Guyana (ormerly British Guyana), an English-speakingcountry on the north coast o South America, has a small humanpopulation concentrated along the coast. Te rest o the country is a marvelous stretch o unbroken, mostly untouched rainorestblending into savanna on the border with Brazil. It is slowly awakening to the potential o ecotourism and the consequentsustainable use o natural habitats, so our tour is a timely supportto encourage this progress.Guyana is home to Kaieteur Falls, where the Potaro Riverplunges 741 eet in the single longest drop o any waterall in the world. It is also home to the vast Iwokrama Forest Reserve andits miles o orest roads and trails and a new canopy walkway. Tis reserve has gained the reputation o being among the bestsites on Earth or such amazing species as Harpy Eagle and Jaguar. We take in the Amerindian village o Surama, at anecolodge run by the local Macushi tribe situated in savanna andringed by the orest-covered Pakaraima Mountains. We visitthe Karanambu Ranch along the Rupununi River, an ecolodgerun by Diane Mcurk, world amous or her rehabilitationo orphaned Giant Otters, and eatured in wildlie shows o David Attenborough and Gerald Durrell. We experience a land where travel by boat is common along several mighty rivers, theEssequibo, Demerara and Rupununi, arising on the GuyananShield and owing out into the Atlantic. Tis is an excellentopportunity to bird the riches o South America – diversity willbe very high!
Day 1: Arrival in Guyana
On arrival, we transer to our hotel in Georgetown.
Day 2: Botanical Garden/Iwokrama Field Station
Tis morning, we have an early start at the GeorgetownBotanical Gardens, a marvelous area o palms, mature trees, waterways covered in lotus blossoms, and many choice birds, including parrots, macaws, antbirds, piculets, and perhapsthe star bird o the gardens – Blood-coloured Woodpecker, a very scarce endemic limited to coastal Guyana and Suriname. We then y to the Iwokrama Field Station in the immenseIwokrama Forest Preserve or a two-night stay. A night drivecould turn up White-winged Potoo, an owl or two, and a airchance at a Jaguar.
Day 3: Iwokrama Forest Reserve
We spend all day birding this antastic area. Our tally at theend o the day should be quite impressive; possibilities includetrogons, jacamars, barbets, oropendulas, and the extremely rareRuous-vented Ground-Cuckoo. Both Howler and SpiderMonkeys are requently encountered, and there is always achance or Harpy Eagle. An evening boat ride may revealseveral Black Cayman and white Ghost Bats.
