Single film tickets are reserved for a

screening time and date; however, having
a ticket does not guarantee you a seat.
You must arrive at the venue at least 15
minutes before the scheduled screening
start time. Ticket 4-packs are non-
specific and can be used at any Cinetopia
screening; however, you must arrive at
the venue at least 15 minutes before the

Yes; however, please arrive at least 15

of a screening, simply show up at the
venue 30 minutes before the screening
begins and ask!
CAN TICKET PURCHASES BE
REFUNDED OR EXCHANGED?

WELCOME TO THE THIRD ANNUAL CINETOPIA FILM FESTIVAL!
Its with excitement and a great sense of anticipation that the Michigan Theater and Detroit Institute of Arts
will once again be a part of this ambitious five-day celebration of the artand joyof motion pictures. A true
world-class international film festival, Cinetopia was born three years ago thanks to the vision and tireless
efforts of the many dedicated staffers and programmers at Ann Arbors Michigan Theater.
Last year, for the first time, Cinetopia expanded its offerings to the DIA so that metro Detroiters could also
experience the festivals rich bounty of contemporary world cinemathe best films from the worlds best
festivalsallowing the DIAs year-round Detroit Film Theatre programming to be supplemented by an up-
to-the-minute, truly festive event designed to give area film lovers such a wide selection of films that every
visitor has the ability to virtually design their own personalized festival experience, one that can run from
Wednesday through Sunday, or for just a single day.
The ability to experiment, to experience the newest and most fiercely independent cinematic visions (as well
as a few overlooked classics) without preconceived notions as to what youre going to see is what provides
the electricity at any good film festival; what one leaves with is a sense of discovery, and to achieve that in the
most satisfying way invites total immersion. Plunging right inseeing many different kinds of films over the
course of a few days and discussing them with fellow film lovers and filmmakers over a drink or a between-
film mealis what makes a good festival far more than simply catching a movie.
A major new development this year is that Cinetopias expansion to Detroit doesnt only mean the DIA.
Other screening venues in the metro Detroit area include the College for Creative Studies, the Charles H. Wright
Museum of African American History, the Arab American National Museum and Cinema Detroit. Together with
Ann Arbors theaters, the good news for southeast Michigan movie lovers is that 110 screenings will take place
in 10 venues over the five days of Cinetopiaa far-reaching yet highly accessible cinematic tsunami.
None of this could happen without generous support, including this years Presenting Sponsors:
THE KNIGHT FOUNDATION, TOYOTA, MGM GRAND DETROIT, AT&T and MASCO CORPORATION
FOUNDATION. Wed be remiss in not thanking the DFTs year-round sponsor and friend, BUDDYS PIZZA,
as well as DETROIT PUBLIC TELEVISION and of course the Michigan Theater and DIAs extraordinary staff
and volunteers.
So, for the next five days, we hope that those of you with a cautious nature will consider setting it aside and
going to movies that are as yet un-hyped, that you havent seen previews for, and that you havent read reviews
of. In the months ahead, when friends ask if youve heard of that hot new movie thatll suddenly be all over the
media when it goes into commercial release, you can tell them, Of course Ive heard of it! I saw it at Cinetopia!

This classic JOHN SAYLES film depicts
the dark, shared past of the residents of

locals. When he turns a young Hispanic

1982
U.S. Drama. 90 min.
A well-crafted portrait of Black life in
1980s Philadelphia, 1982 illustrates the
loving and complex father-daughter
relationship between working-class
Timothy and his young daughter, Maya.
Struggling to bring her up in the midst
of his wife Shenaes growing drug habit,
Timothy is hopeful that things will get
better. Things take a turn for the worse,
though, with the appearance of a drug
dealer from Shenaes past. The rift
between Shenae and Timothy widens and
Shenae eventually disappears, leaving
Maya and Timothy on their own. The films
trump card is its incredibly talented cast,
including HILL HARPER (Dr. Sheldon
Hawkes in CSI: NY) and SHARON LEAL
(Private Practice, Boston Public). WAYNE
BRADY (Whose Line Is It Anyway?) gets
a chance to display his versatility as a
hardened drug dealer, and newcomer
TROI ZEE stuns in her role as the
precocious Maya. 1982 is a moving story
that highlights the heavy human toll of
addiction.

