Theo van Alkemade

14 August 1926 17 April 2014

A pretty good life

ON APRIL 17, Bacchus Marsh and the wider Moorabool
community lost an extraordinary man with the passing of
Theo van Alkemade, a triple amputee.
At 18-years-old Theo van Alkemade lay in a hospital bed in
a lot of pain, kept alive by a festoon of tubes, covered with
bandages, and wondered what would become of him.
In his own words, 62-years after losing both his legs and
an arm in an accident, Mr van Alkemade said: Well,

everything has turned out pretty well.

In a eulogy for his father, Peter van Alkemade said his
dads accident and subsequent handicap were the things
people focussed on when discussing his fathers many
achievements.
His strength of character not only saw him survive his
horrific injuries but also ensured he would take on life with
an uncommon vigour, Peter said.

In 1944 Theo van Alkemade became a young air cadet

for the Royal Australian Air Force, but on October 23 that
year he was in physical contact with a crane that became
tangled in high tension powerlines.
Peter said 69 years later people still asked how his dad lost
his arm, many not realising hed also lost his lower legs
because hed become so adept at walking on his artificial
limbs. (continued page 12)

Footballer suffers spinal injury

THE reserves football
match between Dunnstown

ended on May 10 when
Dunnstown player Cam

The
20-year-old

during
the
final ten minutes of the
game
by
Dunnstown
and Springbank trainers,
before being transported

Melbourne Hospital.
Dunnstown Football Club
president Mark Mullane
spoke to the Moorabool
News last Thursday with
permission from Cameron
and his mother Sharon.
I saw him last night (May
14). Hes still at the Royal
Melbourne Hospital but
hes improved a bit. Hes out
of his neck brace but theres
still not a lot of feeling in his
legs, Mr Mullane said.
In terms of his spine the
signs are really positive and
they think his body will
heal itself. Hes still in an
awful lot of pain.
Mr Mullane said Cameron
was also suffering from
short-term memory loss

AN alleged child abduction attempt in Ballan on

May 8 has not been linked
to two attempted abductions in Daylesford on the
same day.
The
Bacchus
Marsh
Crimes Investigation Unit
is investigating an incident
in Ballan last Thursday afternoon where a young boy
was allegedly offered a lift
by a male driver unknown
to him.
Earlier that day there were
two attempted abductions
in Daylesford. Investigators
were told a seven-year-old
was exiting a toilet block
at a Vincent Street primary
school when he was approached by a man who
grabbed him by the arm
and attempted to lure him
away. The boy broke free
and raised the alarm. Investigators were also told
the same man approached
a five-year-old girl in the
same school grounds and
tried to convince her to
leave with him. Detectives
from the Ballarat Sexual
Offence and Child Abuse
investigation team are investigating the case.
Anyone with any information about these incidents
is urged to contact Crime
Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Bull urges use of rating

tools for fairness
(L-R) Member for
Western Victoria Simon
Ramsay, Minister for
Local Government Tim
Bull and Moorabool
mayor Paul Tatchell
outside council offices
in Ballan last Monday.
Photo Helen Tatchell

Member for Western Victoria, Simon Ramsay, has

called for a review of council rates, as many councils
look to increase their rates
well above CPI.
Mr Ramsay and the new
Local Government minister, Tim Bull, toured Ballan
on Monday and met with
Moorabool Shire councillors and local farmers.
This was a terrific opportunity for the councils of
Moorabool, Ballarat, Golden Plains and Hepburn to
sit face-to- face with the
minister, Mr Ramsay said.

It was especially opportune with councils currently releasing their draft

budgets for review and public comment. Like many
regional councils, they are
facing increasing stresses
on their finances, some of
which is caused by population growth and dispersal.
During discussions, the
minister urged the councils
to use the rating tools at
their disposal to spread the
rate burden more equitably
across their municipality. Tools like a municipal
charge and differential rating can create fairness, Mr

Ramsay said.
Mr Ramsay said variables
- already available to councils - within the municipal
charge and differential rate
should be used to resolve
inequities.
In
shires
like
Corangamite, for example,
farmers make up only 22
per cent of total ratepayers
in the shire, yet contribute
62 per cent of the shires
rate income. That is why it
is looking to reduce its farm
rate to 90 per cent of its general rate, he said.
I brought farmers and

landholders to meet with

the minister to express their
distress at the substantial
rate increases being proposed by some councils.
Moorabool mayor Paul
Tatchell said the meeting
was basically an introduction to the area.
We talked a lot about
our shire, the peri urban,
changing the parameters
in the differential rate to
make it more flexible to the
agricultural, commercial
and extraction industries,
without burdening the residents, he said.

Luncheon
for mums
By Jane Gardner
The Wallace Kindergarten recently held their Annual
Mothers Day Luncheon, with approximately 100 mothers
and friends attending the event, along with 30 or so
children. This year, the luncheon moved to the recently
refurbished Bungaree Recreation Reserve, where guests
were served a delicious meal and desserts. In-keeping with
tradition, the luncheon included spinning wheel prizes,
lucky door prizes, a silent auction, cake stall and the everpopular guess the number of lollies in the jar competition.
Everyone went home with something. The Mothers Day
Luncheon raised an impressive $6,000, which will go
towards further improvements to the outdoor play area
along with supporting the educational program for the
children who attend the Wallace & District Kindergarten.

Luke: The highlight of my

junior career would be winning a league Best & Fairest. While the highlight of
my senior career would be
playing finals after years of
only winning a game or two
throughout the season.

The
23-year-old
twin
brothers, who have come
through the Clubs Junior
program (five years) since
under 15s, said despite numerous offers to play elsewhere, they have made too
many good friendships at
Gordon to be interested in
playing for another club.

Moorabool News: Who has

been your influence?
Mark: Mostly family members and close friends as
well as the good support
from the Gordon club,
especially when we were
struggling a few years back

With their close friends,

along side Mum, Dad and
members of the club being the biggest influence
throughout their football
career, the boys are committed to their team.

Luke: Mum and Dad of

course, Dad would always
say I played alright even
if I had a bad day. All the
coaches weve had have
been very helpful along the
way

Upon celebrating their

100th game, the boys answered a few questions
about their careers, their
future and their relationship on the field.

Moorabool News: Do you

compete against each other
for the most stats?

Moorabool News: What are

the highlights of your junior
and senior careers?

Mark: Not really but I like

to let him know if I get in the
best before him.

Mark: My junior career

highlight would have to be
playing in the grand final
against Bungaree after finishing fifth on the ladder,
but we lost unfortunately
by nine points.

Luke: Nah not really, but

if we kicked a goal or took
a good grab wed always let
each other know.
Moorabool News: What is
the best thing about playing
with each other?

Mark: Knowing how he

plays, so it makes it easier to
kick to him.
Luke: Having someone to
yell at.
Moorabool News: What is
the worst?
Mark: When people think
were the same player.
Luke: Not sure.
Moorabool News: Who do
you like playing with?
Mark: I like playing with
all the boys at Gordon because we all get along well.
Luke: I enjoy playing with
all the boys, but the blokes
that we played juniors with
and still playing with now is
pretty cool.
Moorabool News: What is
the future for the Gunnell
boys, 200 games?
Mark: Id love to play 200
games for the club, if I can
get through the next 100 injury free!
Luke: Yeah if I can manage to hold off any injuries
I dont see why not
Moorabool News: What do
you want out of football?
Mark: The one thing Id
want out of football would
be to win a premiership at
Gordon.
Luke: Just to have a good
time and hopefully win a
flag one day that would be
the ultimate goal.

Pursuit ends in paddock

A CAR pursuit from Gordon to Mt Wallace has resulted in one man held in
custody and another man
yet to be apprehended.
On Monday, May 12 at
8.45am a silver Subaru station wagon left the Ballan
BP westbound service station without paying for fuel.
The car was spotted in
Gordon approximately 15
minutes later and when approached by police the two
occupants sped away in the
vehicle.
Leading Senior Consta-

ble David Young said he

pursued the car along the
Old Melbourne Rd to the
Ballan-Geelong Rd intersection, where the vehicle
turned right.
They got to Mt Wallace but
lost control on a bend and
ended up in a paddock. The
two male occupants started
running, LSC Young said.
Shortly after the passenger of the vehicle was apprehended and taken back
to the Bacchus Marsh Police
Station and interviewed.
The driver evaded cap-

ture on foot and couldnt be

apprehended by the police
air wing or dog squad. We
still havent found him and
are following up any leads.
He said the passenger was
a male in his 30s from Norlane and the car had been
stolen from Bell Post Hill,
both suburbs of Geelong.
A large amount of stolen
goods were recovered from
the car.
Anyone who may have information is urged to contact Crimestoppers on 1800
333 000 or Gordon Police on

