The ollowing 13 courses are required i you wish to receivea Certiicate in Botanical Art and Illustration. The recom-mended sequence o courses is listed below. This successionis appropriate or both the certiicate and the non-certiicatestudent.
Classes can also be taken in the order determinedby their prerequisites.

Botanical art and illustration is the well-established tradition o portraying plants or scientiic purposes, recording vanishingspecies or historical recollection or rendering the beauty and inspiration we experience in the lora o the world around us.Denver Botanic Gardens’ Certiicate in Botanical Art and Illustration program is designed to teach a comprehensive series oclasses in botanical illustration, oering participants the drawing and painting skills required to render accurate and useuldepictions o the plant world with a ocus on detail. This program is or the dedicated illustrator, as well as the devoted ama-teur. It culminates in a certiicate or some students and oers an ongoing program o botanical classes or others.courses, you must select 100 elective hours. The number oelective classes oered in any one year may vary. Guestinstructor workshops may be taken as electives. 
Please note:
To receive credit or any course, attendance isrequired at the irst class and at 80 percent o all classes.
Science and art lectureS
Selected lectures at Denver Botanic Gardens can qualiy orelective credits. Participation in one lecture gives one elec-tive credit hour; you can receive a maximum o 15 credithours rom these lectures. Caé Botanique by Mervi Hjelm-roos-Koski is a ree lecture series open to Botanical Art andIllustration students, Gardens members, the general public,academia and artists. There is no admission ee and pre-registration is not required. The Caé Botanique schedule isposted on the Botanical Illustration blog.

Move on to composition and learn about traditional and con-temporary botanical styles. See how Ann interprets elements o ar-rangement to push the boundaries in her work. Bring it all together tocompose a botanical piece that will showcase all you’ve learned.

Ann Swan, U.K.Ann Swan is one o the U.K.’s leading contemporary botanicalartists working in colored pencil. Her work has been shownat the Hunt Institute or Botanical Documentation and at theSmithsonian with the Shirley Sherwood Collection, which hasrecently toured the world. She has been awarded our RoyalHorticultural Society Gold Medals and has recently been ap-pointed to the Royal Horticultural Society’s Picture Committee.Her work now eatures on six new ranges o china producedby Jersey Pottery in the U.K. She is an accomplished teacher

Succulent! Capturing Cacti in Colored Pencil
El Charco del Ingenio Botanical Garden,San Miguel de Allende, GTO, Mexico 
The beautiul setting and astounding collection o cacti and succu-lents at El Charco de Ingenio in San Miguel de Allende are youroutdoor classroom. Learn rom a garden expert about the botanicalattributes that make succulents unique in the plant world. Draw andobserve cacti and succulents in the gardens using a variety o tech-niques to record size, orm, color and details. Back in the domedclassroom, hone your skills with lessons that target techniques toportray needles, spines and ridges, as well as the smooth fesh osucculents. Practice your color layering skills to achieve the rangeo greens and undertones oten seen in these plants. Design anddevelop your eld drawings and color studies into a complete por-trait o an individual cactus. Experiment with new techniques andmaterials, and learn rom demonstrations and individual guidanceas you create a botanical plate with international fair.
