ADHD and Stress in ChildrenBrain Scan Study

As parents of ADHD kids know all too well, children with ADHD often havedifficulty handling stress, or stressful situations. Now, a team of researchers inAustralia may have found a biological reason why this is so.
24 ADHD Children Scanned
ADHD is the abbreviation for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD isone of the most common childhood behavior disorders. Of all children referredto mental health professionals about 35% are referred for ADHD, more than forany other condition. Those with ADHD often have problems in most areas of their life, including home, school, work, and in relationships. This team of Australian researchers studied brain scans of 24 ADHD children(with hyperactivity) and found that the right parietal lobes in children withADHD did not function as well as in children without ADHD. The right parietallobes are associated with the development of coping strategies.Prof Vance led the research team from Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital. He says these children will do anything to feel in control of their situation, andso they often have negative, oppositional ways of relating to others, such as,changing the rules of a game endlessly to make sure they win. While neurological differences in the brains of those with ADHD have beennoted in other studies, Vance noted that, "This discovery has the real potentialto improve treatment strategies for ADHD, to enable these children to bettermanage the demands of their family and school relationships. It (should not)be assumed that ADHD behavior is the fault of bad parenting or lack ordiscipline."