MORE than 100 locals are

now proud shareholders in
the Bacchus Marsh Community Bank Branch.
Mother of three Carla said
she jumped at the chance
to buy her shares because
she was inspired to be part
of a grassroots initiative
that would help build a
stronger community for her
children.
I want to be part of a
bank that does something
positive for our community
and invests in our future
generations, rather than
just thinking about its own
prosperity, she said.
Having children who will
grow up in Bacchus Marsh,
I want them to be proud of
their community and what
it can achieve.
We will reap the benefits
of what our Community
Bank Branch will put back
into the community and
I am proud to know that

my small contribution as a
shareholder will help make
that happen.
She called on other parents, as well as the wider
Bacchus Marsh community, to get behind the project
and buy shares, before all
the remaining shares were
snapped up.
More than $400,000 in
Community Bank shareholdings have been bought
in the first four months of
the share offer campaign.
Bacchus Marsh Community Bank chairperson Claire
Sutherland said the local
committee was committed
to raising the share capital
as soon as possible.
Our new shareholders
include mums and dads,
retirees, local business people, shop owners and traders and in fact anyone who
has an interest in ensuring
that Bacchus Marsh has a
stream of community in-

come well into the future,

Mrs Sutherland said.
It is critical we get the full
support of our community
in becoming shareholders and ultimately customers in this truly local
enterprise.
A further 415,000 shares, at
$1 each, must be purchased
by locals by the end of June
to ensure the opening of
Bacchus Marsh Community Bank Branch of Bendigo
Bank in early August this
year.
Negotiations have been
completed on the branch
location, with work to start
on the Main St site once
the minimum number of
shares is reached.

Barnett on 0408 671 055 or

Grants to educate
and return favours
MORE than $82,000 was given
to community groups in the
Moorabool Shire Councils Summer 2014 round of community
grants.
A total of $84,000 was available
for allocation in the summer
round, as opposed to the usual
$70,000, because of under expenditure in the winter 2013 round of
grants.
Three groups were successful in
the community event category,
six groups in the community
arts category and 17 groups in
the community strengthening
category.
Community Strengthening
Grant:
THE Bacchus Marsh Blue Light
Youth Group will have a more
comfortable space to plan FREEZA and Blue Light events thanks
to its grant.
The group received a community strengthening grant for
$4,843 in the latest community
grants from the Moorabool Shire
Council.
Bacchus Marsh Police youth resources officer Jim Ross said the
grant would be used to carpet
the Merrimu Centre community
room the Blue Light Youth Group
used for planning.
The Merrimu Centre lets us
use the room without paying any

something back, Senior Constable Ross said.
The room is also used for the
family drug support group so it
will benefit all of us.
He said the youth group was
busy planning the next Blue Light
event which would take place on
July 4.
Arts grants:
MYRNIONG Primary School
is setting sail after receiving a
$3,000 community arts grant.
The school will use the grant
to build an addition to its playground: a wooden structure
loosely based on a tall ship.
Parent helper and grant coordinator Helen Cooper said the
MPS Endeavour would be built
on sand so it looked like it was
shipwrecked.
It will be used for play and staging school productions and reenactments of the First Fleet, Ms
Cooper said.
For the first three years of
education at Myrniong Primary
School we use a play based approach to learning, so this will fit
in very well.
She said they would now modify
their plans to fit in with the funding they were given and she hoped
building would commence within the next two months.

resting place at the reservoir. Photos - submitted

Its not often that an entire Avenue of

Honour is stolen.
But, in 1967, exactly that happened to the
small town of Coimadai.
In 1918 residents of Coimadai came
together to plant a collection of trees to
commemorate the 112 men and women
from the district who had volunteered to
serve in the Great War.
Individual name plaques were attached to
each tree guard but by 1967 only 30 or so
remained.
Then, when Merrimu Reservoir was
constructed in 1967, the original avenue was
cut down and replaced on the CoimadaiDiggers Rest Road. Shortly after, the newly
planted pine trees were stolen.
Now the hunt is on to identify the service
men and women whose plaques were stolen
or lost more than 40 years ago.
The Coimadai Avenue of Honour
Restoration Association has been searching
high and low to identify the missing
volunteers, to find out their history, their
war service and even their photographs so
that they can be included at a new memorial
park at Merrimu Reservoir.
On April 19 the Coimadai Cairn was
moved from Coimadai-Diggers Rest Road
to Merrimu Reservoir. The association have
been allocated 1,300sqm of land in this area
for a memorial park.
Coimadai Avenue of Honour Restoration
Association chairman Ken McDonald said
it was a great credit to Coimadai that such
a small locality could provide so many
volunteers.
He said the main tasks for association
members for 2014 would be to research the
volunteers and raise money for the projects
planned for this and later years.
For more information or to help identify
the missing volunteers, call Ken McDonald
on 0408 327 884.

