and therefore always falls on a Sunday. Fifty days after the Resurrection of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on the Jewish Feast of Pentecost, while the Disciples and the Apostles, as well as many other followers of Christ were gathered together to pray, God the Holy Spirit descended upon them in the form of “...
cloven tongues of Fire
...” with the sound of a Mighty Rushing Wind, and they all began to speak in different languages that were foreign to them. Many Hebrews had gathered from all over the known world in Jerusalem at that time to celebrate the Great Feast of Pentecost, and, having been drawn to where the Apostles and Disciples of Christ had gathered, they were astonished to hear the illiterate Fishermen and the other Disciples of Christ praising Almighty God in all the different languages of the world so that

This amazing Event was written in detail by St Luke in his Book of the  Acts of the Apostles, Chapter 2. The number 50 – as in the 50

, for we have lived Pentecost and we have received
"...the Seal of the Gift of the Holy Spirit..."
during the Holy Mystery of Baptism and Chrismation. For the Feast of Pentecost the Icon of the Holy Trinity, the three  Angelic Beings who appeared to Abraham, is placed in the centre of the Soleas for veneration, and is presented together with the traditional Pentecost Icon. The church is decorated with flowers and green leaves to show that

. Green Vestments and coverings are also used. In many Parishes the Feast is celebrated the evening before with the Holy Service of Great Vespers, followed by Matins and Divine Liturgy on Pentecost Sunday Morning. The Liturgy of St John Chrysostom has Festal Hymns that replace the standard verses of the Antiphons. The Hymns
O Heavenly King...”
 and “
We have seen the True Light
...”
are sung for the first time since Pascha, calling the Holy Spirit
to "...come and abide in us,"
 and proclaiming that
"...we have received the Heavenly Spirit."
 An extraordinary Service called
the Kneeling Vespers
” is observed on the evenig of Pentecost - to which are added three sets of long poetical Prayers, composed by St Basil the Great, during which everyone makes a full Prostration, touching their foreheads to the floor (Prostrations in Church having been forbidden from the day of Great and Holy Pascha up to this point). In many Parishes, however,

, the Feast of the Apostles, St Peter and St Paul. The length of this Fast depends on the date of Holy Pascha. Even though the start of the Liturgical Year begins on 1(or14) September, the Liturgical centre of the annual cycle of Orthodox  Worship is the Great Feast of Pascha, preceded by Great Lent and Pre-Lent. These are followed by the fifty days of Pascha, which ends with the Great Feast of Pentecost. Until the start of the next Great Lent,
