CharlesF.RipleywasaformerstudentandcolleagueofKarlTerzaghi(18831963),
consideredthefatherofSoilMechanics,nowknownasGeotechnicalEngineering.
AnativeofPrague,KarlTerzaghigraduatedfromtheTechnicalUniversityofGrazand
thenworkedasageologistinthefieldofcivilengineering.FollowingWorldWarIhe
carriedoutaprogramofresearchintothepropertiesofsoilsthatleadtothepublication
in1925ofhisfamousbook,Erdbaumechanikwhichpresentedthefirstcoordinated
pictureofsoilsasengineeringmaterials.Thisworkwasdonewhilehewasonthestaff
oftheImperialSchoolofEngineers,andthenofRobertCollege,bothinIstanbul,
Turkey.HewasappointedavisitingprofessorattheMassachusettsInstituteof
Technologyin1925butfouryearslaterreturnedtoaspeciallycreatedprofessorshipat
theTechnicalUniversityofVienna.In1938TerzaghireturnedtotheUnitedStates
acceptingapositionatHarvardUniversityfromwhichheretiredin1955.
TerzaghispioneerworkwaspubliclyrecognizedwhenthefirstInternational
ConferenceonSoilMechanicswasheldatHarvardUniversityin1936.Helivedtosee
soilmechanicswellestablishedthroughouttheworld,inthepracticeofcivil
engineeringandinthecurriculaofalmostallschoolsofcivilengineering.Morethan
justatheorist,Terzaghiwasalsoaconsultingengineerofinternationalreputationand
withaworldwidepractice.Terzaghiservedasconsultantonanumberofsignificant
projectsinBritishColumbiaincludingtheMissionDamthatwasrenamedtheTerzaghi
Daminhishonourin1965.
