Recently we were challenged on 2 Corinthians Chapter 6, specifically the 14
th
verse. As we usedthe verse in a teaching concerning maintaining friendships with the world. The challenge wasthat in this persons opinion the verse was strictly referring to marriage of a believer and anunbeliever. This is not the case even though that view is supported as well. But it was/is not thecentral basis of the verse.Do not yoke yourselves together in a team with unbelievers. For how can righteousness andlawlessness be partners? What fellowship does light have with darkness?(2 Corinthians 6:14 cjb)Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousnesswith unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?(2 Corinthians 6:14 KJV)Now it is true that I hound folks to take scripture in context. And I am guilty of using a singleverse with out contextual back up in this case. So to correct this error, I want to approach thisin context for clarity and accountability, so if you do not have your bible's and paper handy nowmight be a good time to grab them.It is a well know premise that Rav Shaul/Rabbi Paul pleaded with the Corinthians to separatethemselves from the unbelievers, but this is not the first time we have been told not toassociate with those who do not have faith.In
Deut. 7:2b,3; [2b]And when the L-rd thy G-d shal smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make NO covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them: [3]Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son,nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son.
And the rest of the chapter explains why we are told NOT to consort/make covenants/be yokedwith unbelievers,
1]
because they will turn us/our children/people away from G-d.
2]
We are aHoly People set apart from the World to be a light and an example to the world of what G-dexpects and has for them. It continues to say that if we Keep the statutes, commandments and judgments that G-d will keep the covenant and the mercy he swore to Avraham, and He wouldbless us, love us, multiply us, and our fruit/seed, lands, crops etc and that we would be blessedabove all peoples. And this continues through the entire chapter, and culminates with verse 26where a final warning is given;
26; Neither shalt thou bring an abomination into thine house, lest thou be a cursed thing like it: but thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it IS a cursed thing.
Now let me add that this is reinforced in 2 John
2 John 1:1-13 KJV The elder unto the elect lady and her children, whom I love in the truth; and not I only, but also all they that have known the truth; (2) For the truth's sake, which dwelleth in us, and shall be with us for ever.(3) Grace be with you, mercy,and peace, from God the
Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of the Father, in truth and love.(4) I
