1)Introduction
PPSMI is learning and teaching science and mathematics in English. In 2003, theMalaysian government implemented a new policy in the national education system; English ismade the language of instruction in schools for the teaching of Mathematics, Science andtechnology subjects. These subjects had formerly been taught in the Malay language.
 
PPSMI isthe outcome of a policy decision made by the Government of Malaysia as the result from theMinister`s Council Meeting held on 19July 2002.The implementation of PPSMI was carried out in stages beginning with the 2003 schoolingsession. The pioneers were all Year 1 students for Primary Schools, Form 1 and Lower 6students for Secondary Schools.The full implementation of PPSMI was in 2007 for SecondarySchools and 2008 for Primary Schools.The rationale for the decision to change the medium of instruction from the MalayLanguage to English for the teaching and learning of Science and Mathematics subjects wasmade based on the government’s concern on the nation’s human capital development towardsachieving the standard of a developed country, as well as an early preparation to complete in theera of globalization.It is widely known that the field of science and mathematics form the basis and have acrucial role in the progress and development of a country. Various innovations and discoveries inthese two fields happen rapidly and information access is mostly in the English language.

English language is also the language spoken internationally and mastery in this languagewould allow easy access to information in these fields.The policy decision to implement PPSMIwas made to ensure students’ mastery in science and mathematics by referencing one of policyto change people in Malaysia.
2) History
Teaching Science & Mathematics in English or PPSMI is the outcome of a policydecision made by the Government of Malaysia as a result from the Minister `s Council Meetingheld on 19 July 2002. Within this year 2002, our National Education Policy had drawn a history by changing a Malay Language to English for the teaching and learning of Science andMathematics subjects.
