JOINING THE LIBRARY
You will need to join the Library if you want to:
 
Use LARS: the Library Article Request Service
 
Join SCONUL Access (further registration required: see later section)
 
Borrow books
To join the Library:
please contact your Subject Librarian, Peter Bradley (contactdetails on back of this guide). Your Library borrower number and PIN will then beemailed to you. You will need these if you want to renew or reserve books via theLibrary catalogue. You will also need the borrower number to use the LARSService. If you visit the Library in person: you can collect a Library card from theMain Counter on Level 2 (the Ground Floor). You will need to show your Universitystudent registration number.
PASSWORD ACCESS TO E-JOURNALS AND DATABASES
 
To access e-journals and databases online,
both on and off-campus,
you do
 
notneed to join the library. Please access these online resources via the Librarywebpages so that you are recognised as an eligible user. You will normally need toenter only your BUCS username and password. If you do not have your BUCSpassword, please complete the following online request form (or contact me):

E-JOURNALS & PRINT JOURNALS
 
The Library subscribes to a large number of
e-journals and print journals.

The majority of the Library’s
print journals
for your subject are located at theshelfmark

of the Library. Pre-1985 journals are shelved onLevel 1. Within each PER subject section, the journals are arranged alphabeticallyby title. The detailed catalogue entry for the journal will show the shelf mark.
 
 
ONLINE DATABASES:
find out what journal articles & conference papers have been written on a specific topic 
 
Databases enable you to find references to articles and other documents from across a wide range of journals and other publications. Each indexes a different range of journals (though there is some overlapbetween them) so you need to search a variety of databases. You can search them by entering keywords,author names etc. Results will often feature abstracts which describe the basic content of a document. Lookout for

If you are looking for books on a particular subject but don't knowany authors or titles, try searching by entering keywords in the
anywhere
field.
Books from the Print Collection
: the Library catalogue record will provide you with a book’s shelf marklocation and information about its availability. Books on your subject are shelved at on Level 4 of the Library.To issue a book to your library card, use the
Self-Issue machines
on Level 2 of the Library, next to the MainCounter (you will need your library card and PIN number). You can do this whenever the library is open(normally twenty fours a day, every day of the year). Unfortunately, the Library is not able to post books butyou can
request copies of chapters to be posted
to you via the Library Article Request Scheme (see latersection). We charge fines for books that are returned late. If all copies of the book are on loan, you canreserve a copy on the Catalogue by selecting
place hold
. You will then be notified by email when the bookbecomes available for you to collect from the Main Counter on Level 2. You can
renew
books via the Librarycatalogue and
return
books by post.

LIBRARY ARTICLE REQUEST SERVICE (LARS)
Request photocopies of journal articles, or chapters from books,
held at the University of Bath. Thisservice is subject to UK copyright law, which means that we cannot supply more than one article from asingle journal issue or more than one chapter from a specific book. It also means that we must receive youroriginal signature on a completed request form, either by post or in-person - but not by email. There is anadministration charge of £2.00 for each request. Please make the cheque payable to the University of Bath.You can print the request form from the Library web pages and then return the completed form, along withyour payment to your Subject Librarian (Peter Bradley). Alternatively, on receipt of a cheque, we can sendyou the form. For more information and a form:

INTER-LIBRARY LOANS
If an article or book is unavailable in the Library or online:
we can request it for you via our Inter-LibraryLoans service. This is free of charge to you. However, each request costs the Library approximately £6.00so please only use this service when you are certain that you need an item. You make an Inter-Library Loanrequest by completing an online request form. 70% of articles and chapters are returned to the requestor’semail in-box as a PDF file within 2 days. OTHER LIBRARIES
SCONUL Access:
This scheme allows you to visit many higher education libraries in the UK and Republicof Ireland, either for reference or borrowing purposes. You are not entitled to use their IT facilities.
NHS Library Services Passport scheme:
If you are on a placement in Avon, Gloucestershire or Wiltshire,you can use this scheme to borrow materials from any NHS Library. If your placement is outside this region,you can visit any NHS Library for reference only. Alternatively, you can pay a charge which may entitle youto borrow materials.

British Library reading rooms:
