What the Boy’s ReadingClub is all about…
In the academic achievement assessments carried out by theProgramme for International Student Assessment (PISA) a largeinternational sample of girls and boys were tested. The result: atrend in education has emerged, namely that there is a significantgender gap in reading and writing. Girls performed significantlybetter than boys on these reading and writing tests. Loweracademic achievement can have a negative impact on self-esteem,and poor reading performance can also have a profound effect onlack of accomplishment in other subjects. The Boy’s Reading Clubwas designed by Laurier Student’s for Literacy (LSFL) as a way toacknowledge and remedy this growing trend. The Boy’s ReadingClub is geared towards elementary school boys and helping themwith all elements of literacy. As a committee LSFL volunteers willcome together every other Thursday from 4:00 to 5:00pm in orderto form the Boys Reading Club. By incorporating superheroes, action figures, and comic books the Boys Reading Club promotesgetting boys involved in reading, writing, and fun. Every otherweek there will be a new: theme, activity, and occasionally aspecial event.