He gets knocked down, but he gets up again

SIX weeks after suffering a broken pelvis, 18 year old
Matt Barton has flown out to Malaysia to ride with
the PMU Thunder Asia Team in the Malaysian Super
Series motorbike racing championship.
A brake failure during the warm-up in round 1 of
the Australian Moto3 Championship in Brisbane
this year saw the Ballan man crash into a wall at
180km/hr, knocking him unconscious, breaking his
pelvis and destroying his bike.
I was really disappointed as we had had such a
good start to the weekend, with two second places
and leading the round on points going into the final
day of racing, he said.
Im also really disappointed as this means the bike
will not be ready to ship out for Round 1 in Malaysia.
So the hopes of a good result in the season over there
are shot as well.
On explaining the situation to a contact in Malaysia,
Barton was then offered a ride with the PMU Thunder Matt Barton at full throttle. Photo Courtesy Deus Images
Asia Team aboard their Honda NSF Moto3 machine.
The second problem was Matts fitness. After
sustaining such a serious injury it would be a high
expectation to race six weeks after the horrific
accident.
Im really humble to be offered a ride with such
a professional team and I look forward to working
with such a well regarded unit, Barton said.
Straight away after the injury my trainers and
physios and I have been working really hard to not
only maintain my level of fitness but to promote
the recovery so I can get back on the bike as soon as
possible. For me to be in a position to ride is a real
credit to Heidelberg Physiotherapy and the team at
Bulleen Health and fitness.
Im actually feeling really confident coming
into the event so it should be a lot fun and a great
experience

Colourful fun run

BALLAN District Health

and Care will use a community event grant to colour your world and get people active.
The $3000 Moorabool
Shire community grant will
be used to organise an inaugural Ballan Colour Fun
Run and Walk in October
or November. Participants
will start off with a white
shirt and throughout the
walk and run theyll be
colour bombed at different stages until they come
out the other side like a tiedyed hippy.
Organiser Triss OKeefe
said last year Ballan District
Health and Care cared for
more than 40,000 individuals and the western region
of Victoria was identified
as having an above average
rate of chronic diseases,

which was the premise behind the new event.

She said the colour fun run
and walk aimed to promote
a new health and fitness
event for the region which
encouraged all age groups
to get out and have fun with
family and friends.
This is an innovative
event, designed to appeal
and attract a wide cross
section of the community.
Traditionally,
sporting
events target those who are
already fit. This event will
be designed to attract novices and those who would
like to start getting fit, she
said.
Its a great community

exercise,
where all walks of life get
an opportunity to come
together.

Theo van Alkemade was a founding member

of the Victorian Veteran Car Club in 1954 and

In 1955 he won an appeal in the Bacchus

In 1978 he was a Bacchus Marsh Shire president.
Never losing his passion for flying, he also served
as president of the Lethbridge Ultralight Flying

promising his wife Margaret that he wouldnt
start until after their fourth child was born.
He was also a member of the Forge book barn and

Because high in the sky is where your mind always soared

I remember you explaining a long time ago
The way each shaped cloud produced the right lift
As you spoke you looked peaceful I saw your inner glow.
But in the meantime you had so much to do
Your mind never rested, always looking for ways
To do things better, ticking over, calculating
There really would never, ever be enough days.
You built, you invented, you designed and you thought
Yes, so many opinions, all fervently declared
You adventured, were elected, built businesses
And raised a family, four of us reared.
Dad, you were never one to be disabled
And passionately you also fought for your rights
You never accepted it couldnt be done
And for others too, you never backed off from a fight
There are so many things youve done in your life
That most people who know you have no clue
And despite your own trumpet blowing at times
In the strangest way you were quite humble too.
Somewhere above those clouds you loved well
As those gates are preparing to accept you
Vivid in my mind is you with your own wings
A toolbox, HB pencil, and a list of things to do.

Whopper of an apple

By Jessica Howard
Whats round, red and
weighs 780 grams? Jeff
Jones giant apple!
The piece of fruit was
found on one of the heritage
trees at the Jones Plant and
Produce store in Bacchus
Marsh, after this years fantastic apple season.
We think it is a Coxs Orange Pippin gone mad, Mr
Jones said.
After a bit of an ordinary
last season due to sunburnt
fruit, the Jones said they
are very happy with the resurgence of interest in apples from tourists.
A lot of people have come
in to have a look and take
photos. We will have it on

view in the store until it

goes off, Mr Jones said.
With only three or four of
the old English trees growing at their roadside stall,
it is believed that the tree
was simply laid down at the
right time, allowing for the
over-sized piece of fruit to
grow.
Nothing has changed by
way of fertiliser and water,
its just a bit of a freak, he
said.
This years varieties of
apples are all really great,
we just finished picking the
pink ladies which are very
nice to eat as they are very
mature, Mr Jones said.
Jeff and his wife, Glenda
have been growing fruit
and vegetables for 40 years.

