Wilson CountyCommissioners were atodds with one another on anumber of issues and endedup making decisions that didnot exactly show support fortheir constituents.Monday night’smeeting began with District22 Commissioner HeatherScott of Mt. Juliet movingtwo resolutions to right afterthe reading of the minutesbecause she had to leaveduring the meeting. Those resolutionsdealt with removing theRoad Committee Chairman’ssalary and another aboutholding the funding of theconstruction on the county’sportion of Curd Road. The most importantissue of the evening wasthe latter of the two, whichScott wanted to amend tosay that the funding shouldbe reconsidered after theold Mt. Juliet Elementaryproperty on Mt. Juliet Roadhad sold and closed. Theoriginal wording said forthe Budget Committee toreconsider the issue in 120days if the resolution to fundit with capital outlay notesfailed.District 15Commissioner Mike Justiceand several others said thatthey would not vote for theuse of capital outlay notes, but urged that the countyshould pay for its portion. The county hasentered into a contract withOdell Binkley to buy theproperty for $3.4 million andhe has 120 days to pay thatmoney. He has the optionof asking for up to two 30-day periods of extra time, but he would be forced topay $25,000 of his earnestmoney if he asked for them.“If you all vote to borrow thismoney (with capital outlaynotes), I’m going to movethat we borrow $40 millionto build a new school,” saidDistrict 20 CommissionerAnnette Stafford.Scott’s amendmentdid not pass, but theoriginal version of theresolution was accepted.District 21 CommissionerEugene Murray said that thepeople of Mt. Juliet did notnecessarily need the moneyimmediately, but they didneed to see that this bodysupports them. The other resolution, which came
rst, was achange of the Special Actsof 1961 that gave the RoadCommission chairman amonthly salary of three timesa commissioner’s per diem, which according to District 2Commissioner Chris Sorey, was $5 a month, makingthe chairman’s salary $15 amonth.“In 1961, the CountyCommission, which wascalled the Quarterly CountyCourt, only met four times a year and the Road Committeemet every month,” Soreysaid. “If you account forin
ation of $15 from 1961,it would translate into$108 today, but since thechairman got a raise everytime the commissioners gota raise, he makes $1,200 amonth today.”Sorey added that thisis nothing personal towardMayor Robert Dedman, whois the Road Commissionchairman, because thisresolution would not takeeffect until Sept. 1, 2010, when the county would havea new mayor. He also saidthat the three candidatesrunning for county mayoragreed with his resolution.“This is just aboutadjusting something that isinappropriate at this time,”Sorey said. You’ve got toremember whose money it isthat you are spending,” saidDistrict 19 CommissionerL.T. Jenkins. “Do you wantto pay $1,200 a month forsomeone to preside over ameeting? Come on!”The vote was one voteshy of the 17 votes neededfor a two-thirds majority butMurray said he was confusedby the vote. Sorey moved tohave the vote reconsideredand it was; however, it stillfailed by a wider marginthan the previous time. The meeting then continued with committee reportsand then the voting on theremaining resolutions. The resolution tofund the county’s portion of the Curd Road construction with capital outlay notes was deferred to theMarch meeting. The otherresolutions passed with littlediscussion.