The first live-action feature film by two-

Marcel maintains Chomets career-long
fascination with the style of Jacques Tati
while diving head-first into the highly
formalized production designs and story-
telling of Wes Anderson. Relaying the
fantastical tale of Paul, a 33-year old whos
been mute since his parents mysterious
deaths when he was a child, Attila Marcel
features a piano competition, crazy aunts
in matching clothes, strange herbal teas
that create hallucinatory flashbacks,
lots of wrestling, the tango, amateur
taxidermy, and anthropomorphic frogs
playing jazz. Variety called this delightful
film Easily the most innocent, family-

strongly recommended for fans of the
whimsical styling of Amelie.

BAD HAIR
Venezuela. Drama. 93 min.
Poignant and wide-eyed like its nine-
year old protagonist Junior, Bad Hair
is a delightful foray into a Venezuelan
boys obsession with straightening his
stubbornly curly hair. He dreams of
being a singing performer and yearns
to look the part, something his tough
as nails, single mother Marta will never
understand. Her disdain is compounded
by her mother-in-laws indulgence of
Juniors preening. When he tries out
myriad solutions on umpteen occasions
to smooth his hair down for a school
photo, it arouses a wave of homophobia
in Marta. While she is on the lookout for
ways to turn him straight, he is jealous
of the loving intimacy she shares with his
straight-haired baby brother. The more he
tries to look good for her, the more she
pushes him away. Eventually, Junior is put
on the spot and driven to make a painful

THE BETTER ANGELS
U.S. Drama. 95 min.
It may look, sound, and feel like a Terrence
Malick film, but it isnt. Editor-turned-
director A.J. EDWARDS has worked
with the famously iconoclastic filmmaker
and taken those collaborations to heart
in his first feature, The Better Angels.
Chronicling the formative years in young
Abraham Lincolns life, this stunning black
and white debut boasts the kind of poetic
imagery, contemplative atmosphere,
and hushed narration of Malicks work,
but with a hard, emotional core thats
particular to Edwards developing
voice. Set in a log cabin in the Indiana
backwoods, the film follows young
introverted Abe as he endures the death
of his mother, learns to accept a new step-
mother and siblings, and teaches himself
to read and write. The film stars JASON
CLARKE as Lincolns father, DIANE
KRUGER as his supportive step-mother,
indie darling BRIT MARLING, and WES
BENTLEY.

THE CASE AGAINST 8
U.S. Documentary. 112 min.
It was simple. Kristin and Sandra wanted
to get married for the same reason
their parents did: they loved each other.
The same went for Paul and Jeff. But
with Californias Proposition 8 banning
same-sex marriages, the two couples
were forbidden to pursue their happiness.
These couples are selected as the public
faces of opposition to Prop 8 by an
unlikely duo of attorneys. Progressive
DAVID BOIES and ultraconservative TED
OLSON were vigorous opponents during
the legendary Bush v Gore decision. Now,
however, the two attorneys political
motives take a backseat to their common
cause: championing human rights. In The
Case Against 8, we get the inside scoop on
the overturning of the case, which nally
allowed same-sex couples in California
the right to marry. This revealing
documentary deftly balances two stories:
one about the strategy surrounding a
landmark case, and one about families
who unite to make things happen.

Two blocks down, a lone house in the

THE MIAMI SOUND
U.S. Documentary. 56 min.
South Florida has been home to several
music movements throughout the years,
from 2 Live Crew and Miami bass to the
Latin sounds of freestyle. But there may
be one you dont know about. In the
mid-60s, Miami had a burgeoning soul
scene to rival Motown in Detroit or Stax in
Memphis. Started by producers JOHNNY
PEARSALL and WILLIE CLARKE, Deep
City Records was home to artists including
CLARENCE REID, BETTY WRIGHT, and
PAUL KELLY. While they may not be
household names, all three had hit songs.
Deep City was the rst black-owned label
in the state of Florida; unfortunately,
artistic disagreements eventually led to
its demise. Deep City is a fascinating look
at a forgotten portion of American music
history. Now, several decades later, the
labels inspiring story is nally getting the

GOD HELP THE GIRL
U.K. Musical. 111 min.
There are those who love the music of
Belle and Sebastian and there are those
who just dont get it. Frontman STUART
MURDOCH weaves meandering, fragile,
poetical odes to break-ups and hook-
ups that are hopelessly romantic and
sincerely indulgent. So too is his directing
debut, God Help the Girl, the Glasgow-set
musical tale of Eve (EMILY BROWNING),
a depressive pixie girl who escapes from
the hospital to pursue her dream of
becoming a singer. With James (OLLY
ALEXANDER), a clumsily geeky guitarist,
and Cassie (HANNAH MURRAY) a fellow
singer, at her side, Eves warm and dreamy
musical trio tries to turn non- believers
into devotees. If youre familiar with the
twee-before-twee-was-a-word films of