Dear Editor,
I write in response to the
DEPI article published
in the Moorabool News
22 April, 2014, about the
Blackwood Crown Reserves
Committee
of
Management.
Last year DEPI overturned
the results of a well-attended Blackwood community
election for our Crown Reserves Committee of Management. This is the group
of volunteers who have for
decades managed our Mineral Springs, Caravan Park,
Mechanics Hall and sports
ground.

To date, and after many

requests, there has been
no real explanation for this
extraordinary intervention.
The nine nominees elected
in the traditional process
were denied office by a department which then went
about its own improved
selection process. Now,
after a full eight months,
DEPI has announced the
results- the appointment
of mere three committee
members. Purely on numbers, this process has to be
seen as an abject failure. As
an exercise in community
co-operation and trust, the
outcome is even worse. In
this article, DEPI invites the
community to again raise
its hand to bolster numbers
on the committee. Are you
serious?

Personally I have never
heard such rot.
As a mother and grandmother who had children
travel by bus to secondary
college in Ballarat for many
years, I never once heard
them complain about the
travel. It was just part and
parcel of their daily routine.
Not one of them was ever
disconnected from their
town community. In fact
they had the best of both
worlds, friends and social
activities at school in Ballarat and friends and social
activities at home in Ballan. Travelling on the bus
was half the fun of going to
school.

Renewable energy is the future of our generations

As this is an environmental opinion piece I will
examine a small, minor
incident within the larger
story of the recent federal
budget. Small incident it
might be, but with rather
big consequences, or so this
writer thinks. One of the
key messages coming from
the Federal Treasurer leading up to, and included in
his delivery of the Budget
last Tuesday night, was his
insistence that we need to
act now for the sake of the
future generations. And
then he closes the Australian Renewable Energy Association (ARENA). ARENA
is one of the key bodies that
had received all party support to act for the sake of
future generations.
Under the previously existing Renewable Energy
Target (RET) 2 million solar
panels were put on Australian roofs, creating over
24,000 jobs and bringing
$18 billion investment to

our country.
In case you are not aware

part of Australias response

Warburton to lead a review
into the Renewable Energy
Target, precipitating significant fall in renewable
energy markets.
May 13 2014 Budget removes Australian Renewable Energy Association
Less than 18 months ago
the
apolitical
Climate
Change Authority conducted a review of RET lead
by former head of the Reserve Bank, Bernie Fraser
who recommended that
Australia stay the course
on renewable energy. The

review showed that the target is doing what was it was

designed to do - help Australians reap the benefits
of generating energy from
clean safe sources at a very
affordable price. Even before Tuesday nights budget,
because of the threat to the
RET, there had been a significant drop in renewable
energy certificate prices
and many similar projects.
So what will this demolition of RET mean? Modelling released recently by
the REC Agents Association (RAA) and Greenbank
Environmental shows that
the solar PV industry now
employs 12,300 Australians across 4,300 small and
medium-sized businesses.
According to the RAA, if the
RET is abolished: 2,000 solar PV jobs will be lost in the
short term, by 2018 6,750 direct and indirect solar jobs
will go and the industry
would contract by an additional 30% with many solar

hot water and PV retailers

and installation companies
to close their doors. This is
not to mention the impact
on the wind generation
industry. If the RET had remained unchanged an additional 8,000 solar PV jobs
were expected to be created
by 2018.
So with a range of benefits
to consumers, communities and the economy, why
are renewables now under
attack? And why demolish
the RET, among many other
environment government
bodies?
It seems the growth of renewable energy, coupled
with falling electricity demand, is beginning to hit
the bottom line of many
fossil fuel generators. Intense lobbying is trying to
shift the playing field back
towards polluters. If the
government truly wanted
to support Australian families to take back control of
their power bills, it would

have accepted the findings

of the first report and got
on with helping Australian
families install solar.
Might I suggest you write
to your local member, the
Treasurer, the Prime Minister, the Minister for the
Environment
(against
is the more appropriate
term) and inform them
that; 1. now is not the time
to break the 14 year multiparty support of renewable
energy, 2. a demolished
RET threatens the fledgling
community energy sector.
(Such projects provide opportunities for all Australians to take a part in our
energy transition, create local jobs and strengthen our
communities.)
What is your opinion?
Next MEG meeting: Thursday 29th May - Meeting and
AGM, Ballan Community
House 134 Inglis St Ballan.

