our budding arts talents.

In the context of the fast growing economic, political
and cultural importance of Asia, there is a need
to redene formerly familiar notions of East and
West, Tradition and Contemporary, in relation to
artistic practice in the 21st Century. Singapore in
particular, with ambitious plans for its future in a
post-industrialised world, is in a prime position to
take a lead role in this long overdue paradigm shift.
The main focus of LASALLEs Research Committee is to
meet the complex demands for practice-led research
in the context of tertiary arts education, and to identify
areas of research in arts-related content, technology,
and infrastructure, in which LASALLE should engage.
The institutional framework for the facilitation of
research encompasses various approaches, such as
providing continuous support for faculty in their
professional practice, ranging from professional
leave for the realisation of particular projects
to nancial assistance of PhD studies,
allocating of funds for art-related research deemed
to strengthen LASALLEs reputation and recognition
as an arts institution of international standing, and
establishing strong links between tertiary education
and research practice by encouraging research
proposals arising from postgraduate studies.
The essential capacity to collate, communicate, and
disseminate knowledge and expertise to students,
as well as to the wider community in Singapore, will
increasingly be valued in LASALLEs research scheme.
Capitalising on best practices in generating manifold
novel ideas, and on the unique opportunities that
an integrated arts campus can offer, LASALLE
aims to assume a signicant role in Singapore for
practice-led research in visual and performing arts,
as well as in arts education in a global culture.

THE WIN-WIN FACTOR
Where Student Life and Industry
Experience Become One
Beyond just learning how to be the best arts and
creative industry practitioners in your time at LASALLE,
the practical and practice-based pedagogy also
promotes industry collaborations and participation
in competitions on a regional level, thus inculcating
a sense of real-life experience that will hold you
in good stead once you step into the environment
of contributing to the economy at large.
In 2011, LASALLEs winning streak at major
competitions, such as The Crowbar Awards organised
by the Association of Accredited Advertising Agents
of Singapore, and the Singapore International Film
Festivals Silver Screen Awards, was testament to the
Colleges world-class standards in arts education, as
well as the incandescent talent of its student body.
LASALLEs Faculty of Design produces programmes
that are geared towards being intimately relevant
to the advertising, design, and fashion industries of
todays world, which explains why the students are
strongly encouraged to have their works represented
and competing at a diverse range of events, including
Spikes Young Integrated Competition;
Young Guns (Regional/Asia Pacifc);
D&AD Student Awards;
D&AD White Pencil Award;
IDN Design Awards;
Design For Asia Awards;
Furniture Design Awards;
Audi Fashion Festival;
London Graduate Fashion Week.
Meanwhile, Performing Arts students get a chance
to be involved in thought-provoking and text-heavy
theatre pieces that are cerebral and challenging to
both the actors and its audiences, while also literally
kicking up a storm on stage with recitals and concerts,
dance showcases, and musical theatre extravaganzas;
garnering rave reviews for being virtuosic in their
chosen artforms of acting, dance, and music, or
for their versatility as triple-threat performers.
Behind the scenes, Technical and Production
Management students ensure the show goes on
as scheduled, regardless of how many pitfalls
pepper the process along the way; and those
specialising in Theatre+Performance learn the
ner points of becoming the future leaders of the
creative industry, amassing skills in the areas
of directing, playwriting, and dramaturgy.
If the lm and broadcast media are what set your
heart pumping, then the Media Arts Faculty regime
will position your ngers squarely on the pulse of
that industry equipping you with the knowledge
and know-how to handle both short lms and feature
length productions from the opening credits to the
wrap party, as well as helping you to develop networks
by participating in competitions like the Silver Screen
Awards at the Singapore International Film Festival.
You can also choose to specialise in Animation, where
your childhood fantasies of anime creatures come to life,
and youthful obsession with comics can be honed to earn
you a livelihood with the likes of top-lining companies
like Double Negative, Lucaslm, and Sparky Animation.
Pay It Forward
In 2012, students from the Arts Management
Programme conceptualised, organised,
directed, and produced i-AM 2012 Arts Festival,
an annual arts festival for social causes.
Over a period of 10 days, 3 visual art exhibitions,
3 art performances, and 6 outreach programmes were
featured and each of these reached out to society in
unique ways - supporting and educating the public about
issues that range from debilitating diseases such as
Alzheimers to the importance of encouragement and
opportunities that our youths-at-risk currently seek.
Uniquely and Irrepressibly LASALLE

I dont know what safari Florentsya was taking
us on, but I am one hundred percent attending.
Her bare bones collection contained all of the
structure without the meat. Corsets and safari
jackets were stripped down to only the necessary
bits and playfully paired with ribbon skirts and
complemented by black and white tribal prints.
Although Im not sure what tribe she was musing,
I would venture to say that shell have enough
followers after this show to start her own.

The eighth art, lm, resembles so many other arts.
However, it is in itself a unique medium. Film prizes the
collaborative process, and The Puttnam School of Film
sits in a privileged position of being able to tap into the
ecosystem of the various arms of an arts college. Whilst
doing so, the primary focus of the school is to nurture
its students to nd their own voice through the art of
cinematic storytelling.
This programme answers the call of the local and
international lm community, which seeks reective
practitioners empowered by the capacity for creativity
and authenticity. Through practice-based learning,
instilled with critical thinking, you will be inspired to
communicate within a cinematic framework and explore
various narrative environments, such as short and
feature lms, documentaries, mini series, and television
commercials, with an emphasis on professional and
broadcast standards.
While keeping with the current advances in technology,
the school also observes that these are mere tools
in the overall architecture of content. Although new
technologies always have and will continue to have
an impact on the realisation of artistic works, the
programme will emphasise skills and knowledge that
refer to the artistic and conceptual traditions in lm,
especially in the area of storytelling, in all the lm
related disciplines, from screenwriting, directing, and
producing to cinematography, sound, and editing.
Level 1 establishes the groundwork of lmmaking and
presents the theoretical approaches needed for the
study of lm. You will be introduced to the disciplines
of screenwriting, producing, directing, cinematography,
sound recording, sound-designing, and editing. Level 2
develops the practical and academic work begun in the
previous level and takes the collaborative process of lm
practice further, through various exercises and a short
lm project. Central to Level 3 are the complex demands
of professional lmmaking. Work undertaken in the nal
year combines your developed artistic approach and
technical skills, culminating in a Thesis Film where you
specialise in a discipline.
Career Paths: Screenwriter, Producer, Fiction or
Documentary Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Sound
Designer, Production Designer
Teaching Methods: You will have opportunities to

Award: BA(Hons) Musical Theatre
The world of musical theatre is diverse and colourful
with new musical works being brought alive everywhere
by performers, directors, choreographers, designers,
and musicians. As an art form, it attracts an increasingly
sophisticated worldwide viewership. While technical
advances have transformed stage productions into rich
visual spectacles, highly trained and gifted performers
remain integral to the success and growth of the genre.
This programme focuses upon quality training for
gifted young performers from anywhere in the world.
Internationally unique as an Honours degree the rst
of its kind in Asia it is designed to prepare students for
professional careers in musicals, plays, cabaret, lm,
and television. Graduates are employed in the region,
including the West End, and in Europe as well as North

Contemporary musical theatre demands that all
performers can sing, dance, and act with equal skill
a triple threat. This programme trains such future

and create. In addition to classes and workshops,
you are continually involved in realising a variety of

choreographers.
Level 1 sets the foundation for both physical and
intellectual learning. You will integrate technical work
into a performance, through the concepts of individuality
and authenticity. Level 2 builds on acquired skills and
moves to more challenging theory and practice.
You will analyse the external and internal details of
character and build a repertoire suited to your own voice.
Level 3 performance classes are followed by a detailed
rehearsal process to support a rigorous production
programme. A series of lectures provides important
management tools for a future career in the arts.
Career Paths: Musical Theatre Performer, Stage

of theatre and performance. At Level 2, the range
and scope of practice increases along with depth of
selected practices. You will go through workshop and
practical lessons in traditional art forms alongside
techniques of contemporary performance, plus
industrial attachments to a local theatre company, or a
residential artist/group in the college. At Level 3, you
learn about the practical, theoretical, and intellectual
basis for intercultural practices and independent work.
You are also responsible for the submission of a thesis
assignment that critically traces and assesses the nal
year specialist project.

ARTS MANAGEMENT
Duration: 3 Years
Award: BA(Hons) Arts Management
Arts Management is an emerging profession that will
increasingly shape the practice and consumption of the
arts. Singapore, with its burgeoning government-led
arts infrastructure, is the ideal setting for the education
and training of the future arts manager or administrator.
LASALLE Arts Management graduates, informed
by current practice, economics theory, and cultural
understanding, will become leaders in their eld both in
the region and beyond.
The Arts Management programme is both rigorous
and innovative, with a distinctive focus on practice,
research, business, and cultural history. You will
receive comprehensive exposure to art, dance, music,
and theatre, thus gaining the skills to excel as an
arts manager. Ultimately, you will be able to utilise
social responsibility and entrepreneurial strategies
in managing creative output, while merging art with
business and policy know-how.
The programme provides an interdisciplinary curriculum
focused on imparting knowledge and understanding
about the artistic and business environments of
the creative and cultural industries. To this end,
studies will centre around four key clusters: History
and Contextual Studies, Business of the Creative
Enterprise, Professional Practice (Visual and Performing
Arts Management Practice), and Research and
Communications Skills. Emphasis is also placed on
personal motivation and development of character.
Level 1 establishes the programmes methodological
and practical base, presenting the different disciplines
and theoretical approaches needed for the study of
arts management, including the basics of marketing,
nance, and human resource. Level 2 expands on this
knowledge base with studies on aesthetics, art theory,
contemporary critical theory, and analysis. Enterprise
teaching commences with more advanced modules on
leadership, accounting, and artist management, while the
practice-based methodology is further enhanced with the
conceptualising and organising of visual arts exhibitions
and performing arts events under the i-AM Festival the
annual arts festival for social causes. Level 3 continues
your development, translating skills, techniques, and
an understanding of arts management into increasingly
professional terms. A critical element at this level is an
internship with an arts organisation, where you can gain
practical industry experience.
Career Paths: Arts Administrator/Manager
Related Careers: Writer or Critic, Business Development
Manager, Marketing/Public Relations Manager, Assistant
Curator, Exhibition Manager, Event/Festival Producer,
Programming Manager, Sponsorship Manager, Theatre
Manager
Teaching Methods: You will learn through lectures,
workshops, tutorials, seminars, local and overseas
internships, and live projects. There will be regular
guest lectures by industry practitioners and international
visiting professors. You will participate in class
presentations, complete written assignments, and put
together a research project.
The BA(Hons) Arts Management Programme at
LASALLE is unique in my experience. While there
may be similar programs in the eld, it is the only
one I know which is, essentially, a conservatory
program for cultural management. Students
devote their entire three-year study to the theory
and practice of arts administration. The depth
of training available in such a curriculum is not
possible in liberal arts degree programs.

