California is the jewel box of wine country in the United States. The state andwine country regions have a long, colorful and rich history. Over 200 years ago, winemaking made its debut in California. Although many people think it beganin the vineyards of Napa Valley, winemaking actually started in San JuanCapistrano. The Napa Valley was once home to thousands of Wappo Indians, eventhough there is almost no trace of an Indian population in the valley today. Theword Napa comes from the Wappo dialect and means plenty. Visitors to the winecountry of Napa Valley would agree that “Wappo” holds true today with “plenty”of wine for all discerning wine drinkers. In 1964 there were some 230 wineries inCalifornia and in 1998 there were about 840 in the state. Currently there are over2000 wineries in the state of California. The evolution of wine in California was considered by some, to be a winerevolution during the 1960s and 1970s. This revolution was largely initiated byprofessional men and women, such as investment bankers, professors, pilots, lawyers and doctors, all of whom had a passion for wine. Californias winemakersare among the most innovative and open to experimentation in the world.Today, California produces over 17 million gallons of wine each year. Thestate offers something for every wine drinker. Mendocino County has the largestpercentage of organic vineyards of any county in California. Over 20-percent of wine production here is organic.
