The BDE 2010 Research Project
(BDERP, or Dragon’s Den of Dance as it is commonly referred to) is anopportunity for dance artists to propose and deliver a practical choreographic research project, which influences theartist’s artistic development and informs the wider UK dance sector.
Who we are: The Producing Partnership
BDE 2010 has brought together a number of key UK dance organisations, who have pooled resources and fundingto create the right conditions for a number of choreographic research projects which address identified needs of thecurrent UK dance sector. These organisations form the
The Producing Partnership for BDERP.
Depending on thelevel of investment, members of the Producing Partnership are either Main contributors or Secondary Contributors. The Main Contributors are: Birmingham Hippodrome, DanceXchange, New Moves International, The Place,Woking Dance FestivalSecondary Contributors are: Aerowaves, Dance 4, Dance East, Dance Umbrella, Deda, Dublin Dance Festival,East London Dance, Greenwich Dance Agency, The Lowry, Merseyside DanceNetwork, Sadlers Wells, South East Dance, Yorkshire DanceBetween them, The Producing Partnership has allocated £ 39,000 plus significant in-kind support for the project.
What we aim for:
Collectively, we have committed funds and pooled resources for this project in order to develop choreographicpractice, which will have a significant and positive impact on the UK dance sector. Our aims are:
•
To make possible several choreographic research projects that nurture experimentation in danceperformance
•
To address a perceived lack of risk taking amongst choreographers in Britain because many artists arefocussed on developing touring frameworks for the distribution of their artistic work
•
To develop artistic practice and grow ambition amongst dance artists
•
To highlight the research work taking place, by the very fact that a wide group of dance organisations areinvesting in it – in effect, bringing profile to it
•
To bring together a wide range of dance organisations/individuals that have a wealth of knowledge, in thepursuit of artistic excellenceWe have identified the lines of enquiry that we seek artists to address in their research projects. We feel that theseresearch strands are of particular importance to develop choreographic practice in the UK dance sector.
The Research Strands are:
•
Live-arts based work from artists in mid to late career
•
Multi-disciplinary dance work
•
The creation of dance work that is transferable between different formats (e.g. different scales, theatre andnon-theatre environments, professional / non-professional casts)
•
Work for children and familiesWe aim to fund at least one research project for each of the four strands. It is likely that some of the pitched ideasrelate to several of the strands. For example, it is possible that a pitched research project is for children and familiesand falls under the category of multi-disciplinary work.