THE GREAT FLOOD
U.S. Documentary. 80 min.
The documentary that The New York
Times called lovely and visual
poetry and the LA Times proclaimed a
terrific achievement has now come to
Cinetopia. In 1927, the Mississippi River
broke its banks in 145 places and flooded
27,000 square miles of the American
South, which contributed to the Great
Migration of displaced workers fleeing
north to cities like Memphis, Chicago, and
Detroitand bringing the Delta Blues with
them. Multimedia artist and filmmaker
BILL MORRISON brings this chapter of
American history to stunning life solely
through the use of beautiful and haunting
archival footage, set to a score created by
guitarist/composer BILL FRISELL that
lushly honors the influence this event had
on the last 85 years of American roots
music. With no dialogue and minimal

gorgeous and lyrical art. DJ

HANNAS JOURNEY
Germany/Israel. Drama. 100 min.
Hanna is a beautiful young German
woman traveling to Israel to work with
cognitively disabled adults and visit a
Holocaust survivor. However, this journey
isnt what it seems; it has been carefully
planned to impress a board considering
her for a position at a huge consulting
rm. In other words, it looks good on her
rsum. What she didnt plan for was Itay,
the handsome young Israeli counselor
who becomes her mentor. She also didnt
reckon with the elderly female survivor
who sees through Hannas motives and
reveals some startling facts about Hannas
own past. A brief trip to establish some
credentials for her prospective employers
becomes a journey across cultures and
into the very center of her heart and
mind. Hannas Journey does not avoid the
sensitive issues of history. It uses honesty,
humor, and compassion to make this
journey one you wont forget.

HELLION
U.S. Drama. 94 min.
AARON PAUL and JULIETTE LEWIS
star in this heartbreaking drama that
acutely captures the misdirected angst of
teenage years. Thirteen-year-old Jacob
is spiraling out of control. Motocross-
obsessed, he and his delinquent friends
trash things out of boredom and
frustration that they hold inside because
of the dire circumstances of their lives.
All hell breaks loose when Jacob enlists
his younger brother, Wes, as a partner
in crime. Still reeling from his wifes
death, Jacobs dad, Hollis, spends more
time drowning his sorrows in alcohol
than taking care of his sons. When Child
Protective Services sends Wes to live with
his Aunt Pam, Hollis and Jacob are forced
to face their culpability as they strive to
bring Wes home. Set in rural Texas, this
2014 SXSW FILM FESTIVAL WINNER is
a heartbreaking portrayal of grief stricken
families who struggle to cope with the
consequences of their loss. PM

JINGLE BELL ROCKS!
Canada. Documentary. 93 min.
Most of us only get in the mood for
Christmas music once a year. Some
people think even thats too often. Music
enthusiast MITCHELL KEZINs obsession
with holiday tunes extends well beyond
the season. It all began with Nat King
Coles The Little Boy That Santa Claus
Forgot. As a child, Mitchell related to the
songs emotional message about a lonely
boy with an absent father. Realizing that
Christmas music was broader and more
complex than generic mainstream fare,
he began digging through dusty crates
at record stores, looking for obscure LPs.
Its a passion thats remained strong for
25 years. Mitchells sincere excitement
is contagious, leading even the biggest
haters to gain a new appreciation for
seasonal ditties. With appearances by
WAYNE COYNE (The Flaming Lips),
JOHN WATERS, JOSEPH RUN
SIMMONS (Run DMC), DR. DEMENTO,
and more, Jingle Bell Rocks! is a delightful
documentary about a very unlikely hobby.

LIFE FEELS GOOD
Poland. Drama. 107 min.
As long as hes been alive, Matuesz
has heard people call him a vegetable.
Crippled by cerebral palsy and unable
to speak, hes been labeled mentally
disabled. His parents hold out hope that
he can understand them, but doctors
refuse to believe hes an intelligent being.
Most of them suggest he be put in a home.
One even compares him to her dog. The
experts are wrong, thoughMatuesz
thinks and feels like anyone else. For him,
every day is a mission to be understood;
another opportunity to prove em all
wrong. Based on a true story, Life Feels
Good is an unbelievable testament to
the endurance of the human spirit. As
the years go by, and the support of his
family begins to dwindle, Matuesz keeps
pushing, never giving up hope that one
day hell finally be heard. Life Feels Good
is a profound tale of perseverance that
underscores the true importance of
human communication.

