Computational model of
Vida River (Denmar!
Exercise 1
River Modeling by MIKE11
St"dent Exercise #r$ 1 (MIKE11!
The exercise is a small case study from river management:
1D-simulation of river flow
The exercise is based on the Vida-River, given with all data in the software documentation of
M!"11# $ll data from there can be used as are# During the exercise modifications have to be done
to learn how to use the software and understand the reactions of a fluvial system#
Management of the River Vid
System Overview
The Vid% river model has some characteristic locations for boundary and internal flow regime
conditions:
&ater level time series
Discharge time series
'um( stations#
Two (um( stations have been considered in the given model by constant discharge boundary

conditions# The other (um( stations are not considered in the model#
Modeling Tasks
The modeling tas) of this exercise 1 is main three (arts: model set-u(, model o(timi*ation and
model study#
1. Model Set-Up
+irst tas) is to ada(t the given river model to a list of (redefined model information:
o Sediment !!"m"lations:
$fter the latest measurements of the Vid% River cross sections, minor mor(hology
changes have been discovered in the main channel ,VD$--"D and VD$$-Mel.
due to a sediment trans(ort ,siltation.# 'lease modify the cross sections at s(ecified
chainages res(ectively by sand filling, which should result in an elevation of the
channel bottom level as defined below:
River name chainage elevation
VD$--"D 1/0, 112 m 33 cm
VD$--"D 3014, 3545 m 31 cm
VD$$-M"6 3427, 0313 m 38 cm
VD$$-M"6 0822, 022/ m 37 cm
o #is!harge $o"ndary #ata:
9ome discharge values ,boundary conditions. have to be modified:
River name chainage constant discharge
6-D9!:V 1#/ m ;< /#21 m=>s for the whole (eriod
9:-D"R$$ /#/ m ;< /#11 m=>s for 1st 9e( to 11th 9e(
;< /#4/ m=>s for 12th 9e( to 1st :ct
o %"mpstations:
?ydrological events increased the amount of water in the drainage system of ?@Aer
!og, Rudb@l !og and M@gelt@nder !og area as well as Brunotten)oog and
?Clltofter Tief on the Derman side# There is an urgent need to discharge the
excessive drainage water from this (older area into the Vid% River during the
modeling (eriod by the existing (um( stations at the end of the collecting channels#
,see the ma( and (hotos.#
Eou should consider the following sim(lified conditions:
a# The total amount of the water at each (um(estation to be released to the
Vid% river during the 0/ days is s(ecified in column 0 of the table below#
b# The ranges for the (um(ing rate at the stations to deliver the above
amounts are given in column 8, 1 and 2 for three time windows of the
simulation (eriod#

'. Model Optimi(ation
The given model is without any structures# 'lease o(timi*e the model by suitable human
inventions ,broad crested weirs, dredging, dams etc#. to fit the general targets of the river
model:
o )avigation: Maintain a minimum water level in the main river for navigation
(ur(oses, (articularly between the -orth 9ea and the Aunction in the river near
M@llehus ,'um(estation. ,VD$$-M"6 131/.
o *looding: 6imit the maximum water level to (rotect against flooding in all
branches for the defined (eriod
o T+nder %ark ,ake: Maintain a minimum water level through the town of T@nder
for amenity (ur(oses ,o(eration of fountain.
'lease manage this river system with the given constraints and targets# Eou can add
structures li)e broad crested weirs but not more than six in total# Eou could also carry out
some limited dredging or to rise u( the di)es and dams# ?owever you should aim to have no
flooding for the given simulation time (eriod# The boats are small (leasure craft that need a
de(th of water of 1#3 m#
Ta)e care to minimi*e velocities in the river to reduce sediment trans(ort# $lso, aim to use
storage efficiently#
