Object of the month for December 2009
Christmas card c.1890
The tradition of sending Christmas cards to friends and family became fashionableduring the reign of Queen Victoria and has survived the internet age to remain apopular way of staying in contact at this festive time. This card from our collection, which is currently not on display, represents the lookand design of some of the earliest cards ever to be sent. Here, a clown holding a large Christmas pudding pops up when the Christmas card isopened.Victorians felt that clown’s added fun, surprise and mischief to many a Christmasscene as they were leading performers in the popular Christmas pantomimes intheatres at the time.