Diploma in Technical and Production Management
Technical and Production Management deals with all
the many and varied backstage roles and careers that
make live performances possible. The people managing
the technical aspects Lights, Sound and Audio-
Visual technology all collaborate with performers,
directors, designers, and composers, all in the same
event together with those who are managing people,
managing time, and managing nances. Such skills are
transferable and can be used in many careers.
This programme seeks imaginative, enthusiastic and
inventive people who love theatre and live performance
- but dont want to be in front of the audience. We
also seek those who love working with all the new
technology, equipment and machinery involved in
making a show from small intimate galleries to huge
colourful productions like The Lion King.
Some of you like to draw, some of you like to write, some
of you prefer to make a sound tape, a power-point or a
collage of images. We want to know your ideas and your
ambitions, what you enjoy in the Performing Arts and
we want to know what areas you are most interested in
exploring. To help us get to know you and your ideas,
you are invited to submit a project that manifests as
many aspects as you wish, related to a story or play that
you know well.
Project:
Choose from either a Folk Story, a Legend or a Fairy
Tale. (for example: Chang Er, Puteri Gunung Ledang
or Cinderella. Something that has a story (the
narrative or plot) some characters (the roles played
by actors), and some meaning (theme or content).
Think about how you would like to see your version of
this on stage, and start to collect some show and tell
items for example, notes, pictures, and music. (For
ideas and examples, please see over page).
Your collection (or portfolio) might be a series of
scrap books, a sketchbook, notes and lists, extracts
from review and articles, power-point presentations,
drawings, paintings, photocopies, newspaper/magazine
tear-sheets, and/or DVD, sound bites, computerised
graphics etc.
Interview:
You might like to prepare some notes for yourself
to read from, or as talking points.
If you have drawings, photos or programmes from
your previous productions do bring these materials
to the interview.
Bring your project to the interview and share all your
ideas with us as if we are producers or sponsors
that you want to persuade to invest money in your
show.
W82302 Size : W176 x H250mm Mac 9 C.Bee 2nd (Section 6)
We will ask you some questions about your project.
We will ask you about your interest in the Technical
and Managerial aspects of Production, and what areas
of work attract you.
You can ask us any questions about the Programme
and its subjects, about the Theatre School, or the
College.
Dont be nervous. We are here to know you better.
Try to enjoy yourself: its fun sharing ideas about theatre.
We might offer you a place immediately. We might ask for
you to prepare more material, or set you a specic task.
Whatever we do, it will be an attempt to understand and
help you.
Ideas and examples of what you might like to include in
your project - the story of your choice:
Draw, paint or collect some images that show the
different settings or scenery perhaps show how
these scenes might appear with different lighting,
with different atmospheres, in daylight or at midnight
whatever the story needs.
Go through the story and make lists of any furniture
and props that the scenes might need then draw or
copy or cut out images of the most important props or
special machinery and special effects.
Consider all the characters in the story and select
some of the most important; then make some notes
about their main qualities, their age, their ambitions,
etc. Draw, collect photographs, cut out magazines, of
what you think the story will look like. Perhaps you
might like also to cast some of these roles with actors
you know.
Think about the meaning of the story. What is the
story about? What message might the story contain?
For example: is it about responsibility to self, to love,
to family, to country? Is Cinderella about rivalry among
sisters? Or is it about goodness being rewarded?
Does your story still have meaning today? Write some
statements about what you would like to convey to an
audience.
If you have a special interest, see the story through
what you love if you love sound effects, what noises
or music can you showcase? Can you surround the
audience with speakers? If you love lighting, then
imagine the colours, moving lights, and special
effects. If you are the Stage Manager imagine
controlling the rehearsal schedules for all the actors,
dancers, singers and costume changes, and calling the
cues and controlling all the effects yourself. You may
want to make all the costumes, or design the sets or
props. You can explore you own passion in this project
and perhaps focus on and feature what you love best.

What will happen on the Interview Day?
When you arrive:
You will be directed to the interview space
and asked to lay out your portfolio.
You will be interviewed by two lecturers from
LASALLE as part of the group interview.
There will be up to seven other candidates in your group.
While the lecturers are assessing your portfolio, you
will be asked to discuss with the other candidates on
the topic: What Does It Mean to be Creative? As a group
you should prepare some ideas for discussion later
on in the interview. You are advised to come prepared
with some ideas on this topic before the interview.
Once the lecturers have assessed the portfolios, all
candidates will be asked to select a piece of artwork from
their own portfolio and talk about it for two minutes.
You are advised to describe the process of creating
this chosen work, its source of inspiration and its
development. Be prepared to answer questions from
your fellow candidates and the interviewing staff.
Once all the candidates have presented their
artwork, the whole group will then discuss the
topic: What Does It Mean to be Creative?
Finally there will be an opportunity for you to ask
questions about LASALLE and the content, learning,
and teaching offered at Foundation Certicate.
