 This tutorial is intended to get you started with using the Gimp, orGnu Image Manipulation Program. The Gimp is a powerful, free,image editing program that is available for Unix, Windows, andMacintosh computers. The Gimp can be used for many of the samepurposes as Photoshop, such as preparing images for use on awebsite and retouching digital photographs. This tutorial uses theWindows version as an example, but the Unix and Macintoshversions are very similar. This tutorial refers to Gimp 2.0.
 
Download and Installation
In this section of the tutorial, we will download the Gimp and installit on a computer.
Downloading the Gimp and GTK+
We'll start by going to the Gimp's website atwww.gimp.org:
 
Scroll down and follow the link to"Gimp for Windows." While theGimp website only providesdownloads for the Unix and sourcecode versions of the program, itprovides links to websites whereyou can download the Windows andMacintosh versions.
