What Are Readability .Formulas?
We can dissect the term “readability” into“read” + “ability,” which translates intothe ability to read. Readability hasnothing to do with either legibility orliteracy. In fact, readability is more of ajudgmental exercise for the targetedaudience. George Klare (1963) definesreadability as “the ease of understandingor comprehension due to the style ofwriting.” We can consider readability as means tomeasure the difficulty of text or page layout, so thewriter knows how effectivelyhis text will reach histarget audience before he publishes or distributes it.We can assess readability through readability tests byapplying readability formulas. Readability formulas aremathematical in nature; each formula’s primary aim is tomeasure the grade level a person must have to read andcomprehend a text. Writers consider readability formulasas simple ways to judge read-ability, i.e., the level ofdifficulty of a text.Readability formulas work by measuring certain featuresof a text based on mathematical calculations. We basethese readability measures on a handful of factors; themost common factors include the number of words in asentence, as well as the number of letters or syllablesper word. Most readability formulas are based on onesemantic factor (i.e., the difficulty of words), and onesyntactic factor (i.e., the difficulty of sentences). We
