Some of you have probably heard about Facebook and may even have a profileaccount in it. But for those who don’t know what it is, we are going to define it.Definition:Facebook is a global social networking website that allows to its users to addfriends, send them messages, upload an unlimited number of photos, share linksand videos, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves.Even if a community like Facebook serves numerous advantages, it also provesto have certain disadvantages as well. We are going to state what are thearguments regarding the different advantages and disadvantages of Facebook.
At first, Facebook was founded by a student from Harvard and his roommates. It was initiallylimited to Harvard students, but was opened to other colleges to later be expanded all over theworld to anyone possessing an email address.First, Facebook increases the communication and connection between friends and the onlinecommunity. When it comes with communication, it most certainly has a lot of advantageswhen it tackles about communication by making people socialize with each other. Itespecially can allow its users to track down long lost friends, acquaintances and relatives thatthey haven't seen for years. Through the system's organization of profiles, users can haveaccess to other personal interests that a contact can use. This can also be considered as a perfect dating service system. For example, I take my own personal experience; I spent mywhole life in Kuwait and came back to Tunisia 7 years ago. During these last years, I lostcontact with all my friends, but thanks to Facebook I was surprisingly happy to find them. And till now we are still talking to each other.Facebook can also be used as an advertising tool for some companies or marketingagencies. In fact, audiences are skipping TV spots instead, and they’re talking about products, brands and events on Facebook and searching for the reviews and opinions of other customersin the chat window before they buy. Armed with various tools that allow them to ask trustedfriends what they think or give an opinion about products. It’s a word of mouth on fire process. Interestingly, on the top 25 fan pages on Facebook are brand pages (Coke, Nutella ,nestlé). Equally interesting is the fact that 83 of the top 100 brands on Facebook have run Facebook ad campaigns. Marketing agencies do like this method because it does notcost them any money to put their advertisings on Facebook ; it’s for free. However, over time Facebook's evil sides have shone through.First, the lack of anonymity: You are putting out information about your name, location, age, gender, and many other types of information that you may not want to let others know.Unfortunately, there is a potential for failure of security in both personal and business context. For example, some employers use Facebook to do background checks on current and potentialemployees’ profiles and interests and make a biased judgment even before meeting andinterviewing them.Second, false advertisements may end up uploading viruses and spywares on a user’scomputer. Moreover, hijacking Facebook accounts became more frequent these days. For instance, yesterday, on the top news, hijackers took over almost 300 Facebook accounts. Thishighlights the concern over how easy it is for anyone to hijack a shared interest group on thesocial networking site. They can post sexually explicit photos on users’ page, harass their friends online and try to set up a telephone account using their names.
