Thanksgiving
This holiday derives from an important historical event.
To escape religious persecution a group of Puritans sailed from England on the ship Mayflower in
1620.
They landed in what is now Massachusetts and were helped by an Indian tribe, who gave them
seeds to grow maize.
In October 1621, after a terrible winter, the settlers celebrated the first Thanksgiving. With the
Indians they ate wild turkeys, meat pies, vegetables, pumpkin and maize bread.
Americans celebrate Thanksgiving on the fourth Thursday of November and it is a family feast.

I'm going to talk about three of them, see if you can identify which is which . The first one I'm going to talk
about is Tom. Tom is a young man, and he's wearing a dark jacket. He has short hair, it's difficult to tell if it's
dark or fair. Tom has obviously had some good news, or perhaps he's talking to his girlfriend or someone he
likes very much, because he's smiling, looks very pleased and happy. That's Tom. The next one I'm going to
talk about is Kate. Kate of course is a girl, or woman, not very old. She has hair which is not very short, but
also not very long, and Kate doesn't look happy at all. She looks very serious, perhaps someone is telling her
some bad news. She isn't talking, she has her mouth shut, and she's listening to someone talking to her. The
third one I'm going to talk about is Bob. Bob is an older man. He doesn't have much hair any more...and he's
wearing a suit. He looks worried, very worried ,he's talking about some problem which is rather difficult
for him to solve .

Giovanni Boccaccio
My name is Giovanni Boccaccio
I was born in 1313 in Italy. My father was a prominent merchant. I attended
school in Florence and was taken into the family business at the age of 10. I was
sent to Naples to study business and law in 1327. At the Angevin Court the story of
the last descendants of the Rufolos and della Marras was still alive . They had
been condemned to death by Charles II accused of extortion and treason, so I
decided to visit Ravello and the beautiful palaces and churches.
My growing interest in literature drifted me away from studying law and I
dedicated myself entirely to literature. I returned to Florence in 1348 on the death
of my father. I met Francesco Petrarca and became his close friend. Following
Dante's example we wrote our works in Latin, but then decided to switch to the
vernacular the language spoken by the people.
During the 14th century the Tuscan dialect began to predominate, because of the
central position of Tuscany in Italy, and because of the aggressive commerce of its
most important city, Florence. Moreover, of all the Italian dialects, Tuscan departs
least in morphology and phonology from classical Latin, and it therefore
harmonizes best with the Italian traditions of Latin culture. Finally, Florentine
culture produced the three literary artists who best summarized Italian thought and
feeling of the late Middle Ages and early Renaissance: Dante, Petrarca, and myself
My masterpiece the Decamerone was completed in 1358 It is a collection of a
hundred stories narrated by seven women and three men who reside in a country
villa for ten days after escaping from the plague in Florence.
As I had been very much impressed by the Rufolos, I included the story of Landolfo
Rufolo, in the Decamerone. I wrote in vulgar ( from Latin volgus, people )
I attempted to burn my works, letters, manuscripts and my library. Petrarch
convinced me not to burn my belongings and offered to purchase them. However,
after my death, my literary works were presented to the monastery of Santo Spirito,
in Florence. I passed away on December 21st, 1375.

Boccaccio's story (2
nd
day - 4
th
story)

Landolfo: Giovanni Boccaccio visited my hometown in the 14
th
century and in
his masterpiece, the Decameron, he tells my story. He calls me
Landolfo, but my real name is Lorenzo.I am Nicola and Sigilgaida
Rufolo's grandson.
The story starts with the description of my hometown, which is worth
listening to.

Scarce any part of Italy is reputed so delectable as the sea-coast between Reggio and
Gaeta; and in particular the coast which overlooks the sea by Salerno, and which the
dwellers there call the Coast of Amalfi, is studded with little towns, gardens and
fountains, and peopled by men as wealthy and enterprising in mercantile affairs as are
anywhere to be found. In one of these towns, to wit, Ravello, rich as its inhabitants are
to-day, there was formerly a merchant, who surpassed them all in wealth, Landolfo
Ruffolo by name, who not content with his wealth, but desiring to double it, came nigh to
losing it all and his own life to boot.
Reader 1 The new king of Naples, Charles I, to whom the Rufolos had
given money, made them governors and harbour masters of
Barletta, and they obtained the right to collect the customs dues and
accumulated great wealth. Charles II being envious of the new
enormous patrimony of the Rufolos, charged them with
extortion and treason and condemned them to death. Lorenzo
paid for his ransom and could go back to Ravello.
Landolfo In his story, Boccaccio, says that I turned a pirate because I
wanted to become rich again. In fact I intended to sail to the
near East with goods to sell.
Anna Rufolo Landolfo, I heard you want to leave Ravello and sail to the Near
East, where you'll sell what is left of our belongings.
Landolfo Yes, mother! You know how rich we were, and how poor we are
now. I'll come back rich and powerful. Don't cry! Say a prayer
for me, and I'll soon be back!
Anna My dear son, be careful! God be with you all the time! I'll spend
long hours on the terrace looking at the sea, hoping to see your
ship sailing back home.
Landolfo Take care, mother! Look after yourself, and have patience: I'll
be back!
Reader 2 Landolfo started his voyage to Cyprus, where he sold all his
goods. With the money he bought a light bark such as corsairs
use, took to scouring the seas as a pirate preying on all the ships he
met at the sea. A year had scarce gone by before he had taken so many
ships from the Turk that not only had he recovered his fortune, but
was well on the way to doubling it.