Yendon honours more soldiers

DIRECT descendents of Yendon soldiers
who served in the Great War laid a wreath at
a new honour board which celebrated their
ancestors lives at a Yendon commemoration
last month.
On April 27 up to 400 people flocked to Yendon
for a re-dedication of the Avenue of Honour
and the unveiling of a new honour board.
Yendon History Group committee member
and event organiser Kay Paton said the
turnout was bigger than expected. We had
high school boys carrying flags from the
recreation reserve to the Avenue of Honour
and primary school students were involved in
unveiling the plaques.
Mrs Paton said 60 names were on the honour
board and 16 plaques for those servicemen
who never returned were placed along the
Avenue of Honour.
We received funding for the avenue itself
from an ANZAC centenary grant. We used that
money to buy plaques to go on the trees and
to buy the honour board. New oak trees were
donated by the Moorabool Shire Council, she
said.
Ms Paton said the $7,700 grant was also used
to print 100 copies of Yendons World War 1
Memorial Book. The book was so popular they
had to print another 50 copies.
We chose to have these celebrations this year
so that anybody who is looking for evidence
of their families and their involvement in the
war know there is somewhere to go to learn
about them, she said.
Their Yendon ancestors are written up on
the honour board.

Talking the property talk

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV
Most of us dream of having
our own home and for some
already on the property ladder work and life changes
will most likely involve
buying and selling more
properties a bigger home,
a smaller home, a home in a
different city, for example.
But this can be a confusing experience, because
for those not involved in
the property market day to
day some of the information available can seem like
a foreign language even
property
advertisements
and sale boards are filled
with abbreviations. Do you
know what BIRs, OFPs, OSP,
SF and BRs are? If not, ask
a friend in the know or the
agent advertising the property to help you decipher it.
Make a list of abbreviations and their meanings so
that next time you encounter them they wont pose
a problem. (If you want
to start with those above,
they are built-in robes,
open fireplaces, offstreet
parking, single fronted and
bedrooms).
Another to watch for in advertisements is STCA. This
means subject to council
approval for example,
extend or redevelop STCA.
This means the local council would have to approve
your plans and you cannot be sure that this will
happen, so be wary of buying a property assuming
you will be able to do anything that needs council
approval. Check with the
council first.
There are many tools
to help in your property
search. Following auction
results in the newspaper,
on the REIV website or by

signing up to soldtoday.
com.au for auction results
in suburbs where you hope
to buy is valuable this lets
you know what properties
in the area are selling for.
But results also have their
own language: PI, SB, VB,
PS, SO. Thats passed in
(bids not high enough to
reach the reserve price),
sold before (the owners received a good offer so sold
before the auction), vendor
bid (a bid made by the agent
on behalf of the vendor to
get the auction under way).
PS means private sale, rather than a sale by auction,
and SO is, of course, sold,
which is what every vendor
hopes for.
Another useful tool is median prices. REIV analyses thousands of property
sales throughout the state
to calculate median prices
for towns and cities every
three months. A median
price is the middle price in
a series of sales, where half
the sales are of lower value
and half are of a higher value. For example, if 15 sales
are recorded in a suburb
and arranged in order from
lowest to highest value, the
eighth sale price is the median price.
Median prices are used
rather than average prices
because median prices are
less affected by a few unusually high or low prices,
making them a more accurate indicator of true market activity. But remember
that location and house
quality will determine the
price of your home.
Learning the property jargon takes time, so dont be
embarrassed to ask questions. As an educated buyer
you will be more likely to
make the right decision.

You enjoy a good argument, a good challenge and a good

your enjoyment of good people and good friends.
Sometimes you are a little too casual and a little too
absorbed in your own enthusiasms but you are always
well meaning and always prepared to forgive and forget.