Willis, a strange singer with innate talent,
is creatively and emotionally stuck. He
drifts through his adopted city of Memphis
in an attempt to ignite a creative spark
that will get him back on track. Unable
to come up with enough material to
make it to the recording studio, he seeks
motivation in legends, hustlers, preachers,
and a bunch of kids, but nothing seems
to help. His girlfriend loves him but grows
increasingly weary of his unpredictable
mood swings. He is gradually losing his
God-given flair and his ability to relate to
the people around him. Circumstances
lead him to pursue a solitary existence
and here the lines between fiction and
reality begin to blur. This 2013 VENICE

U.S. Documentary. 81 min.
The Muslims Are Coming! follows a band of
Muslim-American comedians as they visit
big cities, rural villages, and everything in
between to combat Islamophobia. These
Muzzies not only perform standup at each
tour stop but create ridiculous interventions
in unsuspecting town squares, like the ol
classic Ask a Muslim booth. Throughout
the film, comedy icons like JON STEWART,
DAVID CROSS, JANEANE GAROFALO,
COLIN QUINN, LEWIS BLACK, and
AASIF MANDVI and broadcast
heavyweights like RACHEL MADDOW,
RUSSELL SIMMONS, SOLEDAD OBRIEN,
ALI VELSHI, and The Young Turks CENK
UYGUR comment on the power of
comedy and the political scope of bigotry.
Rest assured, youve never laughed this
hard at a Muslim! Includes a special
post-film Skype Q&A with ARON
KADER, one of the actors from the film.

thousands of people go to Sault Ste. Marie
for the International 500, the largest and

OBVIOUS CHILD
U.S. Comedy. 83 min.
27-year old Donna Stern has little to
complain about. A Brooklyn comedian,
she is the sweetheart of the crowd
thanks to her brand of lewd comedy and
stunning wit. Her almost perfect world
goes topsy-turvy when her two-timing
boyfriend dumps her. She hits rock
bottom and tries to find solace in the
company of her divorced parents and
indulgent best friend. A drunken rebound
with business-school grad Max, who is
not really her type, helps her get out of
her depression. But once again, Donnas
life is thrown into a whirl by her newly
discovered pregnancy. Not quite ready
for motherhood, Donna is tossed into
a variety of awkward situations, which
the film showcases in a humorous vein.

A STORY OF CHILDREN
AND FILM
U.K. Documentary. 106 min.
MARK COUSINS latest odyssey gathers
a mosaic of clips from 53 films to create a
unique portrait of childhood in cinema.
Using simple footage of his nephew and
niece, Cousins explores elements of
childhood personality and experience in
films from almost eighty years of cinema.
For example, he uses his nieces facial
expression as a starting point to study
that same look as it appears in films as
diverse as Spielbergs E.T. the Extra-
Terrestrial and Ozus An Inn in Tokyo. And
while Cousins reflections are endlessly
fascinating as he dances from class and
the changing social politics of the Soviet
Union to the volcanic temperaments of
children in Iranian film, what is perhaps
most impressive is that he manages to
remain eye-to-eye with the children he
features, bringing us into their world.

TO BE TAKEI
U.S. Documentary. 90 min.
GEORGE TAKEI doesnt shy away from
digging into his remarkable career and
personal life in JENNIFER KROOTs
delightful and incisive lm To Be Takei. As
a child forced into Japanese-American

A TOUCH OF SIN
China. Drama. 133 min.
More than any other contemporary
Chinese filmmaker, JIA ZHANG-KE (Still
Life, The World) has captured the cultural
shifts that predatory market forces have
brought to his country, charting the
sudden and dramatic friction between a
nation shifting from Maoist Communism
to robber-baron capitalism. Inspired by
four tales of true-life violence in various
parts of mainland China, Jia chronicles
the unfortunate trajectories of those
who sin and those who have been sinned
against in an anthology that examines
tradition, personal integrity, corruption,
and modernity. A former soldier incensed
by political graft, a woman betrayed by
the married man she is having an affair
with, a bandit who fetishizes the power
of his gun, and a young man desperate
for work all become victims of a society
that regards them as little more than a
cog in the capitalist wheel. Its a poetically
bracing examination of China that will
resonate with anyone whos watched with
concern the growing economic disparities
that are engulfing our own nation. JM

includes more than one plot twist, but its
first and foremost a testimony to a spirit
