QUALIFICATIONS:

BA hons in Fine Art at Durham University 1961 (Art department, Kings College,
Newcastle-Upon-Tyne).
ALA (Associate of Library Association) Postgraduate qualification in Librarianship,
North Western Polytechnic School of Librarianship/Library Association, London,
1970.

EMPLOYMENT EXPERIENCE:

Foundation course teaching Sunderland College of Art, 1961. Supply secondary
school teaching (Hackney, 1962); temporary work in factories, shops, offices and the
Post Office.

Executive Officer, Civil Service: National Assistance Board, 1962-66.
Assistant Librarian: Camden Public Libraries 1966-70; Hornsey College of Art
library 1970-73.
Freelance writer, artist, and art critic 1973-75.

Part-time art history lecturer at West Surrey College of Art 1975-81; and Middlesex
Polytechnic, 1975-81.
Associate lecturer at Middlesex 1981-92. Full-time senior lecturer at Middlesex Sept
1992, Reader in Art and Design History, 1993-99 (Retired in 1999, then a freelance
art critic and art historian. Resumed painting in 2005.)

ADDITIONAL TEACHING
Open University: modern art course, summer school teaching.
STUDIO SPECIALISATIONS:
Art theory, painting, photo-montage.

Assisted in the planning of art & design history courses for art & design

undergraduates. Also developed modular scheme art-history modules on 'Realism'
and 'Art and mass media', \u2018British Art and Design 1945-70',and 'Visual Culture
Studies'. MA history of Design, historiography unit.

RESEARCH:
Academic research of a historical and critical character concerning the subjects of
modern art, mass media and design. See publications list.