50
Landolfo I'm on my way back to Ravello. I am now rich and I'm looking
forward to living a peaceful life.

Reader 1 In Boccaccio's mind Landolfo's piracy represented the Rufolo's
extortion when collecting customs in Barletta.

Reader 2 Unfortunately Landolfo's bark met the Fleet of the Maritime
Republic of Genoa, and he was forced on board and robbed of
all his money.

Reader 1 In Boccaccio's mind Landolfo's capture represented Lorenzo's
arrest.

Reader 2 A tremendous sea storm destroyed the fleet and the crew
drowned.

Landolfo Good job I can swim, but the sea is very rough! And I need
something to hold on.
There, there! Over there! I can see there is something floating!
It's a piece of wood, no, it's a piece of furniture. It's a chest!
Thank God, I can grab it and hold on it!
How many hours have passed? I have no idea. I'm tired! I'm
dead tired!
Oh, there's a beach!
Woman Who's there? A shipwrecked person! Oh, my God. He's dead!
No, he's alive!
Come on, leave this piece of furniture! Leave it, why do you hold
it so tight!
Landolfo It's my safety. I could float all the time thanks to it! Where am I?
What place is this?
Woman You are on the island of Corfu.. Come to my home. You badly
need a wash, some dry clothes and some warm food.
Landolfo Thank you, thank you. You're so kind. I think I'll lie down and
have a good sleep.
Woman Keep your chest near you. Don't part with it.

Reader 2 While the woman is away Landolfo opens the chest and finds it
is full of precious stones.

Landolfo I think I've fully recovered and I want to go back to Ravello, my
mother is waiting for me. You can keep the chest, but please give
me a sack, where I can put my miserable clothes

51
Anna Oh, my dear son! Oh my dear son! How happy I am to see you
back! Welcome home!
Landolfo I am happier! We can now live in peace. All our money
problems do not exist anymore.
I have to send some money to a good woman in Corfu, who
saved my life, when I was shipwrecked on the beach. Then I
want to send some money to Trani, where I landed coming from
Corfu. Some people from Ravello live there and they gave me
new clothes and a horse to ride back!
Reader 2 The story has a happy ending. Lorenzo Rufolo really recaptured his
wealth, thanks to the jewels that his mother had saved and kept aside
during her life.

What language do they speak in Finland?

Finnish is a member of the Finnic group of the Uralic family of languages. The Finnic group also includes Estonian
and a few minority languages spoken around the Baltic Sea.Several theories exist as to the geographic origin of
Finnish and the other Uralic languages. The most widely held view is that they originated as a Proto-Uralic
languagesomewhere in the boreal forest belt around the Ural Mountainsregion and/or the bend of the middle
Volga. The strong case for Proto-Uralic is supported by common vocabulary with regularities in sound
correspondences, as well as by the fact that the Uralic languages have many similarities in structure and grammar.
Prior to the Middle Ages, Finnish was an oral language. Even after, the language of larger-scale businesswas
Middle Low German, the language of administration Swedish, and religious activities were held in Latin,
leaving few possibilities for Finnish-speakers to use their mother tongue in situations other than daily chores.

Finnish has 15 declensions! We are relieved that Italian, originating from Latin, has lost the only 6
declensions!
Finnish is spoken by 5 million people, who speak Swedish and English as well: therefore it's very
rare to find students learning Finnish.
To honour our Finnish partners, we'll try to learn some of the most common sentences.

Let's learn some Estonian
Estonian is the official language of Estonia, spoken natively by about 1.1 million people in
Estonia and tens of thousands in various migrant communities. The two different historical
Estonian languages (sometimes considered dialects), the North and South Estonian languages, are
based on the ancestors of modern Estonians' migration into the territory of Estonia in at least two
different waves, both groups speaking considerably different Finnic vernaculars Modern standard
Estonian has evolved on the basis of the dialects of Northern Estonia.
Estonian belongs to the Finnic branch of the Uralic languages, along with Finnish, Karelian, and
other nearby languages. The Uralic languages do not belong to the Indo-European languages.
Estonian is distantly related to Hungarian and to the Sami languages.
Estonian has been influenced by Swedish, German (initially Middle Low German, which was the
lingua franca of the Hanseatic League and spoken natively in the territories of what is today known
as Estonia by a sizeable community of Baltic Germans), later Estonian was also influenced by
standard German and Russian, though it is not related to them genetically.
