Did you ever wonder
...
About starting a new familytradition? About fifteen years ago one of my brothers, Ben, was about tohave a garage sale, when my parents asked if they could give him a fewthings to include in the sale. “You can keep any money you make.You’re doing us a favor by getting this old stuff out of here,” my fathersaid.Naturally, my brother took the items over to his house and began to go through and price them.One of the items was a large brown, ugly vase that Ben made in grade school for my mother. Mybrother called me laughing that our mother had passed off this elementary art project for sale in theown artist’s garage sale! We laughed and laughed until I said, “Wait. Don’t you dare sell the vase!”Ben said, “It’s ugly. Nobody is going to buy it anyway.” I agreed on its unattractive look and said,“Wrap it up and giveit to Mom for Christmas. We’ll write a poem, place it inside with instructions forthe family “ugly.” Again, we laughed.Several months later on Christmas morning, all six of my mother’s children, with our husbands,wives and smaller children of our own looked on as my mother began to unwrap her present fromBen. My siblings and I knew what was coming. It took my mother forever to peel off the wrappingas we all tried to hold back our excitement and laughter.As my mother pulled back the tissue paper and saw the vase, she burst out laughing. “I got rid ofthis,” she managed to squeak out between gasping for her breath.“There’s something inside. Read it,” I said.After my mother reached inside and pulled out the piece of paper, she read:

Ode to the Family Ugly
To you I pass on this cherished ugly.It’s been part of the family for years.Do not take this passage lightly or smugly.Or you may be foiled in future careers.Let me tell you the story of this pottery’s latest travail.This past summer Dad handed Ben old things in a box.His school days brown vase must be allowed to prevail, And honestly when Ben shared this news the family felt shocks.However, with this gift do not plunder.Do not now become overly attached.Even though this ugly may appear as a blunder,It must, in the future, be re-dispatched.Take this torch and guard it with respect.For this is your present for Christmas celebration.I know you wanted it back and will not object.Shame on you, Mom for attempted abrogation!No. No. Not this. Anything in the world but this.This piece has history, memories and multiple use.To get rid of this treasure would be certain remiss.Mom, how could you perpetrate such nostalgic abuse?We laughed and laughed until we cried. Over the last fifteen years this ugly vase has been giftedand regifted to various family members for weddings, graduations, birthdays, house closings,Christmas, Easter, Valentine’s Day and even one Groundhog’s Day.It’s seen some wear and tear ~ one year it was dropped and broke into seven or eight pieces. Itwas promptly super-glued back to its near original shape.It has become one of the most delightful family traditions we have. One rule is the “ugly” must be ondisplay~not shoved into a closet or cabinet. And whenever the “ugly” is gifted, a note which in-cludes the date, the occasion and both the giver’s and recipient’s name, is folded and put insidewith all the other notes. To further the tradition, all the notes are reread as the next recipient beginshis/her turn with the “ugly.”

Brick Oven Courtyard Grille will give you a $10.00 gift certificate for helpingsupport our community by donating to Working Class Hero Fund. Go to
for more information.
Working Class Hero Fundis a newly established organization founded on the tenet thatthere are many good, hard working people in today’s society that experience traumaticevents that leave them unable to meet basic necessities. While these individuals wouldchoose not to seek charity, they find themselves in an unenviable position of needing assistance, and thenfind that they do not meet guidelines of more traditional providers.WCHF will provide crisis funding for local individuals that can prove they are gainfully employed and canshow need. Participants must be able to articulate what circumstances caused the crisis, and what stepsthey plan to take to prevent similar circumstances from occurring again. Funds will not be distributed to theindividuals, but directly used to resolve the immediate crisis. Participants will not be asked to repay theamount, but will be asked to sign an ethical contract that will require that they somehow “pay forward” thegood will assistance that was given to them. That “pay it forward” can be as simple as helping a friend inneed, mowing the lawn of an elderly neighbor, or volunteering at a local non-profit.
This last Halloween weekend, on Halloween, my son turned 15. I don’t know if I had alapse in sanity or what when I told him he could invite 14 same aged kids to the housefor a dance, band, birthday, costume party. As could be guessed, I didn’t recognizemost of his friends because of masks, face paint, unusual hairdos and dress. My sondressed up like a hippy. Upside: I only spent about three dollars on pink John Lennon styleglasses as between my husband, brother and myself, we had all the hippy accoutrements:moccasin boots, beads, peace signs, head bands and a Bob Marley tie dyed shirt. Downside: Mychild is dressing up as me in my youth ~ who knew? About an hour into the party, I took my dog outside to do his duty. Two costumed girls walked uptoward me. “Hi,” I said. “What are your names?” One of the girls spoke up and said, “Amber.” Ibacked up to the front door and opened it. “Go inside. My brother will show you where the restof the kids are.” Amber and her friend walked into the house, turned and looked at me. The othergirl said, “We’re just a trick or treaters.” I immediately apologized and gave them extra candy.Thankfully we all laughed at the misunderstanding as they walked back out of the house.
Footnote: The kids were well behaved at the party, but I wasn’t sorry to see them go home.