v Mt Clear
Football
It was a hard day at the office for the U10 Reserves
this week. Mt Clear was
hard at the ball and the
player, and this showed
across the ground and
around goals. The unrelenting pressure rattled the
local team and as a result
basic errors, like
manning up and pressuring the
opponent, hurt the team
across the ground. Awards
- B. Wilson, A. Harman, E.
Cook, A. Blain.
The U10 Senior footballers
showed some good passages of play and worked
together really well as a
team. Awards - L. OKeefe,
C. Shannon, J. Wood, C.
Benton, L. Meech, G. Muir.
The U12 Reserve team
were involved in the tightest defensive game seen
this year across all ages
of both codes. With both
teams backlines working
overtime the ball rebounded from end to end of the
ground, hardly troubling
the scoreboard. Bacchus
Marsh 1.1.7 def Mt Clear
1.0.6.
In another tight tussle,
however higher scoring,
the U12 Senior footballers
were outplayed by a faster
running team. The Cobras
inaccuracy in front of goal
was also costly. They finished the match narrowly
behind. Bacchus Marsh
6.14.50 def by Mt Clear
8.4.52.
The U14 Reserve football
team got away to an early
lead at the conclusion of
the first quarter, however
at the half time break there
was only one goal separating the two teams. Keeping
the Mt Clear side goalless in
the third term the Cobras
stretched their lead slightly,
however this lead was again
pegged back in the last
quarter with the end result
a five point victory. Bacchus
Marsh 6.6.42 def Mt Clear
5.7.37;
In a fiery clash the U14
Senior Cobra team were
totally outplayed in the first
term. After an emotional
quarter time address, by
Coach Peter Dickson, the
Cobra boys came out a different side. The remainder
of the game Mt Clear did
not score, whilst the Cobras
kept the scoreboard tick-

The U16 Reserve team have
again chalked up another
victory, remaining undefeated this season thus far.
After controlling the game
by halftime it was only
turnovers and poor kicking in front of goal which
prevented a huge blowout.

with a solid performance.

In the first round of the
year for the Cobras Youth
Girl team, the girls turned
on a corker of a game
against a quality Gisborne
opponent. An excellent display of football from both
teams, with good umpiring and good behaviour.
The teams seven goals
were shared amongst six
goal kickers, displaying the
team mentality across the
ground. Bacchus Marsh

The U13 senior girls were
involved in a scrappy game
this week. The team worked
their way through the ugly
match with good skill at
times, coming away with
the win. Bacchus Marsh 29
def Mt Clear 11; Awards - C.

The U15 Reserve netball
girls put into practice all
the skills they had been
working on at training today. Good strong leads, accurate passing and shooting resulted in a great win.
Bacchus Marsh 39 def Mt

The U15 Senior girls match
was very close defensively
as well as in attack. The Cobra girls ran away with the
match in the last quarter
posting a good win. Bacchus Marsh 25 def Mt Clear
13; Awards - C. Murray, M.

The U17 Reserve netballers started really slowly
this week. However, once
the girls switched on and
focussed on their tasks they
were clear winners across
the court. Bacchus Marsh

- Z. Lehuray, O. Piggott, E.

In a tough physical game,
the U17 Seniors tried their
hearts out. In the end it was
the accuracy of the Mt Clear

losing. Bacchus Marsh 19

Seniors
The Creswick Saints have
had the measure on the
Blues in the last couple
of seasons and they were
certainly not to be underestimated on their home
ground. The Wickers kicked
three early goals and the
signs looked ominous. In
the second quarter the
Blues pegged back that lead
and went in at the main
break with scores level.
Mark Williams went into
the centre and had the desired result after half time
and in the third quarter the
Blues drew well away from
their opponents. The backline lead by Jake Wilkinson
and Ben Fenwick did an
outstanding job. Zac Graham also put in a solid performance on the wing and
relished the big Creswick
oval.
Final Score - Ballan 17 11
113 def Creswick 9 3 57
The Reserves were still
reminiscing on last weeks
win and opened very
slowly. They lacked the
desire and system of the
prior week and it certainly
showed on the scoreboard.
The Reserves remain undefeated but will want to be
on their best for their next
match. Billy Smith was a
tireless worker in the middle and Pike was unstoppable in the ruck. Bernie
Whelan had a quiet day up
forward with only six goals
well down from his 20 goal
haul in the prior week. Sam
Sims was ever reliable in
the backline but the Blues
got a good wake up call.

the Wickers had runners all
over the ground. The Blues
line up missed Austin Bongart up forward and should
have a full list for their next
match.
Final Score - Ballan 3 2
20 lost Creswick 17 9 111
The Under 14.5s went into
the game against the ladder leader with high hopes.
The Wickers got the jump
on the Blues and they had
several bigger key position
players that dominated the
game. The Blues smaller
band of runners had plenty
of the ball but had trouble converting once in the
50m arc. Travis Meyer and
Ryan Bongart had plenty of
the action all day and did
a great job but the Wickers
backline made life difficult.
Final Score - Ballan 2 6 18
lost Creswick 5 8 38
The Under 12s squad got
off to a slow start and Creswick opened a big lead . In
the second half the boys began to play their best footy
for the year and so ended on
a positive note with three
individual goal scorers. T

Netball
Round 6 v Creswick
13&Under B - Ballan came
up against a strong Creswick team but nevertheless
the girls fought hard, Erynn
Vella and Lauren Alcock
were relentless in defence
taking lots of intercepts.
Bridget Casey was excellent
through the midcourt with
strong driving and passing.
Creswick defeated Ballan.

