Sojourn Falls Scarf

This scarf takes you on a journey down twisting paths and over the sparkling cascades of waterfalls. The simple lace and cable construction of this design is an easy lesson in newskills, yet interesting enough for seasoned knitters.Please read the pattern completely before beginning. A beading tutorial is included if youwish to add beads.

Materials:

Size 6 (4 mm) knitting needles450 yards (approximate) Knit Picks Palette or other fingering weight yarn (A single color or lightly variegated yarn will highlight the pattern.) The pictured scarf was knit with alittle less than 2 skeins of Knit Picks Palette in Tidepool Heather colorway.6 stitch markersCable needle540 (or 9 beads per pattern repeat) size 6/0 beads (optional)Collapsible beading needle, a small crochet hook or thin wire for beading November 2009 © Jamie Roe1

Abbreviations:

Common knitting abbreviations are used throughout. Here are some thatmay be unfamiliar or are my designated abbreviations for this pattern.PM: place marker B: work seed stitch border C6B: place first 3 stitches on cable needle held behind work, knit the next 3 stitches,then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needleC6F: place first 3 stitches on cable needle held in front of work, knit the next 3 stitches,then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle* *: repeat stitches between symbols as many times as pattern states

Instructions:

Cast on 53 stitches.

Border:

Row 1 (Set up row): This row is *K1,P1* to the last stitch then K1. Markers are placed between stitches in this way- 7sts, PM, 9sts, PM, 6sts, PM, 9sts, PM, 6sts, PM, 9sts, PM,7sts for a total of 53 stitches.Rows 2-10: Work in seed stitch (*K1, P1* repeating to last stitch, K1. On the next rowrepeat the pattern but notice that you are knitting the purls and purling the knits to createthe seed stitch patterning).

Body:

For all body rows, work the first and last 7 stitches of each row in seed stitch.Row 11 (RS): B7, *P3, K3, YO, P3, K6* (2x), P3, K3, YO, P3, B7.Row 12 (WS): B7, *K3, P4, K3, P6* (2x), K3, P4, K3, B7.Row 13: B7, P3, K1, K2tog, YO, K1, P3, C6B, P3, K1, K2tog, YO, K1, P3, C6F, P3,K1, K2tog, YO, K1, P3, B7Row 14: B7, *K3, P2, P2tog, K3, P6* (2x), K3, P2, P2tog, K3, B7.Row 15: B7, *P3, K1, YO, K2tog, P3, K6* (2x), P3, K1, YO, K2tog, P3, B7.Row 16: B7, *K3, P3, K3, P6* (2x), K3, P3, K3, B7.Repeat Rows 11-16 sixty times or until the scarf is the desired length before blocking.A chart is provided on the last page for knitters who prefer charted directions.After completing Row 16 of the final repeat, work 10 rows in seed stitch before loosely binding off. Beading Option:

Beads are placed on right side Rows 11, 13, 15 on the stitch just before the YO.On Row 13 the YO is worked after a K2tog. To ensure that the bead lays properly youmust place it on the 2

stitch of the K2tog (i.e., when you’re ready to work the K2tog,slip the first stitch to your right needle, add a bead to the second stitch, then return theslipped stitch to your left needle and knit the two stitches together).There are many ways to add beads to stitches. The following tutorial shows my methodthat uses a collapsible beading needle or a thin piece of wire bent in half 1: Thread the bent wire through the stitch to be beaded. 2: Slip that stitch off the needleleaving it on the wire. 3: Hold the 2 ends of the wire together and slip a bead onto thewire. 4: Slide the bead down the wire onto the stitch. 5: Now return the stitch to the leftneedle being careful not to twist it. 6: Remove the wire and knit the stitch.
