Hong Kong, a Special Administrative Region of China since 1997, is a global hub for financial services. With a strong free trade policy, Hong Kong is also an important conduit for business with mainland China.

The former British colony has continued its close relationship with the UK: over 300 British companies have regional headquarters or offices in Hong Kong and the governments work together closely on financial service regulation and low-carbon growth.

OVERVIEW
Hong Kong, a natural harbour gateway to mainland China, has a long history as a centre or international trade and evolved into Asia’s leading financial powerhouse in the 1970s. Since becoming a Special Administrative Region o China in 1997, Hong Kong continued to maintain its role as a global corporate and banking hub and strengthened its position as a conduit or trade with China. Hong Kong’s economic success is underwritten by its strong ree trade policy: no tariff is changed on importing or exporting goods. As a result, Hong Kong has been recognised as the world’s most ree economy since the Index o Economic Freedom began in 1995 and is currently ranked second in the World Bank’s Ease o Doing Business report. A ormer British colony, Hong Kong continues to maintain a close relationship with the UK: over 300 British companies have regional headquarters or offices in Hong Kong and it is the UK’s third biggest export market in the Asia Pacific region, afer China and India. More than hal o all the UK’s investment in Asia is in Hong Kong, and the British government works closely with the region’s government on issues such as financial service regulation, education and low-carbon growth. Several major inrastructure projects are currently underway in Hong Kong and offer additional opportunities or British companies in the region, with £29 billion o investment scheduled up to 2016.