13&Under
Up against ladder leaders,
Ballan struggled in the first
half but the girls didnt give
up and played much better
in the second half. Maddi
Alcock did a great job in
centre and was well backed
up by Lara Casey in WD, the
pair took plenty of intercepts and were also vital in
bringing the ball down the
court. Megan Hammond
and Ellie Burquest moved
well in goals helping to increase Ballans score.
Creswick 30 defeated Ballan 10.
15&Under
Some settled passages of
play in the final quarter
helped secure the under
15s third win of the season beating Creswick by 2
goals. In what was a nail
biting last quarter the girls
determination to win was a
highlight and allowed them
to take the lead when it
counted most. While it was
a strong performance by
the entire team, Cate Lidgett was best on court for her
exceptional
rebounding
and intercepting display in
goal keeper.
17&Under
Creswick
proved
too
strong for Ballan, Creswick
25 defeated Ballan 17.
C Grade
Ballan were defeated by a
stronger side in Creswick,
best on court was Tamara
Hodge. Creswick 26 defeated Ballan 13.
B Grade
Ballan shook off Creswick
after a close first quarter
to take control of the game
and increase their lead;
best on court was Bec Conroy. Ballan 37 defeated Creswick 18.
A Grade
A disappointing loss for
Ballan with inaccuracy
costing the girls, best on
court was Stacey Casella.
Creswick 47 defeated Ballan 31.

Round 6 v Newlyn
Juniors
The Under 12 game was
fiercely contested with both
teams battling for position.
Lucas Blazko and Bailey
Colligan were the main goal
kickers with two goals each.
Hamish Wilken was great
around the ball and Branson Nicholich played good
attacking football. Charlie
Zielinski worked hard at
the ball and ran all day with
Lachie Cove holding strong
in defence all game.
Under 14.5 - The boys started the game well, defending
solidly and working hard to
get the ball into the forward
line. The game was delayed
by an injury to Gordon at
the end of the first quarter
and play only returned for
a shortened last quarter. It
was a subdued Gordon that
played out the last quarter,
with Newlyn scoring freely.
The boys battled the game
out and were unlucky not to
score in the end.
Newlyn 11.10 (76) d Gordon 0.1 (1)
Under 17.5
The team tried hard and
went down to a better Newlyn side. Goals were hard
to find with Jack Toohey,
Angus Headon and Rohan
Clampitt playing well. We
battled manfully but came
up against a better side.
Newlyn 11.10 (76) d Gordon 3.5 (23)
Reserves - The team had
a great win this week with
Gary Busuttil having a field
day in the forward line kicking seven goals.Best - Beau
Porter, Luke Toohey , Paul
Leahy, Mick Kersley and T.
Conder.

Gordon 15.13 (103) d Newlyn 7.3 (45)

Seniors
Mark and Luke Gunnell
started off the day running
through a 100 senior game
banner and the day ended
in a good result. Despite
playing in the ruck and in
the backline, both boys
were moved up forward in
the last quarter, kicking a
goal each.
The first half of the game
was evenly contested with
the Eagles having a three
goal lead at half time. Newlyn gave the Gordon team a
bit of a scare in the first half,
keeping up with the Eagles
and determined at every
contest. Unfortunately the
second half saw Gordon
kick 20 goals to Newlyns
two. Mick Nolan was relentless around the ground,
booting eight goals and
James Murphy five.
In the best were Steven
Patterson, Mick Nolan,
Ashley
Munari,
Adam
Toohey, Joshua Lee and Tye
Murphy.

Juniors
The 17&under girls played
a closely contested game in
the first quarter, with both
teams taking time to settle

The Gordon team played a
strong defensive combination, with Meredith moving

intercepts outside of the

the passes down the court.
Rosie worked hard to receive the centre passes and
set up the play, while Ness

Jaimi Dunstone. Bold attacking from Hannah McCrabb in the last quarter
(getting great feed) and a
determined Eagles defence

victorious 38-35.
In C Grade, Gordon celebrated their first win. The
