“Yours, O LORD, is the greatness, The power and the glory, The victory and the majesty; For all that is in heaven and in earth is Yours; Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, And You are exalted as head over all.”
(1Chronicles 29:11)Dear friendsWell, here we are finally in Salatiga, Indonesia. There has been somuch planning , praying and training to get this far and yet in manysenses it’s only just beginning! We have been here for two weeks nowand have been learning so much already. I think if we’re honest a lot oour learning has been about ourselves and how we still often think weare able to do things in our own strength!! Not being able to speak aword of Indonesian certainly brings you down to earth when you tryeven the most basic of communication! At times we have felt like littlebabies having to be taken everywhere at first and having someoneelse speak for us too!!We have a very comfortable house, which we are grateful for. A few peoplehave mango trees in their gardens, well, we are the proud possessors of a chilliplant!! We are waiting eagerly for our first crop! Also with the house came ahouse helper, which has been another area in which we have had to listen tothe Lord in. When we heard we would have a house helper in our pride we said“we don’t need a house helper, we can do everything ourselves” but agreed for her to come 3 times a week. Well let me tell you after just a couple of days of trying to clean, cook, wash, iron and do everything for ourselves in the heatand humidity we soon realised that it was time for a piece of humble pie!!Already Ibu Warne has proved herself to be a great help not only round thehouse but also in the area of language as we try and communicate with eachotherother she is very patient. We thank God for this opportunity to buildon this relationship and for opportunities for us to share our faith with her asshe doesn’t know the Lord.

We have been very grateful for all those who have verypatiently taken us shopping over the last couple of weeks tohelp us set up home. At times we’ve felt that our brainscouldn’t take any more decision making about what to andwhat not to buy!! We are pleased to say that today marks avery important milestone in that we were able to get into townon the bus by ourselves, buy everything we wanted to, and getback in one piece without any mishaps!! Like I say we have feltlike little babies at times!! The minibuses stop running at 6pmso to help us get around still after this time we have bought a couple of cheap push bikes. Salatiga is built inthe shadow of an extinct volcano, and is VERY hilly so we hope to get a little fitter at the same time!! It hasbeen a bit of a shock after the flatness of Hull and Lincolnshire.Life starts very early here, every morning we are woken by the callto prayer ……….which reminds us of how we need to pray too for those who are from different faiths to ours. Another shock wasthat church starts at 7am! Fortunately it is not too far from us, sowe are able to walk there. It appears to be a really good churchwith lively worship and good preaching (or so we are told!). Davidwas pleased to see a drum kit in the worship band. The wholeservice is in Indonesian so the first week we understood 2 words, amen and hallelujah!! We were encouraged this week to understand about 8 words and to be able to find thereading ourselves in our Bibles. Everyone is so friendly that it really spurs on to try and learn the languagemore so that we can communicate with them. One of our friends, Mel, from our time at the NTM training centre in England came here in July so it has been really great to have a familiar face around, it helps a lot.We would appreciate your prayer that we would be flexible and sensitive to the Lord’s voice daily and in eachsituation we find ourselves in. At the end of November the rest of our group arrives and then our orientationand language learning will pick up pace. We have seen the Lord’s timing in us arriving a few weeks early as ithas meant that we have a little time to adjust before the official programme starts being slow learners thismeans a lot to us.Thank-you once again for all your support in so many ways, we are particularly aware of our need for prayer and thank-you for being a part of the team reaching tribal people in Indonesia. With lots of love David and Chris
